Mentoring young players

Im DMac's biggest on field critic however off field he is professional in the way he prepares and trains

If he is used as break glass only and can help mentor such a young group on AFL standards in terms of preparation and training then Im not going to die in the ditch on retaining him for next year

Give him a coaching/mentoring/player role in the SANFL side ala Matty Wright in 2019... then you free up his list spot in the AFL side..

It was an improvement, but we did tend to go back to the older guys when we got a sniff of a win. We really had to get a few more games into those young tall defenders, particularly given we were pushing Harto out.
I think the only one we missed a trick with was Worrell, I agree he should’ve played a couple of games. However, McAsey was given plenty of opportunities and so was Butts in the 2nd half of the season. Another pre season to put weight on and now with Hartigan gone, they will get plenty of chances next year.

As I’ve also stated many times, I don’t think Mackay will play ahead of Hamill, McPherson, Sholl or Milera and may only play if we get an injury to any of those or a more senior player like Smith. I saw enough with how Nicks selected his squad early in the season to know that Mackay isn’t considered best 22 anymore. If he’s getting a game, something isn’t going right.

Did the club not blood enough new players this year (most of whom played 5 games or more) to think that maybe the issues with selection are a thing of the past? Nicks and his coaching panel are a completely new setup and from what a few posters have said on here, players young and old love the direction Nicks is taking them.

They love coming last?

Devastated for Gallucci that once again we've chosen a mediocre 32-year old over a young talent who was never really given a proper chance
The playing group love McKay....he sets excellent professional (not talent) standard, didn't you see him gut running in 35 degree heat when channel 9 was "secretly" filming him on whether he would get a contract extension.

Gold star for endeavour. Good boy David.

Amazing. Just amazing. This club is beyond incredible. Far out.
I'm not even mad anymore. It's actually quite impressive. This level of stupidity and incompetence doesn't just happen. It requires a real level of commitment.
Bravo boys. Bravo.

Rightly or wrongly, I see admin/board influence here. And who in the footy dept has the clout to tell them to 'GAGF, it's a footy call, stay out of it'. Not a one.

None of these decisions are surprising. I think the Gallucci one is a poor decision though. Given almost everyone out of the side at the start of 2020 eventually made their way into the side and did much better than almost every fringe player favoured by the club at the start of the season, there's no reason to suggest the same wouldn't have happened with Gallucci without his injury

Mackay has had 5 solid seasons in a row in his current role, (would be six if you exclude the Camporeale half of 2015.) IDK why extending his contract is controversial at this point.

No surprises with the delistings. I am surprised to see Mackay stay on but perhaps it was very much a case of staggering your senior player list culls. Next season we need to pump games into youngsters though. McPherson, Hamill, Scholl, Shoenberg, McHendry etc all need to have access to games on top of whoever our top draftees are and Hately. I'd be mega disappointed if we have senior players clogging best 22 spots. And young guys stuck at sanfl level.

fu**in hell, you really have drunk the mookay “koolaid” milk havent ya...

If the club wanted to keep some experience on to help develop the younger lads in the SANFL and only play AFL in a break glass last option then they shouldve kept Crocker, Wilson or Poholke instead..

Poholke and Wilson, in particular, absolutey dominated in the SANFL in 2019. With help from Andy Otten, those two led our sanfl team in 2019.

The last thing I want our youth to be looking up to and getting their ideas from is mookay... the bloke is hot garbage.

sh*t... I Would rather they had held Bryce Gibbs to the last year of his contract and made him the SANFL captain than give it to Mookay.

The club has publicly stated the importance of keeping some experienced players on the list going into next year.

Tex, Sloane, Talia, Smith, Laird, Lynch, Mrouch, Kelly, Brown not enough experience for you? We need a 32yo fringe player that the best case being put forward from his fans is that he won't play any AFL. Laughable.

Try because it's almost impossible for him to still be around when we're in serious contention again, and even if he was he's most certainly no Shaun Burgoyne.
