Oh rape is horrific, but I think you seriously overlook the impact and trauma of racism, casual or otherwise…and what’s more it’s not something that is perpetuated by only one person and stops at a certain age.I believe it is you who has not thought it through.
Yes trauma is not the same across separate instances. Using your own example of sexual assault, rape is a far greater trauma than being called a name that hurts your feelings.
Being told you can’t come inside the house of a school friend when you’re 9yrs old because of what color you are.
Being hated at school and called a “dirty boong” or “lazy abo” by the children of bigots who think that’s ok to racially vilify someone on the back of what they hear at home.
Being picked up by police when they see you walking down the street with a friend on the weekend, telling you they’ll drop you home, only to have them take you out to the bush and drive through every pothole they can find before dropping you back into town.
Being followed around every second shop you enter and asked constantly what it is you’re looking for while other people are free to browse
Being told by your auntie’s and uncles not to hook up with or go out with any other Koori, because they could well be you cousin(due to not knowing where half your family is after the stolen generation).
Being constantly reminded that your not equal, that your not treated equal and that you never will be treated equal.
These are just some examples I can name, and I could go on.
Making out like racism in this country is just “taking offense to some words” is basically nonsense, both survivors of sexual assault and those who’ve experienced a life of racism carry trauma that is no joke to them.
