masten what's his future?

Right at the moment he is bringing nothing to the team. He is too slow and hasn't bulked up enough to be able to have any influence over the game, whether it be in the middle of the ground or elsewhere.

His only hope is that he hits the gym hard during the off season and MOST IMPORTANTLY has an injury free season. If he cant add bulk to his frame he will continue to get smashed and be useless. Actually feel sorry for him, looks like a kid playing with men out there at the moment.

I don't think he was as bad last night as everyone is making out
He is shit.

Continues to unimpress.

Woeful decison making, has one good kick for every 3 bad ones.

Not good enough for this level, from what he has shown thus far.

Like most i've been hoping he will come good. I'll give him another 2 season's but at the moment im not that impressed. I too think Shepherd has already over taken him.

A-Grade

Without a doubt

Agree and if he was traded, we would be regretting it for years. The one thing I would add though, he is A-Grade that has been stuffed up really bad coaching. The development coaching would have to be worst in the comp, its not just Masten, Swift, Ebert, Brown, the list goes on and on.

Woosha and the rest deserve the sack over the failure to develop the young players. Would be not surprise if in a year time, Sheppard gets added to the list even though he is a rare highlight now.

Watched him closely at the game last night, and hes got a long way to go.

Needs to focus more on playing within a team for the team. Seemed to not take the best sacrificial option, which made it harder for him to have effective disposals. If he had taken the simplest option and let his team mate look good, he would have looked much better himself. Ebert is a long way ahead at the moment, and i would send Masten to the WAFL for the rest of the season.

On purely last nights performance.
Smith > (Ebert/Sheppard/Stevenson) > Masten

What i do like:
Good endurance runner, at least at training, one touch pick ups, can be creative with handball.
.

he was spent before 3/4 time - whats the issue - training not reflecting match conditioning needs, or masten wont work duirng a game?

The fact that he is slow and unfit during games (i havent seen him train) flies in the face of the consistant 'play him more in the middle' arguement from his fans.

he cant

He doesn't look anything special at the moment, but you've got to keep in mind he's had injury issues with the OP and knee's and still only played 40 odd games, so he's behind the eight ball compared to most his other 2007 draft peers and until he gets a sustained injury free run it's hard to tell what he's truly capable of.

Needs a rocket, big time. He just wanders around with no intensity whatsoever as if hes the first person picked in the team everyweek. WAFL please. I think he'll become a good contributor eventually, but doing what hes doing now isn't going to help him get there. Mind you it was the derby where he started to find some form before being injured, so they might be hoping its what sparks him a second time.

Basically every WC fan needs to take a deep breath and step back. He wasnt that bad last night, yes he needs more intensity and probably fitness so he can play midfield but I thought he did some quite clever stuff last night. He's very low on confidence (I wonder why with so many supporters backing him) and injuries not only impacted him through the majority of the season but also his preseason aswell.

If I didnt know better I would say that OP is a troll because that recruiting him because he is 'family' line is classive Freo troll material. Its completely untrue because he is not related to Woodhouse in the slightest.

Masten's draft was a very weak one. West Coast were desperate to get their hands on pick 2 for Cotchin but it didnt fall that way. Take a look at the next selections after Masten;
- Pick 4. Cale Morton: Struggling for Melb, was dropped 2 weeks ago.
- Pick 5. Jarrod Grant: Mental case skinny forward who has only played 5? games. Yay.
- Pick 6. David Myers: Cant get a game for Essendon.
- Pick 7. Palmer: Basically a clone of Masten.
- Pick 8. Lachan Henderson: Plodder KPP.
- Pick 9. Ben McEvoy: Dinisaur ruck.
- Pick 10. Dangerfield: this is the one pick after Masten that would be preferred but he was considered abit of a reach at pick 10, if you took him at pick 3 then you would have been laughed out of town. He was a high'ish risk pick that came off but he was a half back flanker who averaged 15 touches at TAC level. Every chance he would have been a dud. Well done to Crows though.
- Pick 11. Patrick Vespremi. No done anything for Swans.
- Pick 11. Rioli: he would have left after 2yrs. The Crows wanted to draft him badly but in the end they had to overlook him because he basically told them he would not be able to play out of Melbourne. Once again, if you took him at pick 3 you would have been laughed out of town. He was talented but had very few runs on the board and a chance he wouldnt even last 2yrs in the West.

So I would love any fan whining about Masten to point out who they would have taken in that draft. As I said, if you did take Rioli it wouldnt have worked and Dangerfield would have been a massive risk as many though he would go 12-30 and nowhere near top 3.

While we are on it, take a look at the draft afte Ebert. Same thing. West Coast were just unlucky that this extremely weak draft fell on the year that you lost Judd. There is very little talent at all in the top 40.

On his future?

A Lions poster wants Masten for Mitch Clarke PLUS the Lions 2nd rounder.

THAT would be very good for us IMO.

We get a decent KP FF would loves playing ruck plus a low 2nd rounder to use on another small. Lamb maybe:thumbsu::thumbsu:

Would mean structurally we could afford to trade Lynch, delist / retire Hansen, trade McKinely and even Sullivan. Lynch, McKinely and Sullivan should net us another 2nd rounder plus a 3rd rounder, even lower if we tried for a pick upgrade.

I presume everyone is aware that you are wrong about him being a nephew! He is Woodhouse's wife's godson and Woodhouse stood out of the decision on recruiting him.

Yes I remember this. Woodhouse had ties of some sort so he didn't play a part in the recruiting.

Masten was hanging around and working at the cub a lot prior to be drafted. He really wanted to be drafted by the Eagles. Unfortunately I think this did have a say in the decision. But back then, they're all just kids with potential so of course that's going to swing your vote.

Not all players ooze class like Sheppard in their first year. Give Masten another five years he will slowly progress.

I think some people here are seriously underrating his potential. His best position is midfield, no doubt about it. He does not have poor disposal, see his games in 2008, he was hitting bullet passes into JK, it was brilliant to see.

His primary benefit is his elite endurance and consistent speed throughout the day. He hasn't been able to run for 4 of the past 9 months. How do you think his endurance is gonna be going right now? How about his speed? Yeah, he is not the fastest player over 20m, but when fit, he runs all day long at a pretty decent pace.

I think he isn't being played in the guts because he doesn't have the fitness to keep up with the midfield currently. The commentators were saying every time he comes off he was spent. He used to come off looking ready to go back again. He is therefore being rotated through the midfield not getting significant time cos he just can't keep up.

If he can actually train in the pre-season this year he'll be much better for it. He won't do any better in the WAFL though this year. May as well increase his experience in the AFL and then hopefully he comes in next year with a good fitness base and ready to go 100% in the midfield.

Masten was better than Sheppard last night. Anyone who thinks otherwise has been smoking too much crack. Or not enough.

High picks get a phenomenal run on the selection table- when you compare him to someone like Jamie McNamara, the only difference in their AFL careers is the extent of the opportunities Masten has been given.

He has a couple of years left, but at this stage he has not shown anything to suggest he will live up to his billing. Looks a complete dud.

I'll have some of that - one holding the ball, and, let's face it, there would ahve abeen another one at the minimum if it wasn't Subi.

Masten has no awareness, his kicking lets him down, and he is ass-lazy. He is firmly in the debit column and it is very, very difficult to see what he contributes now, and just as difficult to see why exactly some folks think that he is going to be a 'gun'. Utterly unlikeable player.
