Heard Sauce on the radio this morning as I got to work. Only heard a bit of the interview but I think it's funny when AFL players get interviewed by non-AFL people, they asked "When is the next premiership window?" and Sauce hesitates and says "We are on a 5 year plan." When asked about our chances this week the first thing he goes to is a number of Outs that the Eagles have, the presenters immediately picked up on the fact that he didn't pump up his own team.

6 years for a 27 year old doesn't sound like something that the Lions would do, unless they've decided to go against the yoof policy in this instance. The rule has been nothing more than a year post-30 years old. To be honest, it is a policy that has potentially saved us a bit of money as well.

The Stef Martin deal gives him a couple of years in his 30s as well IIRC. So it might not be as strictly enforced as it used to be.

Sounds like Hammo is trying to get someone sacked this weekend.

AFL blog: Lions coach Justin Leppitsch’s fate is in the hands of players

Andrew Hamilton, The Courier-Mail

JUSTIN Leppitsch can do no more.

Nor can Leigh Matthews.

Brisbane’s players will decide Leppitsch’s fate tomorrow at the Gabba.

It has gone beyond talent, tactics, skills etc. The question over Brisbane now is do the players care about their coach?

I’m not suggesting he will be sacked if the Lions lose to West Coast. No one single loss would end his tenure, although I reckon a disaster against Essendon could change that.

That Round 18 match is the wooden spoon game and the best example of why the AFL must consider a draft lottery.

If Leppitsch has a cast-iron guarantee he is coaching next year there is no incentive to win.

If they lose that and he survives no peg on earth will block the stink.

The unfortunate by-product of Matthews’ fierce rhetoric on Leppa’s future, is that there is already the beginnings of suspicion over the Lions’ performances.

It was impossible to imagine a side playing as badly as they did against the Dockers, who before then where right in the race for the wooden spoon and No.1 draft pick.

But I digress, this wasn’t meant to be a column about tanking. It was about the Lions players.

If the performance tomorrow matches the one against Fremantle and Collingwood Leppitsch is finished. It will be just a matter of time.

Because Brisbane insiders say he is coaching better than ever. They insist the player unrest of last year is gone.

It has been a much happier more stable place this year. So far.

Certainly the chatter about the coach-player dynamic isn’t anywhere near like it was last year – although the cracks in the dam wall have started in the past couple of weeks.

Publicly the players are doing a superb job of presenting as a group united together and behind their coach. And on occasion they look like they are ready to die for the cause.

But in games against Collingwood, Carlton and Fremantle it was impossible to draw any conclusion other than they weren’t trying.

West Coast aren’t going that well. Their midfielders tend to run forward of the ball. Just like Brisbane’s. It works when Nic Naitanui and Scott Lycett play.

It won’t work with Jonathan Giles leading the ruck. Brisbane’s badly out of form midfield have a chance to have a major impact.

The Lions are far from favourites, but on the same hand the Eagles aren’t a lock.

It is a game, like last week, where the result is debatable.

But from Brisbane’s point of view, the effort and passion cannot be.

Or Leppitsch is finished.

Reading between the lines on Jenkins comment, he isnt coming here. Redpath at the bulldogs could play a similar mature body role, seeing the dogs might decide to play their million dollar a year player in the firsts and Crameri will be back next year...and Campbell seems to have found a role. Redpath would be a shite load cheaper too and has improved this year.

Don't mind this suggestion at all. He seems a real honest toiler too. Like the cut of his gib.

Is Redpath much different to Walker? Or our other key forwards?

Could he just be made to look good by the Bulldogs midfield and gameplan?

He has had to fight his way firstly onto the list and then to get a consistent game, no sense of entitlement. A few more like that could only benefit us, also shows a lot of key forwards dont hit their straps until at leasts mid 20's. Browny ruined us (fans) in a lot of ways dominating at such a young age.

More mature bigger body than any of our other keys. Playing good footy.

But why get another stop gap?
Why would he be a stop gap? Jenkins 4 yrs ago couldnt get a game now we are offering him long term contract for $700-$750k. As I said in other posts a lot of KPF dont hit their straps until mid 20's, but he could be forced out of WB starting line up when they get sick of more of their salary cap being in the 2's than the 1's.

So we pick him up on the assumption he'll improve and give him games ahead of Schache, Freeman, Hipwood, Close, Walker and Ballenden?

Well he is playing pretty good footy now, so "improve" means play at that level consistently, well that is likely to come in time. Of the guys you named some arent on our lists and some will play KPD. Freeman may take a lot of time, Close may play back and Schache plays up the field. SOOOO if you are against throwing big money at a guy like Jenkins, Redpath is a much cheaper option who plays a very different game to Schache (who I assume you would think is no1), where Jenkins actually covers a lot of ground too, like Schache will in time.

Hamilton has to be kidding himself with the tanking talk.

Secondly the result is basically a foregone conclusion according to bookies. We are a 13% chance of winning according to current odds.

THe biggest advantage Jenkins has is the he's actually quite a decent ruckman. He's also in almost all australian form while Redpath is questionably AFL quality.

Yes but Jenkins isnt coming in all probability.

Lambert on Instagram is always good for some positivity

lambose18 For all the doomsayers who continually doubt the @brisbanelionsdirection, please don't fall into the trap of thinking we have been in a rebuild for 10 years. For the first time in a while we are having players recommit without much success which means we are building the right sustainable foundation.#GiveUpOrKeepTheFaith #YourChoice
