Not sure if its official yet but yep that's what i have heard as well. Im pretty much certain they are interested and have asked him to train with them. I think they are looking at him becoming one of their Northern Territory recruits. Saying that nothing is official and I think they want to have a proper look at him before they commit to anything.

Has signed.

Athletic player who needs to improve his skills and decision making to be AFL standard.

Hasnt noticeably improved in these areas the past couple of years

Hey NT bomber be happy for the kid .Hes worked his butt off to get where he is .Surname didnt get him his shot nor any other attribute apart from a good work ethic ,hard work and commitment over many years. You are entitled to your opinion but fortunately I can correct you.I have been closely monitoring his development over the years as well as you and along with his club and Thunder coaches am really happy with his development . This view is shared by many including obviously the highly respected people at the Gold Coast who have him on their radar.Stop being so negative and be happy for an NT boy!!!!!!!

IDIB, what Nt Bomber said is correct on many levels. AFL once was drafting athletes and has now also moved towards players with high levels of foot skills and decision making.

With the rolling zone and possession football being the current flavour of the month, these two skills are highly important. If you read his post, he said he needs to improve those attributes, but he has noticeably improved those areas over the last couple of years, if he keeps going down this path, then the AFL beckons.

Tarquin you make some very good points. However if you read carefully the comment is "hasnt" made any progress, an erroneous assessment of young Michaels development which needed correcting .In my humble opinion.

I have also been following Michael since his selection to the AIS and imho to say he hasn’t developed over the last 2 years is unfair and inaccurate.

He has gotten bigger and stronger and whilst he has always been quick and mobile for his height, he has also improved his endurance to the point that he was one of the best performers in the endurance testing at Draft Camp. In the past two years he has been developed through his involvement in the AIS program and the NTIS program.

He has been also been a consistent performer amongst men at NTFL level. His hands have improved to the point he is now a very solid mark and Jason McCartney commented on the AFL site that his courage has greatly improved, noting he took several big marks at the Nationals running back with the flight of the ball despite knowing he would get hit. The thing which reportedly hurt him in the Draft was a lack of football in the lead up to the draft, with him being in the NT as opposed to the SANFL or TAC Cup.

His decision making as to whether to mark or punch the ball in defence has improved immensely and he has always had good hands at ground level for a 196cm player.

As Tarquin says, NT Bomber is correct when saying that his skills need to improve if he wants to become a good AFL player but imho this statement can be made of just about any 18 year old draftee.

It is unfair to criticize Michael’s skills when many in the know such as McCartney have rated Michael very highly for his skills for his height which allow him not only to play a traditional key position but also allow him to play on the wing or in the midfield where his height will cause mismatches, along with his endurance which would allow him to play a Richo-type role.

I know South Adelaide were very excited to be getting Michael who was touted to be an impact player at SANFL at the age of 18 and from what I hear, the Gold Coast are getting a heck of a talent with their first non-Qld pick.

This could be good for him because if has Tons of Potential and in 2 years he could get to a very good Standerd

Are you his brother?

I wish Michael all the best but he was All Australian at Under 16 level on an AIS scholarship and was also down training with Collingwood pre draft.

He is also a great size and has the athleticism that most clubs want yet no club was willing to give him an opportunity even on their rookie lists.

Yeah it does seem a bit strange that he has had plenty of chances: AIS Scholarship holder, trained with Essendon + Collingwood, yet still no club wanted to rookie him. Seems to lack a bit of skill under pressure but no doubt has great athleticism.

With that said, from what I have heard from people close to him, he has worked very hard to get his chance at this level and it's always great to see a guy from the Northern Territory get drafted. Definately hope he makes the most of his chances.
