Mark Neeld to coach.... thoughts??

Im glad to hear that Neeld is a no nonsense guy & is able to make hard calls & give a bake. I know it is stereotyping but he doesn't look or appear to be a real hard c!&t though which is exactly what we need. He needs to come in with his own assistant coaches & rule the roost from the very start & tell players how it is.

Time will tell if this is the right appointment but if we can't have Malthouse then his right hand man isn't too bad I guess. Hopefully a senior assistant coach can come in to give him a hand too

I agree with your sentiments re: another coach coming in with a developing team but we are in a much different position to the one Bailey inherited. Bailey did the hard work in terms of turning the list over but he had a lot of dead wood and players who weren't required. That's all done now.

What Neeld gets is an extremely young list that he can mould and shape how he sees fit. The older players still have plenty to give (bar Green) and he shouldn't have to un-train too many bad habits. I think it's a great opportunity for him.

I can't be bothered checking but I'm fairly certain that Thompson, Clarkson, Worsfold, Williams, Roos were all untried coaches that grew with their list.

100% behind the Neeld appointment. Collingwood created the blueprint for the way the game is played today and will be played for the foreseeable future. Neeld was part of that process. He comes from the right stuff.

Hopefully we explore the possibility of adding someone like Craig in a Thompson type role.

Here, here. And if the club make this appointment brothers, then we must back this man to the hilt because he could the one to lead us to the promise land.

Clearly, he is the stand-out assistant coach at AFL level. If Garry Lyon thinks he is the man to lead the club, then who the **** are any of us to argue. Go Dees!!!!!

I wish Mark Neeld all the best and obviously hope he does a great job. But don’t foget he will be a developing coach with a developing team – a combination that didn’t work last time. How can anyone judge who will be the best coach out of the assistants ..Neeld, Burns, Cameron etc. ? Generally none of them have coached an AFL Team so we don’t know how they will perform. Are they good under pressure? What kind of moves do they make during a game? How do they setup or respond when they are 6 goals down? Therefore, we can’t say that we snapped up the best coach – all we can say is that based on what we know about him as an asisistant AFL coach we hope he will be a good senior AFL coach.

While we can't make judgement on the other guys & i'm not going to totally judge Needl on this.

BUT in response to your above, Needl has experience as a senior coach, yes it's not at AFL level but he has been the main man & had the success of 4 consecutive flags, having to coach through difficult situations with that grand final story, he coached Western Jets for a few years so has experience dealing with very young players. He's now coached both the back line & midfield at a successful AFL club, so he's not a one dimensional coach.

Based on those experiences for Needl against Burns & Cameron & co who've all gone from being players to assistant coaches, then it's not so much about the PowerPoint & if they similarly present well then I'd go for the more varied experienced guy.

I actually wasn't that keen on Needl, but doing a bit more research into his background i think that he was the best option of the untried guys, time will tell but if that's the way we decided to go I'm happy with the decision.

Has anyone thought about the possibility of Neeld coaching for ONE year, before allowing Mick to come in as coach in 2013? Maybe Neeld will stay on as an assistant in 2013, allowing Mick to coach? (I'm wishfully thinking through the fear of the unknown. This appointment scares me. :S)

Been mentioned a few times in the other thread.

He's been wanting a senior job for a while, why would he take a job for a year with us & then step back instead of just say trying for Adelaide or saints jobs?

Wishful thinking of the highest order

Very unlikely mate. Neeld will feel as though he has earnt the right to coach his own club. And from what you hear, Adelaide were heavily into him also. So if he was to accept the MFC gig, it would be with a view to being a long time coach of the club.

Would the most amatuer move ever, clubs don't sign coaches for one year in the hope of getting another the following year.

It's just foolish.

**** the idea of Malthouse off, it won't happen and was never going to happen.

Besides what kind of person (an assistant coach with senior coaching aspirations nonetheless) signs with a club only to hand over the role next year to someone else? It's just idiotic.

I wonder if Mark will be presented at the Best and Fairest next week? It's been a long year for the Demon faithful. I'm sure the coaching sub-committee would want him to appear to give supporters something to hang their hat on for 2012. I suppose it will depend on what Collingwood decide to do with him with regards to the rest of their finals campaign.

Who was stressing about motivation? Did you read that post Jim Boy posted, it was from a Geelong supporter who saw Needl give the best 3/4 time motivational speech while coaching Ocean Grove in the grand final. Game almost lost, injuries & tired bodies, him inspired them to a win.

I know it's just a BF posters view, but it's not made up clap trap from a supporter after he's joined their club, this was written in 2006 when Geelong were considering him for a coaching role. I suggest everyone actually go read it, really impressive

Na mate sorry didn't read it all as it's Friday night and just trying to keep tabs on what's going on. So many posts about motivation and without the time to read every post with a magnifying glass i made a post commenting on numerous posts by fellow supporters asking for someone to inspire the players. My point was that it's there (motivation) for them now and they are now equipped to use that motivation and it should not have to be a coach to instill that in them rather pride in themselves and the jumper.

Some good research Chip...take your point he's probably the best of the assistants. For me though I'll go crazy if we get burnt again by a
DB Mark 2 - I think that is something most of us fear. Say Neeld gets 4 years, that's 8 years of pain and suffering. But who knows...he might end up being the best Melb coach in the last 45 years and the punt pays off...like eveyone else I hope he has an MFC premiership cup in his hand as soon as possible. I had Greg Parke's number on my back when I was about 8 yrs old, so you can understand I've been patiently waiting for something to happen for many years. Unfortunately, I was too young to see the 64 Flag.

He probably couldn't stand the thought of being an assistant to FIG JAM next year and would have taken a job at any other club.

Two great signings. Had initial worries about Neeld given the coaches we could've had but after reading stories about him he is far more capable than Bailey ever was. And Neil Craig... BRILLIANT SIGNING! Not because of his coaching credentials (they are good to begin with) but because the players will be running out games now. We know of Neil's record in terms of conditioning and fitness etc.

I reckon we could be a sneaky chance of top four. Sure, I'll be laughed at for this comment but look at where West Coast have got themselves from last year.

Top 8 certs i reckon...not sure top 4

With Craig he was a huge part of Australia's sucessfull Track Cycling era of the 90's before the crows so his depth of knowledge is second to none re fitness and conditioning

Gutted the Lions will miss out :(

Can't be necked starting a topic, but I remember Harry Kewell saying last night on TFS that the facilities at AAMI park were the best he had ever seen.
Thats a massive endorsement is it not? This coming from a guy who has played with Liverpool and other top soccer clubs that absolutely pour money into things like this don't they?
