Roos stated on On The Couch tonight that he has no interest in coaching at Melbourne next year, and stated that he'd told Peter Jackson that, who asked him to let him know if anything changed. He didn't sound like he was talking shit, and what's the profit in lying?

Maybe so mate, but it seems like people in such positions frequently make statements of this kind and then change their mind afterwards.

Craig initially said he wouldn't step in as head coach if Neeld was let go, of course. So who knows what might happen.

Getting Choco or Eade would also be a great outcome though.

He said "at the moment he has no interest in coaching a club next year," followed by "I can't tell you what I'll be doing next year." Then said " as silly as it sounds Melbourne is an attractive club if you wanted to coach.

Actually, he said "I have no interest in coaching Melbourne next year."

Roos is in a no-win situation with the speculation at the moment. He's going to keep getting asked week in, week out about it. I wouldn't be surprised if he genuinely has no interest in coaching us next year, and doesn't end up doing so. I also wouldn't be surprised if he does want to coach us, but wants to keep playing a straight bat on the continuous questioning of him until the season is over.

He ain't going to come out now to the media and say that he's changed his mind. If anything happens, it'll happen at season's end.

At the moment

No, there was no "at the moment". He said "I have no interest".

And my point re where's the profit is because there's no encumbent here on whom Roos doesn't wish to tread. This job is open, and he's saying no interest. Why lie? There's no reason to that I can outwardly fathom.

But why? What's the point in "playing a straight bat"? The dees want him, afl wants him, the job is open... There's no reason to lie here.

If he wanted to wait until it was official, he could just say "we're having discussions". This no interest thing is pretty definitive.

Yeah, that's essentially what Craig said at the outset, before he took over as coach.

Different scenario. He's working at the club as an assistant, emotionally invested in the group, and the role as interim coach has been given him.

I just don't see why Roos would lie here. Hird, in the same chair, he was clearly lying.

Hell I might be wrong. I dunno. Interesting case study though.

He may well be giving his opinion as he sees it at the moment mate.

But it seems like people are subsequently persuaded to do otherwise in these situations all the time.

Ross Lyon being another example, of course, having originally said he wanted to stay with St Kilda.

I'm with Duritz. Let's just get over Roos and start moving forward. I personally believe we already have, hence the construction of the selection panel.

But Lyon was already coaching, left for better opportunity but more importantly more $$$.

Roos doesn't fit that bill. You can't judge his comments in the context of those other guys, he's not them and the situations are different.

I personally reckon I know what's going on. My theory is he wants Voss' job. Ex Lion who is in the Lions HOF and has stated he'd like to be involved down the track with Brisbane. Said in an interview in 2010 or 2011 "I always tell my boys I've got two clubs: the swans and the Brisbane lions."

Read his comments in that context, and they make more sense:

"At the moment, I've no interest in coaching, something would have to change"

I'm not sure we should pursue him, Voss is doing well enough when you analyse it, but that's my read on his comments.

I don't really know whether he should be strongly pursued or not either, although I don't think we've got anything to lose by chasing him after the season as well as the likes of Williams and Eade, and seeing what happens.

As Benwah83 says, if anything's going to happen with Roos, it'd happen at the end of the year.

Being a Fitzroy man, I'd love to have Roos with us for obvious reasons to do with that, of course :)

One way or another, I'd imagine he'd be very much a factor in the club's considerations at this point. And if we can put the same kind of offer to Roos as Freo put to Lyon, who knows what might happen. I'd reckon we'd be able to make such an offer. Whether we do or not and whether he could be persuaded, I don't know. I think it's still basically up in the air.

The only real reason why, that I can think of, is that it keeps the level of questioning that he receives from the media simply to "Have you changed your mind yet?". If he comes out and says he's having discussions, then the media cyclone will be back at category 5. Given he's in the media, he can't escape the level of questioning that will come with it. Some people don't like having all that play out in the public eye over an extended period of time. Roos strikes me as that sort of person.

FWIW I'm not at all convinced he's interested in coaching Melbourne. I think your theory re. Brisbane is a good one, and that may be where any future coaching aspirations of his may lie.

It won't be the end of the world if Roos isn't interested. Williams is a guy who can walk in there and say, "I know what it takes to win a premiership". That's the kind of authority our next coach needs to have. He would be top of my list if Roos is not interested. Eade is a good coach, but he can only say "I know what it takes to make a preliminary final"

Paul Roos will be coaching Melbourne next year. He has told the public he has received a phone call of Peter Jackson when I know Melbourne has made contact at least twice. With Craigy to coach the last 7 or so games it gives Roos enough time to finalize his panel and terms. Roos will be the highest paid coach in 2014,and I believe Craigy will be his senior assistant and Ling as midfield coach.
Lets see how it pans out!

Do you have some inside info?

I have heard that Roos has already acquired two junior coaches SHOULD he return to coaching next year. All I know is that they are swans premiership players. Whilst from what I hear he is no certainty to come to us that is where the smart money is and no other jobs are up yet. I have also heard Voss will be signed on. Roos may change that though.

I don't really think he's coming - but I do find it interesting that he always leaves the door ajar, and is starting to pay us some compliments.

I'd take it that he's considering it, however slightly.

Come on Duritz, that's just as insane as us microanalysing everything he says about coaching Melbourne.

Most of my wild theories get labelled insane. That doesn't mean they're wrong though.

Put it this way: say Vossy was sacked tomorrow, or resigned for personal reasons, or something... I'd be tipping Paul Roos would immediately become interested in the job.
