Luke hodge vs gary ablett

Not only does Hodge display courage and outstanding leadership. But he also lifts those around him, is fiercely loyal and puts team honours above individual honours.

Gary Ablett is the opposite to everything said above. When we are judging these two at the end of their careers, Hodge will be a legend of the game, whilst Ablett will be seen as a selfish, money hungry mercenary. Hodge by 10 country miles :)

Shame on you Gary

well, at least you're not arguing the "hodge is better than ablett" line anymore

you're getting there :thumbsu:

No Hodge is better than Ablett as well. And so is Judd imo.

If Ablett was playing at Hawthorn or Carlton and not surrounded by Selwood, Bartel, Chapman etc, he wouldn't be able to do the jobs Judd and Hodge do for their sides

Hodge wouldn't have the stamina to play Ablett's 1-2 overlap role either Hyper.

Judd might not have the speed anymore to do it, and regardless his footskills aren't up to it in a side with Gibbs, Scotland, Russell and Murphy in the mix.

Hodge is probably the only one that could play (and has allready) CHB successfully. (H..JA)
They can all play the inside mid role, with little to seperate them. (HJA)
Ablett has them covered comfortably on the outside role (A...J..H)
Pretty even up forward (AJH)

If Hodge and Judd didn't have their injury woes, then potentially their endurance and speed (respectively) would be such that Ablett's advantages would be reduced, but at the moment I don't think there is that much between them at all, only bias (and expert opinion) putting Hodge first.

ablett has hodge covered comfortably as an inside mid

Ah, the 1-2 line, good one.Expert opinion has Ablett as the MVP for 3 years straight, and reigning Brownlow medallist.

The MVP has become a midfielder's award. This particularly evident when Riewoldt didn't even finish 2nd in the MVP in 2009.

Hodge was the finals MVP in 2008, and if you had to go with the true meaning of the term MVP, he was the overall MVP also.

Hodge had had a good 8 weeks.
To be honest whenever Hodge has gone into the midfield he has starred. It's only now that he's getting a clear run at it.

I think you undersold Hodge's forward abilities, he's better than Judd going forward imo.
This I agree with. Clearly a mistake by Simon there.

...and here I was trying to be kind. Ok Hodge is the best defender, best forward and best inside midfielder of the 3, but his lack of run-all-day and getting freebie handball receives stops him being the best outside (despite the best footskills)......

....better?

(LLD, it wasn't a dig at GAj, just the biggest difference between him and the other two is his ability to create space and overlap run through his work ethic/endurance/speed combo).

I said Hodge was a better forward than Judd.

Hodge clearly offers more for the hawks then ablett does for the cats as if ablett goes to the GC the cats would still be the best team going as they have so many quality midfielders. While if hodge left the hawks he would be unreplaceable. But as far who is the better player abletts best is still better then anyone elses, but the gap is closing and maybe in another 2 year hodge will have his measure.

hodge is the worst inside mid of the 3 by far

just because he's big and angry doesn't make him more effective than judd/ablett

those two are dominant clearance players and prolific ballwinners

hodge is more versatile than the other two, but he is well behind as a pure mid

so hodge is better because hawthorn have no depth?

So we are agree now that you have made your point (not) - so when are you going to say the Ablett is a better player?

It's hard to say since Ablett doesn't normally get a tag, and Hodge has only been playing midfield full time this year.

Give him a few years in the middle and then we can compare I guess.

Ablett cops a hard tag and beats it most times, if he doesn't then he keeps trying his guts out for the team. Alternatively opposition clubs just don't tag him because it's largely ineffective.

Hodge cops a hard tag and gives you nothing, he'll go MIA.
