McLean trade the best outcome for Melbourne

We got bent over, simple as that.

Until pick 11 proves he's a gun, we got bent over and Carlton are the winners.

No we didnt, Brock wanted to leave and we assisted in gaining an acceptable deal. Simple as that. I doubt McLean would have been part of our next major finals campaign, and not just making the eight but contending for the flag

Theres alot of ifs & buts about this trade

First if & but

Can Brock get back to full fitness & be a solid contibutor for Carlton
over a period of 5-7 years? If he's slow now he wont get much quicker in his late 20s!

Second if & but

How good will the player chosen with pick 11 be?Time will tell,it will most likely be a KP forward, which should please Jack Watts & Liam Jurrah!

Non-Melbourne supporters need to looks at two factors.
1. Mc Lean is sooo slow these days that the way football is going he may be redundant in three years. Yes, his chronic injuries haven't helped but glacier-like pace will never see him as a top liner.
2. Melbourne have too many players like Mclean, namely Moloney, Jones and Valenti.
Melbourne can now take the best two midfielders in the land and use pick 11 to look for a tall forward.

Come on...McLean is a few class levels above Jones and Valenti

3 first round picks is a gold mine.

But, Carlton are the loser here...they probably don't need McLean given the midfield is quite decent...but, losing a first round pick means the problems in KP defence and KP forwward won't be addressed.

They need McLean, their entire midfield is soft - McLean brings some welcome hardness, their star extractor (Judd) is better suited to playing a more outside role

FFS he is only 23.

Are Melbourne seven years away from making the 8 ?

Are you Melbourne supporters as slow as your list management people ?

Understand this.
There are no 17yo's in this draft.

Top shelf 17yo's usually take up 4 or 5 positions in the top 30. (sometimes top 20 in shallow drafts). They won't be there this rime around as the Gold Coast already have them. The draft at the top end has been diluted.

Not quite correct. There are no kids born in 1992 available to the 16 clubs this year. No doubt there will be a couple of 17-year-olds available who were born in December 1991.

The context of the eligibility change was to prevent clubs drafting kids who still needed to complete year 12.

Not only that - the smart clubs took the good 17yo's last year in preparation for this year. So this year there aren't even as many good 18yo's.

What, like Jack Watts and Sam Blease? Right.

Look, in the circumstances, pick 11 is a reasonable return for McLean. No doubt this year's draft isn't as deep as others but in one sense, that only serves to make high picks more valuable than they would otherwise be.

In such a shallow, compromised draft pool, there is no way that we could reasonably expect a return of pick 5 for McLean (who was drafted at pick 5 in 2003).

Of course, it all depends on who we select with pick 11. Carlton has opted to go with a known quantity in McLean and I think he's a good option for them. The Demons have another first-round pick in what will be the least-compromised draft for at least two years, if not three.

I think the trade is a fair reflection of the circumstances of both clubs, and also the circumstances surrounding this year's draft. The rest is speculation.

Definitely the best outcome for Melbourne.

They get the best offer from the Blues possible for a player who does not want to be there.

Makes things interesting though.

If Brock is worth pick 11, I wonder what Shaun Burgoyne is worth?

i reckon opposition supporters are over rating brock.
his best year was his first year. in hind sight he wasn't worth a no. 5 pick.
thanks craig cameron.

My God supporters are fickle.

People saying he hasn't played a great game since he singlehandedly knocked St Kilda out of the finals in 06, that's absolute garbage.

He almost won the the Bluey last year from 13 games, he was exceptional last year before he got injured.

He didn't get a full pre-season and he didn't get to do any sprint training last pre-season which obviously hurt his pace, he was noticeably proppy in games and shouldn't have been playing in the latter parts of this season. He's not the quickest bloke going round but with a full pre-season he'll be a lot quicker than what he was this year.

Carlton are the winners of this trade at this point in time until pick 11 proves otherwise.

which is why we took watts and blease last year, fool.

Mate your not even reading the entire post, just bits you want to read. I said that by the time melbourne contends for a flag, Brock will prob not be in the mix. Now as a melbourne supporter i know his body is very susceptible to breaking down, he is one paced and by the time melb can challenge for a flag (7-8 years) i think he will have lost even more speed, be even more susceptible to injury and unfortunately i think that kind of player will have a limited future. Brock will probably go for another 4-5 years max. His style of game is being weeded out because fast and agile atheltic types are making way. Brock is a footballer, not an athlete. In this day and age, you need to be an athlete

If, as has been reported, he was told the Dees are 4-6 years away then it's a very logical decision from McLean, and fills a need at Carlton.
If they are pulling a hawthorn and using 5 picks in the top 34, then they are probaly 4-6 years away from challenging.

Problem is, they have been rebuilding already for 4 years.

This smells like a Richmond double/triple rebuild. Brock was part of the original rebuild wasn't he? Have the Dees been that shit for that long?

2007, 2008, 2009.

Now my maths isn't that good but I'm almost certain that's three years, 2006 we'd played finals.

It's good to hear some honesty from a melbourne supporter. I agree 100% with what you say. I swear as soon as a club is about to lose a player (carlton included) all of a sudden the supporters say they dont care, they are shit, slow, old, etc.

Massive aquisition to the Carlton Football Club. Will change our midfield structure dramatically.

Trade-wise Carlton are slight winners, even considering McLean's good but not great form over the past two years.

But structure-wise for Carlton, it doesn't look like the best idea. Are they going to win a premiership with just Fev up forward, do they need another target? The likes of Jaimeson, Waite (good player), Thornton and Sentana aren't gonna cut it in the back line. I thought Carlton might have used their first pick on a decent KPP.

Good luck to both teams though.

add 2010 to that
this trade just pisses me off melbourne have to many high draft picks
they're gonna kill in 3 years

Your point? It is part of the rules isnt it? You could trade for picks 1-10 if you wanted. Fremantle just has not recruited well, thats why melb will kill in 3 years when freo should be killing!!!!!!!!

This is not a Richmond-type rebuild! Under Daniher we changed the oil a few times but hard decisions couldn't be made on ordinary older players. In 2003 (played finals 04) we got McLean and Sylvia with pick 3 and 5. Six years later Sylvia hits his straps and Brock is spluttering.
Under Bailey the whole engine is being rebuilt and it will pay dividends for the next decade. After this draft we will have in the vicinity of 20 top-20 draft picks.

Direct comparison

The Saints recruited a whole lot of talent from 2000-2003, the Saints best finals player has been Lenny Hayes recruited in 1998.

Sylvia was playing reserves 3 rounds ago.

it looks like throwing games has cost Melbourne more than just repect.
