If we can't get Clarkson I'd like Craig to stay on. Absolutely not interested in Paul Roos even though I'm certain he's the AFL's preferred candidate and probably the one we'll get lumped with.

Why so against him? Genuinely interested.

The people around me who I know of, that really don't want Roos at the helm, are telling me that the reason they don't want him is because he seems completely disinterested in coaching the side. The people I know, do not want him to coach if his heart isn't in it. If he's only doing it for the money, then they'd rather not have him.

I, on the other hand, believe this entire thing to be a ruse on Roos' part. He won't speak until the end of the year, he wants to remain as low-key as possibile, imo. When the end of the year comes, he will either say YES, or NO. Definitively.

I don't see why the club has made Roos their outright favourite guy to get, they haven't even properly talked to him yet, the club wouldn't know what Roos' strategy would be with the list and how he's going to take us forward. So it's up to Roos to say yes or no? If he wants it he's got it? Without knowing what his plan is?

Roos is a very defensive minded coach, similar to Neeld, I personally don't think our players are capable of playing that type of footy. I think Williams or Craig would be better suited to the list we have.

As said earlier in the thread, is Roos the man to take our list on at this stage in their development?

It's impossible to say whether Roos will be a successful coach at Melbourne. But to suggest he's purely 'defensive minded', and to infer he's inflexible as a coach, is in my opinion, absolutely ludicrous. The guy has a better understanding of the game, and how to best utilize a list, than most.

The flip side to that is that Roos built the defensive game plan because of the list he had and the ground he played at. The SCG was much easier to bottle up and create more stoppages at due to less spread. I don't see Roos as the kind of guy to do something half arsed.

And the midfielders he had were never quick , obviously it was the perfect plan for what we had, if we can see that our list isn't suited to a contested style then surely Paul Roos can

Yeah it's not giving him much credit if we all assume he will trot out the same gameplan that won the 2005 premiership. I'm sure he's capable of moving on to a new style. And he could boost our defensive skills too. I'm not to fussed who we get now - Craig, Williams, Eade, Roos. It's almost an embarrassment of riches for a club like ours (think about who were were choosing from the last two times). Amazing what we had to go through to be choosing from guys of this calibre. Finally!

He may well be flexible but he's outright favourite and talked of spending $1million to lure him because of his track record at Sydney, lets at least talk to him first to see what his ideas are to take us forward.

Surely they're doing that? I don't think PJ would have it any other way.

If Leigh Matthews was consulted by Jackson then we may well be following his suggestion to headhunt rather than interview much like Collingwood did when they landed Malthouse and more recently Freo with Lyon (were Blight or Matthews determined by an interview process when they were hired by Adelaide and Brisbane respectively?). Of course there is some form of "interview process" in speaking to Roos particularly with regard to where he stands, we'd hardly be sending him an email offering $1.1mil or whatever to coach, please reply yes or no.

Panel has been named. Disappointed we couldn't get Seal from The Voice.

I was a Fitzroy supporter (still a VAFA membership holder) who grew up idolising Roos the player, even after he went to Sydney (a move I fully supported). However, I will also admit that due to comments he's made in the media, in particular last year regarding Lindsey Thomas (after the accident when Rowan's leg was broken) I've lost quite a bit of respect for him and feel his heart is still at the Swans (spending time with Gerard Healy can't have helped).

Ultimately, there are a few reasons why I would prefer we don't go with Roos (even though I realise that the AFL has almost certainly decreed we have to). Chief among them is that is that I've never seen anything in his coaching career that indicated Roos is worth the $1million+ that we'll have to spend every year on his salary. He didn't inherit a list that was on the way down (like Craig did) or that needed to be rebuilt (like Clarkson did); he inherited a team full of character and discipline (he was part of building that culture but not the instigator) including a few genuinely great players; Roos transitioned from playing with the team to coaching them, he hasn't shown that he can walk in cold and build relationships with a diverse playing group, supporter group and administration. Clarkson and Craig have both shown they can do that.

At the end of the day I think Paul Roos might well be a good coach but I don't believe for a minute that he's the saviour so many people seem to believe. He is AFL endorsed (soon to be AFL bought), neat and clean and corporate-friendly. That's what the AFL say we need so that's what we'll most likely get, whether he's genuinely the best man for the job or not.

My preference is for Neil Craig to stay on (only Clarkson if the AFL insists we get in someone new). I think he's got all of the qualities we need plus, given the current landscape in regards to sports science, he's the most qualified person in the AFL and would be an asset for us above and beyond his position as coach.

Only person on the panel who has been a senior coach or player this millenia is Josh Mahoney.

Cheers for the reply. Some interesting points. I'm of the opinion that just because Melbourne is a different gig to what Sydney was, it doesn't mean Roos doesn't have it in him to prove himself in a new enviroment, and with a different challenge ahead. No guarantees, but the guy has a great understanding of the game, and also knows how to develop youth. Furthermore, he comes with a aura of respect, which is something our playing group has needed in a coach for a while now. I highly doubt there will be any questioning of Roos in the short or long term, or any form of rebellion amongst the players (I think Neeld weeded out most of the crap mind you).

FWIW I'd also be quite content if we stuck with Craig. He seems to have the qualities we need in a coach at this point in time. Roos is pretty much on his way though.
