Thanks for the replies, after reading all that I'll definitely get ME1 and do all 3 in order, carrying my characters over. Got about half way through ME1 ages ago but never finished it for some reason and must have traded it in or something.

What's with this interactive comic btw? Haven't heard about it yet...Is it set to ME1's story and will your character from that carry over to ME2, or will they make ME2 a comic also? Thanks again.

Edit: Nm, just found some info on it...Quite a cool idea. Will either do this or just finish ME1.

I played ME2 first and then went back and played ME1, it really did feel dated, the combat especially. Probably the first ten or so hours I only got through because I liked the second one so much but towards the end it does get really good as you get pulled deeper into the story.

My advice is play through ME1 but don't bother with any side missions or anything like that, just stick to the core story and get through it.

It's for the PS3 players benefit as ME1 is exclusive to XBOX. It supposedly gives you a run down on ME1's story and you get to make the choices in the comic that are required to carry over into ME2.

Agree with this, the side missions are pretty repetitive in ME1.

Thanks again guys, now it's just a matter of whether I go the interactive comic route or just play through the main story of ME1.....Not sure yet but either way will do the trick. Then it's a second run through of ME2, this time with the 3 add-ons I just downloaded, and then ME3 next year to finish it all off :thumbsu:

Going the comic route is only possible for PS3 owners when they purchase ME2 mate.

If you're considering playing ME1 i imagine you have an XBOX/PC, in which case the comic isn't available.

When Electronic Arts and BioWare announced that Mass Effect 2 was coming to the PS3, they also revealed that it would include an interactive comic book from Dark Horse Comics to get PS3 gamers caught up on the series. Now they've revealed that the Mass Effect: Genesis comic will be available on the PC and Xbox 360 as well.

Got a $50 EB gift voucher for chrissy, going to use it to get ME2. Meant to do this ages ago, but followed the advice on here to play ME1 first. Havent played ME1 in ages up until the long weekend, up to the final boss now (its proving to be difficult to beat). Love the story line though, cant wait to see what happens in ME2 and ME3.

One problem I have though - I accidently started my ME1 game on my non-live account, meaning I cant get any of the downloadable content. Can you transfer saved game files across different accounts?

Don't think you can, though you can get the DLC on your Gold account and play it on your non-live account (hence getting your transfers).

Times like this I wish I had an Xbox just to play through Mass Effect 1.

Torn between getting this (for PS3) and LittleBigPlanet 2. They both come out on the same day and I know if I get both I'll just leave one to gather dust until I finish the other

Cheers for the tip, Ill try that out.

This game is amazing btw. Should have bought this ages ago, just an incredible game. Played as an infiltrator in ME1, changed to be a Vanguard in this game. Lot of fun, the Biotic Charge adds a whole new element to combat, makes shotties so deadly.

How long did it take you guys to finish? Is it longer than the original?

So, a few questions to ask for those Mass Effect gamers out there.

After watching GiantBomb's GOTY award for GOTY - which was ME2 - they did a video playthrough of some of the game. Brad said that he plays as a Soldier and couldn't imagine doing it any other way, looking through the comments (which don't expect to see stuff that you would on a majority of other sites, this stuff is generally fairly clean and proper) they mention that Soldier is probably one of the worst classes to play as you apparently 'miss out on a lot of stuff'?

So for those who have given both ME's a go, what classes did you choose and what was the decision on?

Personally in the ME2 demo I did go for the Soldier as it seemed to suit my gamestyle more (for example I'm very much an SMG guy and Soldier was really the only one with SMG specs).

Also, has anyone that has played through both ME and ME2 given ME2 a go without the ME save to see how different the game actually plays out?

I think that with a solider its just a lot more bland than the other classes. The soldier is essentially just shooting at his enemies, whereas the others use trippy powers as well as shooting and you can mix up the way you fight with each scenario.

I've done both with and without an imported save and when you start without a save it gives you a questionnaire thing to determine some options, and other things that occurred in ME1 were just defaulted. (I'm not sure if these are randomised or if everyone gets the same defaults.)

So what would you offer up as the best class that can offer a bit of both I guess? I guess if I end up feeling that it's a little bland on my first playthrough I can always start another save.

How different was the non-saved ME2 from carrying it over? Did you notice a lot of changes, etc.?

Personally I went for Vanguard. Started it in ME1 and carried it over to ME2 and stuck with it. You get some great abilities such as Charge and Pull as well as the SMG and shotgun (which is next to useless in ME2). Soldier is definitely a bit bland for me. Sure you get all the ammo types and Adrenaline Rush, but you can just use your party members for specialised ammo as well as your own (Incendiary and Cryo as Vanguard) and you've got other abilities.
