A career where he averages 9 kicks and 8 handballs a season isnt a great career- those are 1-2-3 year player numbers . His best year by average was 2018 - 10 years after he started when he managed an amazing 10.6 kicks and 6 handballs to - oh wait - again average 17 disposals.

He is flat out average and the only thing you can say is he is consistent - but as noted if thats a measure of what you want to teach your incoming group then thats a fail for me

Someone mentioned Giansiracusa - he also averaged under 18 disposals a year but he had 5 seasons of 20+ a game

David Mackay is not a requirement
17 disposals a game is still double what Jones averaged this year.
god, can’t believe I’m defending Mackay.😂

If as some people are suggesting we're keen on Caleb Poulter he could come in and play the outside role Mackay plays from round 1 2021.....and has serious weapons outside of his speed, can someone tell me apart from outside speed what does David actually offer?
I admit I don't see a great deal of value in David's contributions over the years but I will bow to those that know more about footy than I do. Every coach since Neil Craig has seen something in him and consistently placed him in our best 22. That's Craig, Bickley, Sanderson, Walsh, Camporeale, Pyke and Nicks. Rarely has he been dropped or kept out of the side because of form or to make way for a youngster who looked to have more potential. That's in a career of over 200 games.

But to answer your question, even I can see that besides his outside speed he has excellent ball skills, enormous courage and works hard. I surmise that the coaches think he plays his roll in the team well and have heard he is professional in his preparation and thus a good roll model.

What I find amusing is posters needs to invent faults and inadequacies in players that are not popular on this board.

I remember watching draft night and screaming at the TV when we selected Gallucci, really wanted Will Hayward or Brandan Parfitt (both of which now look like 200+ game players) at the time. Look at the names that went in the next 20 picks.. Still burns. Really poor selection.

This is a shocker of a pick.

To those saying he will play SANFL... yeah right heard that before.

Yep... the same people said that at the end of 2018..

and David spend the entire preseason on the injury list... then David didnt even play the pre-season games..

and we all started to believe these same people... maybe it was true...

then came team selection for round one..

and there was David “Lazarus” Mackay’s name in the 22... not on the emergency list... the ****in 22!..

missed the entire preseason and both JLT games... then strolls into the changerooms and laces up for round one... right on past a whole heap of our young lads that had put in over the preseason and showed some great promise in the two JLT games..

Gooch was utterly shafted by the club.

Dropped after getting concussed in the Showdown and then delisted after being out for the season.

But oh good Mackay gets another run FMD.
Did he get even a single game in his best position?

Some really good players in that 20 to 29 bracket . Hamish better not pick up more short people this year.

We've lost a good player to another club from every draft between 2005 and 2015

Vince
Tippett
Dangerfield
Davis
Gunston
Lyons
Brad Crouch
Atkins*
Cameron
Lever
Greenwood

(*not that good)

When you look at it like that, it's no wonder we haven't seen success in that period

The absolute worst thing about Mackay Getting a 1-year contract,
It having to read all the pitiful hate just to get to a good post,
Love him or hate him stiff sh*t, mean little in the big picture,

What is the big picture if not continuation of the small picture of focussing 100% on the 4 points on offer next weekend. We don't do big picture.

Being an All Australian immediately removes you from any conversation of worst 200 game player. He has an industry-recognized accolade

Leon Davis - 2x All Australian
Michael Doughty - at least 4 top 10 finishes and two top 5 at the Adelaide B&F (versus 1 for Mackay)
Daniel Giansiracusa - club leading goal kicker, twice
Shaun McManus - 42 Brownlow votes vs 1
Leigh Brown - more Brownlow votes as a key position player
Ryan Houlihan - at least 3 top 10 finishes at the B&F
Adam McPhee - All Australian
Heath Scotland - won a B&F
Jason Blake - at least 3 top 10 finishes at the B&F
Brent Reilly - at least 2 B&F top 10 finishes

Pretty sure the worst 200 game player in AFL history is Anthony Rocca
