McLean trade the best outcome for Melbourne

If as reported they snare the #11 draft pick for him, I believe the Dees are the winners.

He is overrated and has not come a long way in his development from several years ago.

McLean won't get a game for Carlton, if Melbourne get pick 11 (considering their backs are against the wall on this one) it can only be a win or a breakeven, not a loss.

What? McLean is a certain starter and could win a premiership in the next 3 years. Pick 11 could turn out to be a complete spud and play 15 games and be delisted in the next 3 years. Melbourne could easily lose this trade.

Whats your opinion on the Mclean trade?

My opinion is that Melbourne will draft 4 superstars in the top 20 of this years draft to go with their 2 superstars from last year and within 3 years they will go on a dynasty that will see them win 5 straight flags.

I've already said it's a great aquisition for our footy club. It's one of our key targets was some hardness. I have no problem with handing over pick 11 for a 23 year old proven player.

I don't think you come out of the trade that badly if you look at all the picks you will have in the draft.

With a pre season under his belt he will relish playing in our midfield

Who know's what you are planning to do with the pick, but i'm happy with it

Your point? It is part of the rules isnt it? You could trade for picks 1-10 if you wanted. Fremantle just has not recruited well, thats why melb will kill in 3 years when freo should be killing!!!!!!!!
Unfortunatley for u guys u have the ex freo double act pulling the strings down there. Has the stamp of schwab on it. He gets too involved in trading and admitted before he loves the thrill of the deal. In freos case he was buying and here he is selling.
Assuming McLean has not asked to go, I dont know why clubs get rid of perfectly good players, expecially aged 23 - pick 11?? who knows what he will turn out like.
I predict continued future pain for Melbourne. Schwab and connolly are nobs and would not command respect from the playing group.

great trade for carlton imo.

brocks best footy is in front of him. when he gets his body right and has a decent pre season he will be an absolute gun.

will allow judd to be freed up and play more of an outside recieving role which will benefit carlton greatly.

to the other melbourne supporters trying to justify mclean leaving by saying we have too many in and under players and mentioning names such as jones and valenti in the same sentence as mclean is ludicrus.

quality ball winners win you premierships, mclean is a quality and proven ball winner at the age of 23 with his best footy in front of him and when melbourne are pushing for finals would have been an important player in their make up. he is streets ahead of jones and valenti

with that being said, pick 11 could turn out to be a gun, it will be 3-4 years before we know the outcome of this trade. if jones and valenti can step up and become proven/matchwinning ballwinners ala mclean and moloney can continue in his development we could win this trade, but i am very sceptical at the moment.

well done too carlton on securing a quality ball winner who's best football is yet to come

McLean has asked to be traded. Link

McLean met with Melbourne officials on Monday and informed them of his request to be traded from the club.

Don't assume.

And as for your opinions about Schwab and Connolly, you're probably too young to remember that they were ex-Melbourne before they joined Freo.

Those same two people were instrumental in building your club's profile and membership, turning Fremantle from a basket case into a viable football club.

Those same two people were in positions of influence during Fremantle's only winning seasons. Talk about a short memory.

I wouldn't be too quick to condemn them. They've made all the right moves so far at Melbourne and I've got no reason to doubt their ability to oversee the club's 13th premiership.

Carlton are probably winners, HOWEVER, Melbourne have got a first round draft pick which is still very good considering they probably wouldn't have much bargaining power. It's a FAIR deal in the circumstances.

Thats pretty much it. This moment, Carlton clearly winning as they have a player who will improve their list and should be just about ready to hit his best years. In 5 years Melbourne may have a gun player on their hands but equally Brock could still be playing quality football for Carlton at 28. Will be a very intersting trade to revisit.

I don't see how melbourne supporters can say that Brock wouldn't be a part of their next flag unless they believe they have at least 6 more years of pain to look forward to. Brock is no aging star.

What

They're at a club that has 'won' two wooden spoons in a row and not only that oversee a salary cap which is almost at 100% of the cap. Who the f**k they are paying is anyone's guess ?

What tall forward ?

There's none in this draft besides Butcher and even he is questionable.
There has to be a 200 game tall forward just sitting there and waiting to be picked. :thumbsu:

The Demons might be better served to draft a ruckman with 11 and a forward with 18.

Scully, Trengove, Vardy and Panos could be a good draft for the Demons.
3 first round picks is a gold mine.

But, Carlton are the loser here...they probably don't need McLean given the midfield is quite decent...but, losing a first round pick means the problems in KP defence and KP forwward won't be addressed.
There should be a template for your post so everyone can just c & p the rhetoric into their posts.

We needed more grunt in our midfield with Hadley our best inside midfielder.

Mclean gives us that.

Who cares about all that rubbish? Think about the draft picks!!!!

Why is this such a done deal? What happens if during the trade period, the Kangaroos (hypothetical) sidle up to the dees table and offer their first rounder for Mclean, surely they would accept that over Carltons pick 11. Free agency is drawing ominously closer.

They are in short supply of envioromentally friendly brown paper bags down at Arden street.

I don't know where you pulled that from but Melbourne are actually only using just above 92.5%(the minimum) of the salary cap, And are front loading contracts to stay above it......

What are you on about?

We are at the bare minimum of our salary cap, we have a heap of room in our cap.

Melbourne should trade Watts and Blease to the GC for picks, I heard the 2010 draft is going to be a RIPPER, think of the DRAFT PICKS

Point taken about McLean wanting to leave. however it wouldn't surprise me if the football manager has something to do with the rumoured stink down there at melb at the moment.

Schwab and connolly were responsible for the journey that yielded 1 finals win (against a weak melb side at home) the rest of the time was FAIL - we hear it all the time. The list had to be completely cleaned out of duds after they left - I would not want them anywhere near list management. They cover for each other and are in it together - conflicting interests, they are too close imho.

All i can say is i'm glad they are not at freo any more.:)

McLean walked you idiot, It's not like we just offloaded him for another draft pick. I think we did pretty well to get pick 11 for an uncontracted player who wanted to leave.
