Opinion Matthew Nicks: Adelaide's Coach (Part 2) - Full Support of the Board

Is Matthew Nicks the right coach for Adelaide?

  • Firmly yes (I love what I'm seeing)

  • Leaning yes

  • Can't decide either way

  • Leaning no (but don't sack him yet)

  • Firmly no (he should be sacked)

Won’t get you anywhere.

Do they really understand footy? Go and ask Shanti Berggren, Stephen Roche or others for an in-depth analysis of last weekends performance. ‘Number 14’ played well would be as good as it gets. Even Roo struggles to articulate the positives and negatives.

They all have their snouts in the trough, there for their corporate skills rather than a passion for the club.

On-field performance is a secondary priority compared to the free schmoozing at the Matchday Corporate Events.
Um... do they get paid?

I love this from Nicks:

"Billy's playing some good footy.... At SANFL level"

"
If a player at lower level is ready to go, they will come into our side, if they are able to play and live the values that we need to live"

The condescending arrogance.

How are the players still supporting this bloke?

You’ll see in the next few weeks how much “support” he has (or hasn’t).

Completely and totally out of his depth. Needs to go immediately.

I would love to help spam the club with questions and calm, considered opinions, but sadly a WCE supporter with no membership number or the like would not be taken seriously…

I hope all those who genuinely want to, will contact them, at least asking questions as to why the coach is so reluctant to debut new players, why it appears that players in the reserves are considered inferior, why the gameplan (what was working last year) has been completely dismantled, etc etc.

Tis a long list. Time to make noise, as futile as it may seem, anything could help.

If it's anything like the last mob it won't get you anywhere. I essentially got told a player was lying when reporting their own injuries by the last CEO.

They aren't. He's so full of shit.

The sort of thing you say when you're flying at 5-1. It's still arrogant and condescending then as well, but at least you've got the credits to have that view.

But with the shitshow we currently are, and Nicks himself even admitting we haven't been getting it right, to deny youngsters an opportunity because they aren't ready is absurd. It assumes that those being picked are ready, and play and live the values.

If playing and living our values gets us what they've dished up the first 6 rounds, we need new values.

This is so Adelaide.

As I always say, players come and go, coaches come and go, board members come and go - but the one constant are the supporters and members, they are the ones that live and breathe a football club. It is part of our lives for our whole life, we don’t swap allegiance (we most of us don’t). The only thing that changes with us is our level of engagement. Sadly, that can be tested at times.

Is that relevant?

It isn’t a 5 days a week, 8 hours a day job.

Shit a number of individuals are on multiple boards of companies. That is their job.

The board of a football club is different to being on the board of a company (either private or public). You should have a passion for the football club.

My email to Tim Silvers and Adam Kelly:
Hi Tim and Adam,

I hope this email finds you well. It comes from a passionate Adelaide Crows fan of 30 years.

These are two answers from questions that Matthew Nicks answered in today's press conference (I transcribed it from YouTube).

Q: Are you reluctant to blood new players this year?
A: No not at all and you know we want to make sure we do that at the right time for the individual, uh and for the team, so we you know if a player at a lower level's ready to go they'll come into our side if they're able to play and live the values that we need to live. The last thing we want to do is bring a player in that's not ready for that... um at this point in time even our guys that are in the team are working on making sure the focus is right going into games, prioritizing what needs to be prioritized and that's you know when our supporters watch us play they expect to see a contest, they expect to see us go hard. They didn't see that on the weekend so rightfully so they should be disappointed.

Q: A lot of supporters are clamouring to see the likes of Dowling finally get a game and it's not yet happening, that elevation?
A: Yeah look, Billy's knocking on the door and he's a chance to play, has been spoken about you know for a few weeks now... um Billy's the first to say he's still working on his game... um and he gets that and wants to make sure he's ready to go as well... in saying that, if I said to Billy right now you're in he would he would jump at the chance but he's still working on areas of his game as are others that at the SANFL level... um so those people that are that are chomping at the bit to get Billy into our team, let's make sure we are watching SANFL as well and maybe not just disappointed with what we're seeing at AFL level.

I have highlighted in yellow a comment that has angered a lot of Crows fans. To be condescending to supporters about whether they watch the SANFL is a very dangerous path to go down and reminded everyone of these comments by a board member at the end of 2019 in Mark Ricciuto: https://www.espn.com.au/afl/story/_/id/27460817/ricciuto-sorry-crows-fans-backlash

Plenty of our supporter base closely watch the AFL and SANFL each and every week, so we are more than qualified to comment on performances at SANFL not being rewarded while the AFL team is 1-5 and has many senior players out of form or playing injured. Matthew's comments are only angering supporters further and a win against the worst team of the last 5 years this week will not change that view.

Does Matthew think supporters just plucked Billy Dowling and Dan Curtin out of nowhere as players that should be tried at AFL level, without first seeing them at SANFL level? Curtin was recruited as a top 10 selection in last years draft and all scouting reports of his U18 form had him as ready made for AFL level. Is it a surprise that supporters will be rightfully frustrated to see an injured and out of form Brodie Smith play ahead of him against Essendon, in a role that Curtin is very suited for with his offensive weapons and strong reading of the play? If it is, I am very worried about the direction of this club under the current coaching group.

All we can see right now is a coaching group that are very biased towards players that have been on the list since the start of this rebuild, regardless of their form and regardless of team performance. We are fed up with the same excuses about 'process' and blaming players as out of form. Where is the accountability from Nicks? If it's the players fault, why are the same group of 25 players recycled each week? Why does Sholl rotate in/out on a fortnightly basis? Clubs at the top of the ladder have experimented with more players this year than a club that sits bottom 4, that should surely be alarming to you both.

I appreciate the time you've both taken to read this and hope to hear from you soon.

“If a player at lower level is ready to go, they will come into our side, if they are able to play and live the values that we need to live"

Seriously… what the actual fxxk is this focus group think nonsense?.. sounds like something you’d expect to hear at a cult leaders convention.

What fxxkin values is he talking about here?..

And what the fxxk do they matter if the performance on the field is just utter garbage?.. is “trying hard even though you are playing horrible footy” one of these values?..

Sounds like the now long held Hamish O “kid comes from a great family” value/policy when it comes to picking potential draftees has now crept its way into the list of selection policies..

Someone please blow up the club.. its completely fxxkn cooked.

Keeping the opponent under 100 points…. win lose or draw!
I don't think it'd be 100. The game plan that we used against Carlton kept them to under 100, and Nicks then reverted to type. I bet under 80 is the goal, in which case we're 4-2 and definitely finals bound this season.

It was a completely disgraceful presser...

Arrogant, defensive, full of excuses... If I was Silvers I would be hauling in Nicks and Kelly into my office this afternoon and demanding some explanations and putting them on notice. Totally unacceptable some of the stuff said about the younger players/SANFL players.

Boy I hope we lose to Norf just so the heat ratchets up even more.

Defensive is the word

Obviously they have been hearing the noise from outside the club but I imagine some of those questions are starting to be asked from within too

Walls closing in

Will Goodings said earlier in the week that the only question his Dad gets on the street atm are about the football and list departments, so the club would definitely know how most supporters view them right now.

I'm good mates with a guy that works in a pretty senior role at Bendigo Bank here in Melb at Docklands office who is an avid Crows fan and used to actively seek out Richard Fennell (when he was in the office) and ask him his thoughts on where we are at.

My mate told me in last 12 months Richard just completely avoids him as tries to avoid any conversation on the Crows.

Wow watching it now:

“Dowling knows he’s got things to work on”
“But if I asked Billy if he wants to play he’d jump at it”
“We have players in the SANFL with stuff to work on”
“So for those calling for players to play I hope they are watching the SANFL and not just reacting to what’s happening in the AFL”

Right so only players in the SANFL have stuff to work on. Ignore the s**t out of form players in the AFL, watch for the deficiencies in our SANFL players.

It’s even worse than that George!!

When asked how he thought the defence was going … we got “aren’t they doing well for an inexperienced group?” “Keane has hardly played AFL at all, he’s still learning”!!

And yet the guys at the next level down have to do all their learning BEFORE they get a toe in the water?

Neil Craig V2

One set of rules for his golden tickets, another set for everyone else.

It’s a joke. Wish we had the same performance rules for coach extensions as the young talent in our list had to deal with… coaches with no history of success must prove themselves BEFORE they are given 2 year extensions.

Only Adelaide would play Smith, McHenry and Murphy over Oscar, Dowling and Curtin … then brag about the process that delivers such mediocre decisions.

Certainly that's part of it. But we also needed them to WANT to stay. Given the plethora of departures after THAT game and camp, he definitely turned the locker room psyche from being a place they couldn't get out of quick enough to one of a place they wanted to be a part of and that the players were playing for each other. It's a markedly different place from 2019.

Every player, with the exception of McAdam, left for money

Even Lever wanted to stay if we met his price
