Gold Coast to be the first winless team in a VFL/AFL season since 1964. Not because they'll any worse than this year but it's becoming increasingly difficult to find a fellow inhabitant of the AFL underclass within their reach.
I've been thinking about fixturing tweaks the AFL can do to make it a bit easier on them but I just can't see a nailed-on possible win in the first month to give them. Fremantle at Metricon? Demons at Metricon?
After that their best hope is getting fixtured teams on back-to-back interstate trips or consecutive six-day breaks. Maybe a tanking team or the arse falling out unexpectedly (maybe Essendon in handover mode?).
The closest we've come to a winless season in recent times was GWS who were winless until Round 19 of 2013. Fremantle 2001 who made it to Round 18 before knocking off Hawthorn (who started the round in third and were up by 40 points). Gold Coast made it to Round 16 in 2012. Fitzroy won their only game of 1996 in Round 8.
If Gold Coast can't win in the first month then they'll give a full winless season a shake. Given the media machine will probably be obligated to sell the positives about their offseason it may even catch a few people by surprise that they're still crap.
