Re: Umpires decide a Prelim: It's time for Gieschen to go, once and for all

My only qualm is that half the quarter was umpired with 'last quarter of a prelim, it's a free-for-all' mentality, and then at random intervals it just went back to normal 'call out a few cheap ones and 50's to maintain control' mentality.

The problem is that umpires consciously change the way they officiate games based on the way the match is going. Normally this goes quarter to quarter, but tonight it seemed every 5 minutes the umpires had changed their tunes.

Either that or it was match-fixing, but I'm more certain the Hawks were just the latest victims of a fluctuating and at times attention-seeking band of umpires. I would love to go back to an age where nobody new the umpires names...

Re: Hawthorn vs Collingwood + umpires

As a neutral the umpiring was woeful - the mere fact umps were finding free kicks that weren't their - the couple on davis spring to mind and ones that were their to be given were waved on - several in the back all night. 50s were fairly soft as well.

The rub went both ways but I could see a hawks supporter been filthy cause it looked a tad stiffer when the game was nearing conclusion, but at the end of the day too many of your players butchered the ball when it counted at the end.

The good teams stay in touch and the pies delivered enough when it counted - assuming Geelong gets up tomorrow not sure who is better to be playing.

Close finish aside I thought the game was scrappy for the most part not alot of form shown by any player for more than 5 mins... a few on both sides also seemed to be exposed for legs.

Re: Josh Gibson in the goalsquare for the Ball & Davis goals

I can categorically say I've never hated Collingwood, but I have hated Hawthorn for well over 30 years.

They were massively ****ed by the umps in that last quarter.

And that is why it was great to watch..... **** the maggots.

Re: Hawthorn vs Collingwood + umpires

Consistency is what drives supporters insane. If you you're going to be technical, call it both ways. A string of bad calls can have such an effect on a team that they second guess themselves to the point of dropping their bundle.

Giesh the luckiest bloke in footy to have a job.

Oh please.

So there are plenty of anti-Collingwood people from all manner of clubs. The fact that some choose to band together to express their disappointment at our courageous win does not prove some kind of 'universal truth'.

Fantastic effort by the Hawks but a great win by the Pies when all seemed lost.

Umpiring played no part in the result.

Mind you, the whining in this thread just makes the win all the sweeter, so carry on!

I'm far more anti Hawks than I am anti Pies. Far, far, far more! But they were categorically robbed by inconsistent, rubbish umpiring in the final quarter tonight.

Re: Hawthorn vs Collingwood + umpires

Pies were so fumbly due to both hawks pressure and the one week off, but simply hawks succumbed to the pressure when pies turned it on, of course they were more tired due to no breaks but pies also lifted a notch.

Wow best finals in a while, hopefully eagles win tomorrow.

This is allowed in the last quarter apparently.....

Re: Hawthorn vs Collingwood + umpires

alright just say the free kick stats for the LQ, 7-6 pies favor

yes i agree hawks didnt make the most of their opportunities

but how does a player get knocked out and pinned for holding the ball at the same time?

Re: Hawthorn vs Collingwood + umpires

For those blaming the umpires watch the replay tomorrow and see how many early calls hawks got that were dodgy too. It was about even atthe end, but hawks choking and umpires evening out the calls got them. Bottomline hawks mad monday a week early.

Re: Hawthorn vs Collingwood + umpires

Half the collingwood team were free riders. Then they pipe up, eg Davis after his goal. Buckley figjam everywhere makes me sick. Absolute shit result.

Re: Hawthorn vs Collingwood + umpires

dunno if it's just me but it seems that this year the standard of umpiring is at an all time low.

unfortunately for the hawks it played a major factor tonight. needs to be looked at urgently by the AFL.

the umpire who paid the puopulo HTB should definitely be investigated. such an obviously poor decision so heavily favouring one team at such a crucial time.

that, and a few other decisions ruined the spectacle.

very similar to the last derby, only that day they didn't succeed in getting their team over the line.

Re: Pies v Hawks holding the ball

That was definitely holding the ball, picked the ball up, gets tackled and made no attempt to dispose of it.

If he tried to handball or kick, it would have been a ball up.

The umpires played this type of free kick all throught out the year and tonight was no different. It was paid even a few times tonight . One was Leon Davis in the third quarte, when he took one step and did not attempt to dispose of the ball.

:eek: come on man, surely you have to agree the pies got a good deal in the last with umps, take your byist googles off and have a good look champ seriously

Re: Pies v Hawks holding the ball

I know I'm a Collingwood supporter, but Puopolo made no attempt to get rid of it. He just tried to hold the ball in to create a stoppage. I was sitting next to a Saints supporter who said the same thing. Are people going to complain about the non-decision against the Hawks player who should have been pinged for incorrect disposal five minutes earlier? It gave Hawthorn a free inside fifty.

Re: Hawthorn vs Collingwood + umpires

I don't reckon the pies had the best of the umpiring, but they got two crucial ones late on.

I reckon the Hodge one was the right call....just. You see some of them paid, others play on.

The holding the ball against Puopolo was a joke though.
Hawks were great, really feel for them, they were magnificent.

Actually thought they were going to pay too high for that one.
Agree fully with the post though.

Re: Hawthorn vs Collingwood + umpires

Collingwood fan logic:

People allege that something controversial has happened in a game involving Collingwood.

Options:

1. Controversial thing favoured opposition team: agree that thing was controversial and outrageous, and evidence that everyone who is not a Pies fan hates Collingwood as part of a grand conspiracy.

2. Controversial thing favoured Collingwood: claim that people raising issue are liars/fools and the fact that they are raising it is evidence that everyone who is not a Pies fan hates Collingwood as part of a grand conspiracy.

Simple rules to live by, apparently.

Re: Hawthorn vs Collingwood + umpires

I'm signing off on what was a terrible night for football.
