For those interested in a look at the realities of trying to make a career in football Ii recommend a book called "The Struggle for the body, mind and soul of AFL footballers." Authored by Peter Kelly and Christopher Hickey 2008.

Sheds a light on what they describe as a sports entertainment business and the spotlight and scrutiny that ensues for individuals. its kind of a downer when you realise your passion for a particular team is really just buying into the sports entertainment industry.

It's been like that for a very long time, supporters don't care. People know that there is palm oil in the food they buy, they still buy it.

Hmmm i wonder. The Bennel trade was what 48 hrs in?

But on that, A few of your freo supporter mates are saying no trade was offered.

So which is it?

When the answer is "he is a required player and will not be traded", then you move on to the next trade, get it done, and come back later. Gubby and the Goof Troop did not want to trade Cam, and that's their right. They knew he had issues and again, it was their right to do nothing. However, the consequences of this may be far reaching in that any player with a tiny bit of doubt in their mind will no longer sign on long term before their current contracts expire. The fact that they did not change their plan of attack during trade week just screams indecision.

If they knew he had a problem (and they claim they did), then surely they should have looked after player welfare (they backed themselves in, yes, but they've never had the runs on the board in this department). Now they are saying that Cam should not be playing any football this year anyway - a good get out clause for themselves. But this is probably just their opinion. They don't seem to have a clue.

That's why Aish, Treloar, Anderson, etc. all stayed put.

Maybe next Freo can reconsider their offer rather than stamping their feet in protest and spending their big picks on a guy with serious attitude issues.

So you gave a small offer and then 48 hrs said "nah the offer is off the table?"
Good to see you guys were serious.

But as i said. There are quite a few freo boys and girls who say no offer was made.

So which is it?

An offer was made or none were. You guys need to get on the same page.

If you hadnt noticed. No one has any idea. The kid seems to be not well at all. Hense the time off.

Edit. Dang it you got me to come into the thread again.

It's baffling that Freo, who are in desperate need for a long term KPF solution wouldn't give up a decent but not top tier 23-27 y.o. player in a straight swap. If anyone has failed from a list management perspective it's the Dockers.

It's not baffling at all. A "decent" player is not what GWS wanted. For all the people pontificating about how Freo stuffed up and could have easily got it done, I'm still yet to see anyone propose an actual (and reasonable) trade which we should have done. It's a cop out to just say "something better" and not say what that actually is. Based on the stance GWS took (which they were entitled to do, even if I don't agree with it), it was basically impossible for us to get the trade done with anything other than an offer which was ridiculous and completely unreasonable for Freo.

Says you! Cats offered similar than that for a far superior player to Sunshine. You need to get a grip. Massive overs for an unproven forward. Sure, he is under contract but doesn't make that much of a diference. Pick 9 and 28 is 2146. Minus pick 50 you got back leaves you coughing up 1873 points for Danger. If they coughed up pick 22 and lets say pick 19 next year, thats equivalent to 1793 points. 80 points short of Danger value on points. Keep trolling, Motley.

Completely different situations mate.

Nice stats though.

What did you give up for unproven key forward Tom Boyd?

He can't be allowed to play at Fremantle this year. Sets a horrible precedent for the league. Seriously some people need to htfu though. Many people move from Perth to Sydney as there are better job opportunities. You want to play AFL thats what you may have to do.

PS dont sign a contract you dont want to fulfill

It's a joke to suggest that Freo didn't have the players to get a trade done. Crozier, Suban, Pearce, Sheridan, Mzungu and, yes, even Barlow are all non-essential personnel that could have been packaged to get the deal done. Other clubs do it all the time.

Instead, Freo cut their noses off to spite their faces and are staring down the barrel of a 2017 with spuds like Tabener as your KPF and Zac Clarke as your ruckman (lol).

Would expect players to lose weight as the preseason begins. The 9kg is perhaps 4 or 5 in reality.

Players normally put on weight over preseason not lose it, especially young players. They hit the gym pre Christmas and bulk up over the off season. Everyone then say's "wow he's huge, look at those guns".

Then as the season progresses player cut down. They don't do the big weights sessions and all the match day running and training cuts back more weight.

To lose 9kg means he's done no weights at all and could be crook.

All the players you have mention excepted for Barlow only have a third round pick value at best and GWS don't want borderline players.

By the way, GWS refused to deal with Fremantle (they have right to do that). Freo mention two first round picks via the media. Maybe, GWS might have got more than 2 first round picks but who knows.

What load crap, which of the above players would you take for Ried or Tippett then. The Giants did not want to release him which was there right as he was contracted.

You find a house that isn't on the market and you speak with owner and he says that the house isn't for sale. The owner makes it very clear that he won't speak to you any more. You via friends say that you are willing to pay $500000 for the house, which gets back to the owner. The owner doesn't want to move and doesn't contact you.

Did you make an offer?

Carlton only need one of them to turn out to be a reasonable player to have done well from the deal. Its not like they traded much.

So how did he suddenly lose 9 kilos? Its the pre-season. The players would be getting weighed and body fat checked every day or 2. Hard to see how this suddenly became a thing.

Disagree regarding Carlton? It's not just the value of the picks they traded, but clogging your list with 5 or so likely never will be's has a huge opportunity cost.

In fact Freo never made that offer. Colin Young assumed in the media that it would be the offer that would get the job done.
So either he was told by Freo that would be the offer or he made that assumption on his own. Freo traded for Bennell early in the piece so i find it hard to think they had any intention of using it.

After GWS refused to talk about McCarthy (which they have all rights to do) and Freo went onto to the next trade.

In a word, yes!

The facts make a liar of you.

He signed an extension of his contract 5 months after being drafted and before he played a game. He extended for 3 years not 2, so again you are making factually incorrect comments. He extended more than 18 months prior to requesting a trade for personal reasons.

While you go about looking up facts and not invective, look up duty of care towards employees. Thats binding on the club as well.

Now deal with the health issues and stop pretending they don't exist. Even GWS has stopped that pretence. Losing 9 kg in 8 weeks is a pointer to serious issue, so maybe put that into the equation. You can poonce on about contracts all you when the guy is healthy enough to fulfill the contract. You might also want to consider the obligations go two ways. Its not slavery we have here.

Are you out of your mind? It doesn't matter how long the contract is ....he SIGNED a contract! It's not the Marx brothers, the party of the first part signed a bloody contract. Slavery? Health issues? Duty of care? What about duty of compliance to a signed document?

The 20-year-old is understood to have informed the Giants on Wednesday he was homesick and wanted time with family. Okay, fair enough.
"Despite initially making strong progress after returning from the Christmas break it has been apparent that Cam cannot currently meet the demands of being an AFL footballer."

Sure go home, just don't waste the time of clubs and people who put hundreds of thousands of dollars investing in these players from all parts of the country.
GWS are not blameless here either, someone should've clicked that something was up a lot earlier.

This report from 1 week away from trade week 2015: FORWARD Cam McCarthy will remain at GWS next season, but according to his manager Colin Young he will not finish his career at the club. Amazing statement with two years to go on a contract!

McCarthy, a Western Australian native, signed a three-year contract extension with the Giants last year but angled for a move to Fremantle during the trade period. Why would GWS even contemplate this with their guy signed on for two more years? They have made plans around him.

The point is you simply cannot go signing stuff and then change your mind a year later. Personal reasons? Don't go into the draft at all if you just wanna have a kick with your mates on a Saturday afternoon. Admittedly GWS did not do their due diligence in the first place, but he must've been receptive at the beginning?
I have no empathy for players who pull this stunt and screw the team that drafted them within a year or two of beginning their career.

You need to take your Dockers cap off before you type. You will get your man eventually and he will be as happy as Larry....
