Mentoring young players

Im DMac's biggest on field critic however off field he is professional in the way he prepares and trains

If he is used as break glass only and can help mentor such a young group on AFL standards in terms of preparation and training then Im not going to die in the ditch on retaining him for next year

What would he mentor them in?

- Playing a good game 11 years ago
- How to avoid any personal accolades
- The joys of not performing in successive finals series.

The absolute worst thing about Mackay Getting a 1-year contract,
It having to read all the pitiful hate just to get to a good post,
Love him or hate him stiff sh*t, mean little in the big picture,
Does actually, he's taking a spot of a younger faster better tackling recruit we could have had. Sums up the AFC.

Read 5 posts in the first 9/10 pages - wonder how long it took for the

"you know I was really angry at the club about Mackay, but having thought about it I can see what the club is trying to achieve " posts to show up

Yep, they're going for that 22 years no flag, reigning wooden spooners vibe. Seeing how low we can go, taking the club to new places! Really they are trailblazers in the AFL.

Try because it's almost impossible for him to still be around when we're in serious contention again, and even if he was he's most certainly no Shaun Burgoyne.
Well obviously. If that were the case he would be traded to St. Kilda for 2 magic beans (negotiated down from 3)

delists gallucci and murphy is on the senior list. im so over this club making ret@rded decisions.

murphy is one of the worst afl players Ive ever seen.

That is because murphy "tries hard". See that is what matters! Effort! It doesn't matter if you're talented, if you don't meet the mystery effort metrics set by the club then you're gone!

It is THE true path to success, sure it hasn't worked yet, but eventually maybe in 100 years we can luck into a premiership. GO CROWS!

You cannot, however, you can certainly get rid of all of the old mediocre guys in a rebuild.

David Mackay is not the difference between us getting through this period unscathed or us failing this rebuild because Mackay is not good enough of a footballer to make that difference. After all, that's why you keep the older guys, to make sure you're not getting belted week in week out.

If you want to talk about people we should be keeping who are on the older side/unlikely to be around when we're competing, you're talking about your Talia, Laird, Matt Crouch, now Lynch (seeing how finished Tex is as a footballer) etc, players with obvious value on field. Mackay is just us pissing away a list spot because we're a very stupid club, and if there is anything that has been constantly reinforced in the past few years, it's we're a very stupid club.

Even if you want to argue Mackay is a cultural selection falls down when our culture has been rather shithouse for the past decade. Look at the people leaving and how arrogant we got in 2016-2017 despite having done nothing at that point before imploding. Our culture isn't one worth saving.

I agree.

In 2020, only having two players ranked as Elite (MRouch and Laird) hurts us badly.

When high performing clubs like the Weagles and GWS top the list with 9 Elites and the 2020 Premiers and runners ups have 7 Elites the Crows are far behind the eight ball in matching on-field talent. Hell even the Alberton scum have 5 Elites in their side.

In 2017, we had 7 Elites (2 are no longer with us) with 5 rated above average (3 no longer with us).

Until we either build some Elite talent or get it in to the club somehow we will struggle big time to be competitive like we were in 2017.

Welcome to the Rebuild folks.

Unpopular opinion but wanted to post. As much as I understand why people don't agree with it, I see why the decision was made. List sizes have shrunk and we'll have a very young side next year as it is. DMac is as durable/reliable as they come, whereas the Gooch probably won't be able to even play a game until may next year, so can't carry that.

For me the question is how they use him. Do they finally only use him when needed or do they still play him above development.

For $400k a year and a spot on an AFL list, I wouldn't give 2 shits about what people said about me on social media.....
Ah that classic argument! I thought people had a better understanding of mental health these days and the impacts of social media for people with a high profile. Some can block it out, some can’t, doesn’t make them any less of a person for feeling upset at some of the vile that gets sprouted by randoms on social media about you because of your chosen career.

I don’t think anything in this thread in crossing the mark, but it certainly does on other social media platforms.

Hah, I wonder if he'll reach 250 games? I think Crocker should have been given another chance.

As if it is going to affect our outcome in 2021. Best of luck Dmac in 2021.

250? The cheersquad have already started on his 300 game banner.

Plenty of experienced players without Mackay.

The problem is they think they need him form round 1.

it will be like any other past few years he won’t be seen all pre-season or round 1 then all of a sudden Hamill will get another concussion, Milera’s foot will fall off and McPherson’s hamstring will get lost by Australia Post and blammo! The enforcer’s back
