I don’t blame Amorim, or Ten Hag.

Any new United manager is on a hiding to nothing walking in the door because the fundamental problem they need to fix is 12+ years of weak on and off-field leadership and culture, and to do that they need to piss off or remove some extraordinarily overpaid and influential senior players and off-field staff which they will inevitably revolt against and is inevitably going to affect form in the short term, which inevitably results in the manager getting turfed and the process starts all over again.

From 2005 to 2013, United cleared 80 points every single season, not finishing lower than 2nd once during that period.

In hindsight and in contrast to other clubs, the post-Ferguson transition was managed appallingly. Any business needs to manage turnover but when you have too much experience or talent walking out the door too quickly you’re f***ed. United have never recovered from this.

Since 2013 they’ve cleared the 80 point barrier just once (2017-18), and even then they finished 19 points short of title winners City. The fact that this achievement took Mourinho, one of the strongest leaders the game has ever seen, before even he lost control is testament to how difficult it’s going to be to turn this ship around.

Long may it continue :beercheers::)

Amorim’s issue is going to be similar to Ange. Intent on playing his style in spite of not having the players to execute it. Some view the job of a competent manager is to get the best you can out of the players you have, rather than shoehorn them into roles they are not capable of and constantly being cost points because of it.

United have good enough players to be higher on the table than they are, but they will struggle to get points with the current approach. Will fans be patient enough to languish in mid-table until he gets the two or three summer transfer windows to get players required for his “vision”?

No when SAF retired, he picked Moyes.

Ah, that’s pretty old now. Moyes lasted 7-8 months and then he was sacked. We’ve sucked ever since SAF retired.

Our supporters have been patient for many years, I think the more reasonable ones will continue being patient knowing that Amorim doesn’t have the squad he needs to succeed. He isn’t in danger of getting sacked during his first season no matter how bad it gets. If after two or three transfer windows results on the pitch don’t change, then yes, more people will start to lose what’s another word for patience?.

Let's not pretend Liverpool fared any better after their 70's/80's successful era, they fell into a hole and took them 30yrs to win a title.

Anyway, the facts are United weren't ready for SAF's departure, and Gill's for that matter, 2 huge cogs of the club suddenly departing. Yes, he won the title in his final season in charge, but go back and look at that side haha, we won it off the back of a superb season from RVP and Carrick bossing the midfield, but you had the likes of Cleverely, Anderson, Young, Kagawa, Evans, Welbeck etc playing regular football, while a good chunk of our stars were getting on with age. Evra's even been on record saying that SAF promised to him he was staying for a further 10 years and his plan was to bring Ronaldo & Bale to the club. SAF retiring also hugely impacted RVP, who has said himself he joined United because of him, and after 1 season, 1 title, he retires and RVP never really recovered after that.

Then on top of all that you bring in Moyes, who the whole squad would've been like "wtf". Best case scenario is we should've got Mourinho in straight after SAF, at least he would've instantly had the respect of the dressing room.

I guess my question is, are you OK with him not adapting in the meantime trying to win more games and at least compete for Europe?

I know from my own experience I lost patience with Arsene not changing his game plan for years despite the decline in quality in the squad. Consistently shipping 5 and 6 goals against Liverpool, Chelsea and United got pretty damn annoying when we no longer had Pires, Henry and Viera but continue to set up as if we did.

I am happy with Amorim trying to implement his own system with a group of players where not all of them will be sold off.

I think it comes down to the club and what they actually want to be. Klopp, Arteta and even Pep when he got to City didn’t try and adapt their philosophy to maximise short term results. Everything was aimed at getting to the end goal of competing for titles as quickly as possible. There were some rough times and external pressure but the club stood by them and have been the better for it.

United needed to decide before hiring Amorim if they are up for that same process or if they aren’t willing to accept more short term pain.

I get why it isn’t easy for clubs to do though. Fans can be the first to lose patience, and there’s no guarantee it even works. Amorim can be given 2 years, be well backed and it turns out they’ve backed the wrong guy and need to start again.

The players are better than their current form/position but Amorim has only improved the defence a small amount. The rest he has turned to shite. I don't care if he's been picked under a different formation, he's there to get results and it's not like over the summer he'll be able to bring in 11 new players. No manager is able to do that. What a manager should be able to do is get better results and if this continues for another few weeks it's time to turf him.

At least Liverpool had a 6 year European ban as an excuse. What’s United’s excuse?
