A really good, balanced article by Andrew Stafford and The Age on the club as a whole...

Perhaps the biggest reinforcement of our situation is still our inability to fund a full time psychologist. If there was a team in greater need of help in being able to level itself out and build a mental resilience I don't know know it and yet here we are lacking something most other clubs just take for granted.

We still fight this fight with one hand tied behind our back...

Reading the whole article I actually thought it was quite positive. In a couple of years time the facilities will be built, our footy department spending will be up and the list will be far more settled.

Hopefully it'll mean that on the field we'll go from being by far the worst team that hasn't had half its list suspended and is completely uncompetitive 2 out of every 3 weeks to a team that can hold its own with most other teams and only gets thrashed occasionally.

Went on to the article and the first thing I saw was Justin Clarke still playing in his Lions jumper :(. Great now I've upset myself for Game Day.

There is an article about Justin in today Courier.online. It is on the subscription part. so it won't open for me.
It appears he is now bringing awareness to the issue of head injuries in sport.
Good on him for doing this.
I often think about him and wonder how he is doing.
Such a sad story. life is so random.

David King showed some good vision last night on The Couch which displayed how poor Rocky and Robbo were defensively. In hindsight i think it's harsh on Robbo considering the game he played. But the vision showed Luke Shuey breaking hard out of the centre when he could see the Eagles were going to win a contested ball and running deep into the forward 50 with Robbo and Rocky on both occasions 30-40 metres away back at the contest. I bet he could have found another dozen examples of our players not running hard enough in defensive transition. Leppa really needs to address this because it's what is causing so many easy goals.

Sounds like they addressed it after the Freo game. Unfortunately it seems to be getting worse for whatever reason.

I've started to wonder that even though he's been awful this season maybe losing Reddo has hurt our midfield more than we expected.

Robbo was on Priddis, dont know who was on Shuey but he had free reign.

The vision they showed Robbo was actually standing next to Shuey - perhaps Priddis was off at the time? The issue as i see it is - Rocky will never be a big defensive runner. It's not his strength. We need to find ways for him to maybe lock down better on an opponent when play stops for a bounce / throw in. But let's face it Sam Mitchell wouldn't chase his immediate opponent out of the centre and it has never caused the Hawks an issue. The defensive running looks worse probably because we have tried drumming into our players to push forward in numbers and try to be attacking. Sadly we make way too many skill errors and just leave the defence exposed.

Sigh. See the article yesterday about Lethal dragging Vossy aside and saying "You cannot lead. Let me teach you to be a leader."? I hope that this type of thing is happening now with our captain and coach. That Caro article from a month or so ago was a great look at how Rocky is learning on the job, he would get angry at players who didn't pull their socks up at training FFS. I believed for a long time that Rockliff was driving high standards and trying to fix our culture but small things like this have cropped up and now I am not so sure. Of course as outsiders we are making judgements seeing about 1% of what goes on, but little things like Rockliff standing at the back and looking dis-interested handing out Hipwod's jumper, this, and just the general factor that we still have work rate issues. Rockliff would have learnt from Brown in his early years about how to be a leader. And he does good things, like speaking to the crowd straight after the Freo game and being up front and not hiding anything I thought was the right thing to do. He should be the one publically driving all of this. Vossy used to make the team run laps after training if he thought they didn't give 100%. Vossy at his peak is a hell of a guy to be compared to but I really hope Rockliff is and is becoming a better leader!

Shuey got lose so often I am sure a few were standing him, but generally Robbo was on Priddis.

We get hit with the turnover while running forward, but we really got done with them getting players out the back from stoppages and it just happened time and time again, especially 2nd qtr. I just cant see a reason for that unless we just arent picking up guys running from behind ie nobody is taking responsibility.

Whilst I don't want to be overly critical of Rocky the vibe I got when he was coming through as a youngster was that he almost tried too hard to show he wanted to be a leader and captain. Just small things like when they used to run on he'd hang back and give everyone a pat on the backside etc before the game. I noticed he's stopped that now since he's become captain. It was almost like it seemed he was trying too hard to prove to everyone (coaches I assume) that he should be the next captain.

But then you'd see things on the field where his body language/incidents didn't look real good. The Staker incident for instance is something that comes to mind.

Maybe I'm reading it all wrong but I always got the vibe that Rocky just assumed he deserved to be leader and he wanted to make sure everyone saw him do those things so he stood out.

Not that that's necessarily a bad thing of course, some people are more driven to be in those roles but that's just how I read those things anyway.

Anyone considered that Rockliffes "body language" may just stem from the fact that he's not providing just as much as he is used to doing?

Interesting article from Juddy provide a balanced view in the media .... shock horror!!
http://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/afl...fix-no-1--sack-the-coach-20160616-gpkd40.html

That was interesting. There are no profound insights in there, but it's a reasoned view of things from someone with recent experience of the game. It's particularly interesting to me given Judd has been in really successful teams, middle of the road teams and teams that struggled badly. He's probably reasonably well qualified to have a view on what works.

The most important view i got from reading Judd's article was that you need to identify if everyone is on the same page and if ego's are getting in the way they need to be got rid off ASAP. I think that might have been a small dig at Malthouse and maybe he was also suggesting he could see when he was at the Eagles things weren't going to change with their issues off field so he took himself away from that problem.

You would like to think everyone at the Lions is on the same page but unless your at the club every day who can really know how things are playing out. One thing is for sure when your constantly losing it makes every issue become a discussion. When you are winning everyone is happy.

I would like the club to do an external review at seasons end. Get someone in from the business sector. Get someone like Parkin or Walls to be involved. We need to make sure we are on the right road. Because one thing is for sure when the season finishes we are most likely going to be bottom two and their needs to be answers and discussions.
