I'd say we're the only side in the comp that you could completely rule out having even a small chance of challenging in the next 4 years. Maybe Carlton aswell

We're obviously an outlier but just about any club could challenge for a premiership in four years time, and hardly any will.

When we finished last in 1998 nobody expected we'd play finals in 4 years time. Except we played finals in each of those 4 years, and won 2 premierships, and again in the 5th year.

I'm not saying that lightning will strike twice... but stranger sh** has happened. :drunk:

I think there's a decent argument that St Kilda should be in that bucket too.
I think St Kilda has a general spread of young players and experience that could get them there in 4 years time. The forward line has the right age profile and quality, same with the midfield (depends on how those kids develop obviously) and they have key backs that will still be there in Goddard and Carlisle.

4 years is a long time. 4 years into schache, andrews, mcstay, hipwood, keays, matheison, cutler etc. i say yes.
Its not impossible, I just think the midfield we'll need to be in a premiership window might be still too young at that point. Matheison, Keays, etc will still be in their early 20's and the senior players we have now will be past 30 and probably aren't quality enough.

Fair enough. I haven't watched a heap of them this year.

What I've seen of McCartin and Bruce hasn't been all that inspiring, and (to me) their younger midfielders don't look so encouraging. I am also skeptical about Carlisle in the longer term: he has ability but he's had some great defenders around him in his better years at Essendon. He doesn't seem the reliable anchor type to me.

Oh it's very very unlikely,it is St Kilda after all

I have watched a bit of them and while they do have some promising youth a substantial number of their main drivers at the moment will be gone within four years.

We've done it before..

..did anyone think we had the champs we ended up with, in 98,99/2000?

Time will tell..

After 9 Rounds in 2001, we were 4-5 and had suffered one almighty thumping at the hands of the Blues in Round 8, followed by a narrow loss to the Crows in Round 9.

In Round 10 we were facing the all-conquering Premiers, the Bombers. No-one (me included) thought we were any hope of rolling them. That was the famous "if it bleeds we can kill it" game.

Before that game, you would have been laughed at and been thought to be a delusional maniac if you had said the Lions were a chance for the Premiership that year, or anytime in the near future for that matter. We didn't lose another game that season and 15 or 16 weeks later, we were Premiers.

Anything is possible.

I think our fans are probably the most pessimistic right now and there are a few supporters of other clubs who might be getting ahead of themselves.

To walk a well worn path: things are never as good or as bad as they seem.

The start of 'the streak'. Great memories.
