With the emergence of Travis Varcoe now in full swing, I pose the question:

In 2-3 years, who do you see as the better player, Cyril Rioli or Travis Varcoe?

Now before all you Hawks supporters throw your arms in the air and start reaching for the tissues, I'd just like to state that I rate Rioli as a genuine gun. He's possesses freakish ability, and will no doubt develop into a seriously elite player.

But let me also state that I believe Varcoe will also improve to the point that he will be one of the comp's premier midfielders!

Just like Ablett did in 06-07, Trav has improved his fitness, improved his overall work ethic and is now relishing his increased time in the middle.

Obviously no one can tell what's gonna happen in the future, but either way we're all gonna be blessed to witness these 2 guns lighting the field up for years to come!

Ummm, no.

Varcoe will always be a defensive forward.

Rioli has already moved into the midfield and is winning his share of clearances. Is a very good inside/outside player and can play just about anywhere.

No comparison.

Do you actually know anything about football other than Hawthorn, or are you just a chump?

It's an interesting question. This season, Travis Varcoe has definitely delivered on the talent which many good judges knew he possessed. But in terms of comparing him with Rioli, it's worth remembering he plays as a flanker for a dominant team and this is also his fifth year in the system.

Rioli has already shown glimpses of ability in the stoppages and we must not forget this is only his third year in the system. It's not like the kid has had a clear run either. He severely tore his hamstring in 2009 and battled with groin soreness at the start of 2010.

It's easy to for people to lose sight of Rioli's youth, given that he stepped straight into AFL football and started pulling his opponents' pants down from the word go. Most of Cyril's contemporaries from the 2008 draft class are still graded as kids, whereas Cyril seems to get judged harshly against the AFL's absolute elite.

In his first two seasons, Rioli finished 6th and 2nd in Hawthorn's best and fairest voting. A great achievement! I'm not sure if Varcoe will do similar in Geelong's best and fairest in 2010, he has a lot of competition, but when he does figure amongst Geelong's very best handful players, then he'll have made it as a star of the competition.

If Varcoe maintains his current rich vain of form, then I'm sure people will start threads about him on BigFooty along the lines of "Travis Varcoe vs Lewis Jetta?"

We'll know he's really arrived when this happens...

Varcoe is slowly moving into the midfield and will be a gun midfielder next year or the year after.

But saying that Rioli probably has more potential. But both will be superstars.

At the moment both of them need to improve thier work rate so they stop getting 15 - 20 touches a game and move up to 25 - 30

lol a ******** journo writes and article in the paper today about varcoe and cats supporters think he is elite??

rioli painted the whole inside of his house with news paper articles about him

sorry mate but

Both excellent talents, but there are 2 fundamental differences between them.
1: Rioli is a poor kick. Varcoe isn't.
2: Rioli is hampered by too much self-belief in his own ability. Varcoe is hampered by a lack of belief in his own ability.

It will boil down to whether Varcoe continues to grow his confidence to match his ability, or whether Rioli grows his ability to match his confidence.

Hmmm. So hard. But for West Coast I'd take Cyril, simply because he has shown, that good team or not he can perform. Does the hard, less flashy things as well as the icing on the cake stuff.

Not sure if Trav could perform as well in a lesser team, because he hasn't had to yet.

Both amazing though.

Yeah you sure summed it up here.

Cyril was rated by Champion Data as the best kick of the 2009 season.

Varcoe . . . yup.

what makes you say this?? seems pretty bloody confident out there imo.

Varcoe is playing in a dominate team. SO of course he is going to show potential. He is not getting much notice so he can often do what ever he wants. The next 3 - 4 years time when a big chunk of your players leave and he starts to get noticed will show where he is really at.

As stated before though comparing him to Rioli is pretty silly. Rioli is 2 years younger and at present has a lot more runs on the board then Varcoe. I think you will sturggle to find many people outside of Geelong who would take seriously take Varcoe of the two.

So you start a discussion asking for opinions and call the first respondant a chump...

I havent seen enough of Varco this year to comment comprehensively, but it sounds like he has improved a lot.

From what I've read, he doesn't get hassled by the opposition nearly as much as Cyril does. It would be interesting to see how he goes next year if Ablett leaves or he steps up a peg or two in the tagging pecking order at Geelong.

Cyril does have a tendancy to fluff his kicks sometimes, but his ability to win the ball far outweighs that.

So Rioli is overrated? That's how I read your comments.

Rioli is clearly better then Varcoe only the most one eyed Geelong supporter would argue that.

Although Varcoe has improved out of site and he may not be Elite yet but he is not far from it.

Love Varcoes improvement this year and although A lot of Hawthorn players rate Rioli on potential and not performance to date, Cyril just oozes class and once he gets his consistancy will be one of if not the best players in the league.

What a suprise there's a bunch of Hawks screaming like they've never heard anything so absurd! Idiots.

No one is claiming that Varcoe is better than Rioli right now. Obviously Cyril is proven more at THIS POINT in time. The basis of this thread is the future! To predict which player will become the better player.

But I expect all Hawthorn supporters to still be crying regardless. How dare anyone talk about their sacred team of champions.

As someone said before, Varcoe has had more time to prove himself, and I personally dont think he has quite lived up to his expectations.

He has had a clean run of injuries and before this year he was about the 16th - 17th player picked for Geelong, and in that time he wasn't regarded as a game breaker of any sort. It has taken until this year for him to show that he can push Mike Sheehan's Top 50 at some point in his career.

Cyril on the other hand has been a "poster boy" for Hawthorn and is certaintly someone who attracts fans. Also some of the things he does on the field are nothing short of extroadinary and once he gets over his injuries and is fully developed I think he will be twice the player Varcoe is.

There's always Bay 13, mate

But if you wanted a serious discussion about Travis Varcoe, you could've left Cyril Rioli out of it. The only reason you'd bring his name into it is to get a bite from Hawk fans.

Mission accomplished

But then you get all shrill and started screaming about the Hawk cry-babies when all people have done is disagree with you, or point out a few pertinent facts.

Get a grip of yourself, but don't be a w***er...

Statistically it's actually not a bad comparison. Pretty even across most categories. Interesting to note that Varcoe averages slightly more inside 50s despite playing less of a midfield role, though neither of them send it in there that often. Rioli ahead on tackles but less damaging on the scoreboard while Varcoe gets less of the ball.

Rioli at this stage is ahead overall but, on paper at least, this particular season is a pretty even split. Without doubt two of the quickest, cleanest, most dynamic players around when they are on.
