Its an odd one, in 2018 we lost most of our talls and had no choice but to go fast. Since then we have seemed to want to slow it down all the time, go with short kicks etc.

Don't get it to be honest. Did not like what I saw today. That is not the game plan to dismantle Richmond, they would destroy that short kicking game.

The disappointment out of today’s game was at no stage did we look to just open the game up and run and gun the ball either by hand or by foot—-it showed the same problems as last season really.
Slow build up and no key forwards able to take a contested mark or mark on the lead and create space.
There was a point early, Cox on a lead, looks promising, Cox drops a simple chesti. it looked quite slick, then all stuffed up from there.

Is that right? Pendles was arguably bog among the leagues elite in the bushfire game, had arguably his consistent best over the last two years. He's a unique player in that he doesn't have and never has had leg speed, he's able to bend time to his will - he literally predicts (99% of the time correctly) where and when the ball is going to be.

There is no other player past or present that can equal that ability and may likely never be one to follow. Leg speed is not required and your brain doesn't slow at 32. His footy nous is considered elite. Make no mistake he is still an elite player in the competition.

As far as Sides goes he's 28 - his best footy is certainly not behind him, an elite wingman. At his best he almost snagged a brownlow, the only reason he can't reach his best again is if we continue on this inefficient game plan. Trying to control transition has proven not to work for us, return to what serves us best and make no mistake these two will feature heavily in influence in the comp this year.

To be clear, I love them both and Pendles has never looked in better nick but the reality is that both have clocked 300+ games and their impact will start to decline from here. That’s not bagging either of them - they’re both champions - but apart from imports Treloar and Adams (and the disastrous return of Beams) we haven’t drafted or developed a genuine A-grade mid in years.

Ultimately to prolong their careers, I see Sidey moving forward and Pendles moving back but who will replace them in the engine room as game-breaking leaders? Hopefully one or two will emerge this season - but I doubt it’s any of Phillips, Wills or the Brown boys.

My take

Missed opportunity to play Cameron & Keane today

We can’t keep playing Cox if nothing is different with his game over last year.

Stephenson & WHE really need to pick up their game in a hurry & provide headache options for the opposition with Elliott & JDG down there as well ( Stevo won’t play for the first few rounds )

Defence got a lot of good practice today and stood up

Q. What happen to Mihocek after halftime?

Need to be much more direct & move it quickly instead of that sideways shit, Had Brown kicked that goal late we probably win

Grundy ran around at half pace today and looked like he was counting his money !

Overall good enough against a full strength Saints team that had much more to prove.

After halftime we literally had a very much unders in talent on the ground yet we stood up. With a bit be skill in close & ball use we could have pulled off an upset

Bring on Rd 1

King looked good until we started playing in front.

Elliot, Howe, Degoey, Crisp a cut above the rest.

I think Cox needs to be dropped until he starts clunking more marks.

young players that do not bring heat to the contest also dropped, there is no exercise for lack of effort. Daicos mainly here.

Roughhead is a great player. Great addition by the recruiting team.

Thomas, WHE and Phillips need to find some form stat!

Mihocek is a lock for round 1, does so much right.

I prefer Tyler to Callum as a long term prospect. Loved their linking up through the middle.

would prefer somebody more damaging in the backline to Noble...IQ, Shaz or Murphy?

Wills, not sold. But I guess has a spot with the two eager beavers in Treloar and Adams our. Seriously at this rate we will be without a team by round 5!

Maynard really needs to take a step towards AA contention this year otherwise he won’t be fulfilling his potential.

My only concern is for long periods of the game we didn't even look like scoring at all. Not in the slightest. But that's what these games are for, have a hitout and disect what went right and what went wrong and look to improve!

We took Pendlebury and Adams off at half time and then De Goey and Moore at 3/4 time. We did not care about the result lol. Some people on here really need to relax lol

We saw the fast ball movement in the Richmond game. Reckon that's what we're aspiring for. It's something that's hard to execute with the midfield we were running with in the 2nd half.

Better than running full pace and pinging a hamstring in a tune up game.

Honestly, it’s not even the NAB Challenge anymore because there *is* no challenge. It’s a conditioning and touch exercise, with the coaches throwing things around a bit while simultaneously not wanting to give anything away for round 1. Move along, nothing to see here!

For starters just because Sides has played 234 games and he's just turned 29, 30 years is not the cliff anymore. Did Pav or the Harveys fall off that cliff after 30? No, Did Tony Shaw? No.

If anything he is one season post his arguably best year, to suggest he won't get back to his best is highly speculative. Highly.

Pendles: like I said he does not need leg speed to continually impact games. His worst games are still a call up 22 in any team in this competition, can't dispute that.

The form of this man currently suggests he's not dropping off any.

As for your argument on the midfield, yes that would be an issue IF Pendles dropped form at the drop of a hat and Sides doesn't get back to potential. This club is gunning for a flag that is evident. why not use your guns to achieve that?

I am if anything more pessimistic than most on here on our chances this year, not because we're going backwards but because the other teams in contention seemingly have more window.

What you're suggesting is speculative at best. Pendles is in his usual week in week out exceptional consistency and Sides is too young to call past it.

Again with the sensible! That Richmond game had many positives purely from a game style perspective. I'd argue you're presumption is correct, I'm more than the certain the match committee and coaching panel realize that the controlling transition game does not suit.

I'm not sold on Wills either (but I'm too often wrong). He has a real thirst for the contest but seems to lack the tricks and speed to be more than a battering ram.

I love the passion that everyone here shows and we should all know the result doesn’t matter. However, there are some concerns about the manner in which we had our colours lowered today which have been rightly pointed out.

First of all, let’s highlight that Pendles played 36% game time, Adams 55%, De Goey 73% and Moore 77%. Realistically, when they threw everything at us and only prevailed by 11 points with the cavalry we had on the line I’d be more concerned if I was in their camp.

Stating the obvious, our forward line and poor forward entries are the most glaring thing in need of being addressed. As I’ve said elsewhere, if you remove JDG and Billy from that area of the ground our output suffers. Four of our starting six forwards had less than ten disposals. Let’s give them the benefit of the doubt, but it would indicate that they aren’t in great form to start the year and that the connection between kids and forwards needs to improve. The latter point obviously not assisted by our slow ball movement today which allowed them to set up behind the ball.

Given our issues up forward I’d be loath to toy with the back six. Moore, Howe, Roughead, Noble, Maynard and Crisp. Lock it in regardless of any suggestions of giving Crisp midfield time.

On the forwards, given the make up of our front six we can’t be moving the ball as slowly as we did today. We need bounce from the back half and daring use through the middle. Cox gets nudged off the ball too easily and I’d happily back Cameron to at least deliver the same as he does but tend to think Cox will be given first crack.

Finally to the mids, I’d play De Goey there for centre bounces and keep him largely forward the rest of the time. We lose too much with him not being forward of the ball, not to mention it creates opposition panic. Pendles and Adams (assuming fit) are obvious for round one and, while not sold, Wills can maintain his place against a strong-bodied midfield brigade of the Dogs. He somehow needs to work on covering the ground better and kicking the thing. Elliott should play forward/mid for the same reasons as JDG.

WHE gets way too many chances and rarely delivers. I’m concerned about our forward line, still yet to have a really good key forward. Miochek is a good option forward, DeGoey is needed in the midfield and the rest are role players.
Would rather Keane in before Madgen, Tyler needs game time this year, Daicos a definite improver but a key forward is needed. I wonder what end Will Kelly will be played at in the VFL?
Finals team, yes but we need a lot of luck and big improvements from the whole list.

That's a lot of two way running for the young fella, at 24 in a weeks time he has not yet built enough tank to play majority mid minutes. Tank although late will come in time, my speculation is that he will be groomed as a mid.

Right now he's a forward and a nightmare for all the defenders in the league.

Wills tries hard but he just isn't good enough, his ball use is terrible and slow
A haircut would make Wills less conspicuous in general play.

I am surprised he didn't play rugby rather than aussie rules. His strength and bullocking style would seem more at home in a scrum forward than an inside mid. He's strong and good back up and played a role late last year, but hopefully an in form Sier will replace him.
