Is Matthew Nicks the right coach for Adelaide?

  • Firmly yes (I love what I'm seeing)

  • Leaning yes

  • Can't decide either way

  • Leaning no (but don't sack him yet)

Not a bad read. Not a huge amount of analysis though, reasonable perspective though

Thompson had won about 50% of all his games with Geelong up until 2007, and had played 3 finals series, including a run to the Prelim in 2005 which were it not for a crazy last 30 seconds should have been a GF appearance. He had also helped build a list that was incredibly strong and destined for greatness.

He had the added benefit of being a 2 times best and fairest and 3 times premiership player - including 1 as captain - playing under one of the all time great coaches of the game.

Hardwick was a two times premiership player at two different clubs, an All Australian and a best and fairest winner at Essendon. He too, played under 2 coaching greats.

Hardwick had won about 50% of his games up until his premiership year and had Richmond play in 3 finals series leading up to 2017.

There were reasons for both of these clubs to stick by these coaches despite feelings that the clubs had underperformed.

Does anyone really need me to compare Nicks’s coaching record and all round standing in the game to these two to understand why backing in those guys was a gamble worth taking and why we should part ways with Nicks as soon as possible?

FFS, he is 5 years into this job.

If he hasn’t required one so far, is this just to justify his two year extension?

So pathetic.
Clearly it's an admission they realise now Nicks is not up to the job.

Simplest solution is to move him into Kelly's role, sack Kelly & bring in someone like Buckley who can actually coach.

but what is kellys role? its not a role. sack kelly yes. but nix cant do something that doesnt exist.

In the finals thread we were talking about Adam Kingsley and it got me thinking. Is Nicks really the worst of the 18 coaches?

Sydney - John Longmire - premiership coach, 4 grand finals, makes finals consistently, clearly superior to Nicks

Port - Ken Hinkley - terrible finals record but makes finals often, therefore superior to Nicks

Geelong - Chris Scott - multiple premiership coach, clearly superior to Nicks

GWS - Adam Kingsley - multiple finals appearances and finals wins, superior to Nicks

Brisbane - Chris Fagan - question marks but made finals almost every year, clearly superior to Nicks

Bulldogs - Luke Beveridge - question marks but premiership coach, clearly superior to Nicks

Hawthorn - Sam Mitchell - surged ahead in rebuild, made finals, won final, superior to Nicks

Carlton - Michael Voss - made and won final, superior to Nicks

Collingwood - Craig McRae - premiership coach, clearly superior to Nicks

Fremantle - Justin Longmuir - has made and won finals, superior to Nicks

Essendon - Brad Scott - coached ordinary North list to prelims, superior to Nicks

St Kilda - Ross Lyon - question marks but coached multiple finals wins and several grand finals, clearly superior to Nicks

Gold Coast - Damien Hardwick - multiple premiership coach, clearly superior to Nicks

Melbourne - Simon Goodwin - big question marks but premiership coach, superior to Nicks

Adelaide - Nicks - never made finals in 5 attempts

West Coast - was Adam Simpson, replacement unknown - Simpson is a premiership coach, clearly superior to Nicks

North Melbourne - Alastair Clarkson - multiple premiership coach, clearly superior to Nicks

Richmond - Adem Yze, gets a mulligan due to decline of premiership list, superior to Nicks until shown otherwise

Yep, he really is the worst.

thanks for that. got any valium for us?

yeh its bad. look how many of them have flags too.

theres only yze who has no case to say hes better wow

I won't count West Coast because its permanent coaching position is vacant, but of the 17 active coaches, 7 are premiership coaches. 9 have at least made grand finals. Yze and Nicks are the only two who have never made finals. Yze has had 1 attempt with a rapidly declining list and Nicks has had 5.
You wouldn't pick Nicks over any other current coach, he's clearly the worst in the AFL.

You wouldn't..... but who do you take this risk on in the hypothetical that we do sack him midway through next season
