Ratts couldn’t even dream of a run like this.

Facing massive challenges against top teams and winning the close ones.

Literally every close one this year.

The 2008-2013 team was BOG average with a sprinkling of guns carrying the rest.

This team is a solidified unit.
This side is just better, far more even spread of talent. More depth in the middle, way better defence, key forwards. Only thing the 2011 era side had over this one was better small/medium forwards.

Still some things to learn here with our coach.

Voss is all about big bodies and contested ball and this is his achilles heel.

His views on team and the game need to become more balanced.

Teams who have moved away from big slow bodies and embraced speed and high intensity and high effort players are the ones who have excelled.

We were a better team with Dow and Fisher out there than what teams we put forward in finals.

I don't get how we did so well reverting to a faster and more outside team in the second half of the season and then reverted back to a slower, heavier and less mobile team come finals.

Collingwood, GWS and Brisbane went into finals with fast teams who are really good on the outside and did really well that way. We again went the other way.

losing Dow and Fisher could be the difference between us being an also ran or a premiership side. It's that close, what decisions we make now will determine which way we go. Just feel we are going to get it wrong. Maybe that is me being pessimistic after over two decades of getting it wrong.

Thing is we should have picked a backline with 3 rebounding defenders and Kept Dow in the side for finals. We were lucky to win our first two finals. I reckon we would have beaten Melbourne and Sydney comfortably and would have been more 50/50 against the Lions if we chose the side correctly.

If Voss keeps us big and slow we won't go anywhere.

They got the finals team wrong. Brisbane showed us the level of run and carry you need and that you need those quick little blokes in the middle.

You have to be able to run with the ball in modern football. If you can't you can't beat the zone and that's how ugly slow forward killing ball movement is created and we created that with our crap team selections this finals series. We wasted or forwards big time.

Voss still hasn't learnt, hope this loss changes things.

The irony of your constant criticism of Voss for picking “heavy” contested sides is that we lost last night in no small part due to us losing the contest after quarter time. Also it is notable that Collingwood beat GWS at the contest and after they won on Friday McRae even reflected on how vital all the training they do on contested body work was in them looking the ball in for 5+ minutes at the end of their game. Contested footy is what finals footy is all about so I’m happy if this is a major focus of Voss.

A coach that was able to get an inside turnaround like that is rare. It wasn't like we made the finals last year and started bad. There was nothing to fall back on when it got tough, ie no previous form to look to. This has been a remarkable turnaround for not only Voss but the fact the players had to accept their roles and get through the adversity. The fact that Voss was able to do that speaks wonders.

Humble, courageous and a leader.

My two cents,

Voss coached the first term perfectly and then went zone defence in the second and third terms. This gave Brisbane space to sue the ball and get back into the game. I think he will have learnt a lot from that as in the forth went back to a much more contested game.

You can't be serious, wow. That's just crazy.

Thanks Paddy's player agent. Gotta drum up his trade and contract anyway you can, I guess.

Great season for the blues and very happy with the turnaround.

Voss held his nerve and we now understand the benchmark for success which sets us up nicely for 2024.

Voss needs to make a choice on whether he shoe horns this side into the best stoppage team in history and wins a grand final or whether he drops some stoppage power for turnover goals. I'm personally of the opinion that he trained the turnover game pre-season and that is what held us up until he dropped it after the bombers game. That and the players turning their intensity up a notch after facing the vitriol post Bombers game.

Given our personnel, I'm not sure which way he should go, stoppage full tilt or change and go for balance.

What I would personally like Voss to do is stop playing someone like a slow Cripps half fit/injured. Just let Kennedy/Dow who were fully fit play all the lead up games and the finals. The " I'll play at all costs even if im dead" is comical. Voss needs to stand up and say no to Cripps who will push to play. Let's improve our professionalism.

For the team view, i think the only thing I'm hoping on is that TDK is strong enough to play ruck with support from JSoS/Mckay next year. It is clear we need another runner at the very least. Pitto just doesnt do enough to warrant playing a second ruck at the pointy end of the season. Home and away, maybe to ensure TDK is fit come finals.

It was obvious that we absolutely got every ounce of luck and dream run in that first quarter. Played out of skin and lions were caught napping and they were playing like a team that was feeling the pressure of our intensity and the outside noise of them falling short again. Lions played better, have a better spread of players. By no means was this lost in the coaching box.

With the disparity in I50 in the first quarter it wasn't luck or a dream run that got us to the 4 goal lead. We out played them.

When the Lions stepped up we couldn't go with them especially around stoppages which is supposed to be our 1 wood.

Lions are a 4-5 goal better side up there so no disgrace. Highly probable they still would have won as I think the cue was in the rack half way through the last.

We have had the most dramatic turnaround in history, reaching the preliminary final from the lowest position on the ladder ever!

Voss (and the rest of the team) did this under the most intense scrutiny of any side this season.

The evidence that he is able to direct the team and display the necessary determination, belief and confidence in those circumstances proves he has the ability and tools to succeed.

That’s not to say that the club can rest on its laurels as all the pieces are not present but it’s a great foundation!

A great year for Voss, despite the criticism directed his way before mid season

Will need to add layers to our style, but confident he will continue to improve our output considering the maturity of our list
Last year they learnt what it takes to make the 8. This year they learnt what it takes to make a GF. We are in a good space and with the tweaks you mention, its all very positive.

Agree. Literally no one pulls this off. Mikael Arteta at Arsenal looked gone twice and survived and now look what he's achieving. Different sport I know but still team sport management.

Surround him with cool tactical heads and who knows what will happen, but I imagine big things.

He achieved something most of our recent coaches couldn't, which is a total playing group buy-in. Despite the heavy run of losses.
