OMG. Wilkie & Howard! I’m off to the Best 22 thread to eat my words.

So we have to drop two today to get to 22 then we have to drop another three to fit Ross, Gresham and Carlisle back in. Holy heck. Selection committee be like:

That's harsh and i have been 1 of Dunstans biggest critics over the years, he is a lock rnd 1

Harsh? His kicking is atrocious for an AFL player! Ratts has explicitly asked for better skills.
I like Dunstan as a person don't get me wrong, nothing personal. Hard ball gets and clearances ok. But he can't hit a target 20m away.
The only thing he is consistent with by foot is missing targets. Sorry people, truth hurts sometimes.

Wrapped with the way we are going into the season. Were marching in!!
Our midfield is looking tough and like they have good cohesion and that was even with Gresh and Ross today.
Dunstan and Steele seem to have become some sort of hard nut team - they worked really well against the Hawks too.
Loved Long off hbf. Adds such a spark, but i think he is very good defensively too and he took a couple of nice intercept marks as well.
King is just awesome to watch - could have had 4 today, but that will come soon. He will be unstoppable!
I like the way Ryder and Marshall combined and although they didnt hit the scoreboard, they did provide a marking target when resting forward, which I think we ended up kicking a couple from.
I liked Battle at hff, looked really good in that spot and his laser kicking is beautiful to see.
Lones did well with 4 goals.
Howard awesome, beautiful kicking too! Paton very solid. Coff looked pretty good when he came on. Wilkie is an absolute legend. His intercept marking and kicking is excellent.
Hill and Jones add a lot to our team.
Billings good game, but as others have mentioned, would like to see him more creative and use his footskills to there potential.
I reckon Geary isnt quite moving well- not canning his game, but he looked like he wasnt running freely.
Sinclair quiet and Kent did ok, but i dont think he had much of an impact. I dont actually think Butler had much of an impact either. Phillips not great, thought he contributed strongly to Collingwoods first 2 goals.

So for rd 1 we may lose for me out of Geary(if carrying injury) Sincs, Phillips, Kent, Butler, Coff & Paton.

In Gresh and Ross and..
Edit: In Carlilse too.

Amazing to see Robo back after so long and still playing very well. I think he will be very good for us this year considering how he is playing and thats pretty much the 3rd time he has played in 2 years - no 2nds game or anything
Butler is certain to play round one. Recruit for a start so would play anyway but secondly his first practice game gives him a game anyway and so it should. And I ain’t a fan. All 5 recruits are playing next week bar injury. No idea who goes out for the 3 certain ins. Love battle to play but don’t see a spot. Most likely 7 backs and 7 forwards and 8 mids

Well that effort is going to help generate more memberships. Granted Pendles and Taylor went down early but a far more competitive Saints lineup.
Will be a team to watch in 2020 and interested to see how quickly the new mix can gel together.
Magpies will only get better , but they will have to wait for Treloar to get back into the team and Stephenson to get some match fitness , I would also turn Moore into a CHF and with Scharenberg fit they can do it - however I feel we will be above the Magpies at the end of the year.

Five outs, three ins. Most likely:

IN: Carlisle, Gresham, Ross
OUT: Battle, Coffield, Paton, Phillips, Sinclair

Personally I'd leave Robbo out as I don't think he's in good enough form yet, and he makes us a bit top heavy at the back. And I'd consider dropping Kent, his pressure's good but he's terrible with the ball. That would let us keep Battle and Paton in. Which makes it:

7 Backs: Carlisle, Howard, Wilkie, Geary, Long, Clark, Paton
6 Forwards: King, Ryder, Membrey, Lonie, Butler, Battle
9 Mids: Marshall, Ross, Gresham, Hannebery, Dunstan, Steele, Jones, Hill, Billings

Interesting that team would still be older and more experienced than any side we picked last year, even without Robbo and Kent.

Lonie and Dunstan have played 2 excellent games in a ro. They have claims on being our most improved on limited form. Long on one looks even better. He would have just about doubled his highest possession count in that game and looked like a Zac Williams/JJ/Shaw type of run and carry defender. He did it all, broke lines, used his physicality to intimidate, won contested possession and used the ball well and creatively. I can see why the hype came now.

I thought Jones was disappointing myself. He's got a lot of gears to go up. He was better ta that at the Swans and I never rated him massively. I thought Hanner was poor too, he goes up to his last years form and we have another 30 possession mid who can play inside and outside. Coffield looks behind a few for a backline spot still as well.

Hill grew into that game, he was hardly getting a touch in the first quarter. Still finished with 28 possessions or something. Geary was serviceable but can step up. Sinclair and Kent didn't really give themselves a guaranteed spot playing in the role that killed a few recent Saints contracts. Roberton too can step it up, he was an AA quality defender at his best. Lots of room to grow still from that game which is the biggest positive.

Wikie is the new Dempster.

I have made that comparison before, he is so similar a bit of bicep work and they would be a similar size and build even. They have that quiet determination and reliability.

A real chicken or the egg scenario there .
Yeah - that's my point. People very quickly jump to a positive (Play Battle instead of Ryder because Battle looked better in the forward line) but don't consider the negative (do our mids do as well with a different ruck set up).

We won - and part of the reason was that Grundy was negated (or even beaten) for the whole of the game.

Battle has to play

Sincs phillips and kent nope

And im not confident on hanners at all
Seriously all jokes aside from the last fortnight i was expecting to see him not dominate but be quite involved and was a little disappointed tbh
Obviously taking it slow but apparently its been his best preseason in years, although i dunno how with a foot injury

Selection night is going to see some massive melts lol

Edit then u look at the stats and see hanners actually did ok
18
9 contested
A goal
Some clearances
All from 62% game time

Tbh i dont notice alot of the stuff he does

I reckon some of the Hanners talk has been a little harsh. For his first game I thought he was pretty good. Only played 60% of the game so 18 touches is plenty. Used it well. Five clearances and nine CPs. Kicked a goal.

He didn’t get into space much, but he was playing mainly an inside role.

Howard with a match-high 10 intercepts and also had 16 disposals, @100%!

Looks like being a big overall upgrade on Brown.

Taller, much faster and much better kick.

Good luck marking a high ball with him and Carlisle in the area!

Incredible his disposal compared to last week. Like chalk and cheese. Seeing as i don't watch Port games i am leaning towards last week being an abberation. If that's the case we have a geniune quality KPD without weakness.

I still see a spot for Brown in the team when we are to play teams like Richmond or West Coast however if Howard keeps this up Browns number is up.

Just looks like he's slower and somehow shorter than I remember him from his peak Sydney days. He's the sort of guy who needs 30 touches to have serious impact, fingers crossed he gets back to that point.

Agreed that he looks slower. Certainly doesn’t look like the great runner he was at his peak. Don’t agree that he needs 30 to have an impact though. If he plays more inside than he did at his peak, I think he can be effective with 25. From what we saw of him last year and yesterday though, I reckon he’s going to be smart enough to find plenty of footy still.

Agree on Battle, got to play him, there is far more upside in Battle than Kent or Phillips and I think he can play most of the roles they play.He is an important project for the future.

Don't get the love for Dunstan, continues to butcher the ball, continues to take our plays to the wrong places on the oval. BUT, Hannebury looked cooked, can barely get above a canter. I would not play him round 1 based on yesterdays game.

So I think it is Siclair, Phillips, Hannebury, Coffield and Kent out Round 1. The really interesting one is Carlisle. I thought our defensive group was superb yesterday. Howard completely won me over. Long and Wilkie looked sensational and Robbo is going to be back to best in short time - amazing first up game for someone who's been out for a year. Geary looked pretty ordinary but you have too start your Captain in round 1. I am not sure Carlisle comes in. He adds something, for sure but he also takes away some of the fast movement we were getting from deep in defence.

North have a couple of good talls so that maybe what swings it for Carlisle in the end but gee....anyone but Geary is going to be very unlucky to be dropped from that back 6 yesterday.

Yep. Gets the ball too much because his disposal is appalling and he takes us to the wrong parts of the ground....mostly wide to wing/HFF...because he is not agile or quick enough to turn back into play. Steele is the same type of player but he generally straightens us up forward of centre.

Look at the very first kick in the game yesterday. It is typical Dunstan. Instead of hand balling off to a free Phillips he swings his boot at it and tumbles the ball to a neutral boundary throw in on the wing. He then goes to ground under no pressure at the boundary throw in. He then scrubs a kick to King who makes it look good by taking a blinder, kicks a point and then Dunstan's man (De Goey) get off the leash and opens up the ground for the first Pies goal.

His next possession, an uncontested mark at the 10 minute mark, he wheels nicely into open space under no pressure, the whole ground ahead of him and kicks a very nice looking kick straight to 2 free Collingwood players near the boundary line on our half forward flank. I couldn't be bothered researching anymore.

So in first 11 minutes he has had 3 possessions, 2 were horrible, one was OK and his man De Goey was generally carving us up.

I think too many people here get seduced by his stats, and don't note his actual impact on the game.

Dunstan at the moment gets a game because there is no obvious replacement. I hope by the end of the year the wraps on Bytel are true because we will not be a contender with Dunstan as a key mid.

Phillips and Sinclair should be out. Billings gets more wing time. Sinclair needs a kick up the ass. We looked bloody good at times. Massive fan of Dougal. Did Coff play less game time? Paton imo will be top quality. Great decision maker. For the outs its Phillips Sinclair (I really want to drop Kent).

I actually thought Hill had more impact in the 1st game, but he did end up getting it a fair bit.

For me, I am amazed Robo isnt a lot more rusty being he has hardly played at any level for the last 2years.

Hope Long can keep this up consistently - will be an absolute weapon for us. I was dissapointed after the first game after all the hype about him, but he killed it yesterday.

I think Coff only came on in the last, so tough to judge but what he did, he did well.

Just going to be so hard to get into the 22 and you still have JWeb, Sav, Marsh who look like coming into the mix, Parker who I would love to see get amongst it and Ross and Gresh amd Carlilse.

Butler and Kent both played ok i thought but i didnt think they had much impact, Sinclair didnt really have any impact. Coff only came on the last, so not much impact. Paton would be very stiff to get dropped - was very good.

Battle looked probably our best at chf so I would be sticking with that.

Myb the afl can let us play with am extended bench?

Coff only played the last quarter.

It's not a secret i have been a major detractor of Long. Yesterday he turned it around and sent a benchmark for himself that he needs to stay at. I feel like he may have read some social media this week or Ratts had a good talk with him as it appeared to me from the outset he was playing with a rocket up his ass. Hands down the best game he has played for us. If he continues in the same vein then i don't see him as a weak link in the chain as yesterday he was doing everything right. I must concede on this effort and from the club reports he plays round one however if he starts going missing in games down the road and reverts to his "usual" form i hope the club can remove the rose colored glasses but i truly hope it doesn't come to that.
