Review Mid Season 2024

So we've reached the bye and I thought it would be a worthwhile opportunity to take a look back at what has transpired so far and a look forward at what may unfold in the remainder of the season.

So with that in mind here are some discussion topics

Most Disappointing Aspect:

For me it's clearly the unfortunate injury crisis that derailed our season just as it was getting started and is only now starting to subside although we're going to be feeling the effect into the 2025 season with ACL injuries to Clarke Young & Lefau likely to see them having delayed starts to the season, while Gibcus could be back to start the 2025 season all things going well.

Most Positive Aspect:
From crisis comes opportunity and the injuries have certainly provided plenty of them, and a number of players have stepped up to answer the call. Miller Brown Dow Campbell Ralphsmith Maurice Mansell & McAuliffe have all shown something to suggest they are worth persisting with heading into 2025. There are a few more fringe types that are in the undecided basket but have a good chance to secure their futures if they're good enough.

Best Performed Players:
Nankervis & D.Rioli have probably been our 2 best across the whole season, while Vlastuin started the season strongly he has dropped away a little the last couple of weeks. Of the younger players, I've been pleased with the seasons of Dow Brown Ralphsmith & Campbell in particular. Dow has been asked to step into a role he wasn't intended to play heading into the season and has done the best he could with little senior support around him over the last 8 weeks. Campbell started well, had a quiet patch, but has become consistent enough to hold his spot and will benefit from it moving forward. Brown got an opportunity in the back line due to the injury crisis and has improved week to week and is close to a lock in the back half. Ralphsmith was odds on to be delisted in the eyes of many heading into this season, but has played well enough to have laid claim to a spot on the wing for the remainder of the year and likely another couple of seasons at least. Probably the most pleasing player this year has been Miller down back, sure he had a poor one on the weekend, but his season has been a pleasant surprise and earned the extension he got.

Most Disappointing Players:
Personally I'm not disappointed in any of our players, none of them set out to have poor seasons but unfortunately circumstances don't always allow players to be at their best at all times. It could be easy to get stuck into the likes of Grimes Prestia Hopper and the like who have had injuries interrupt their seasons, but as I said nobody sets out to have poor seasons.

Looking Forward:
With the injury crisis starting to ease we should get a better look at the team and game plan that Yze wants to play with heading into 2025. For me I want to see a more contested style in the midfield, better defensive structure and more cohesion up forward to show that all the work that we've been doing on the training track is actually sinking in. I believe that we will end up with a top 5 pick come seasons end, most likely to be 2 or 3, depending on how long it takes for us to get up and running once we get all the players back on the park.

Possible List Changes:
Retire: Grimes Prestia Martin Naismith
Free Agency: Graham McIntosh
Trade: Baker Bolton Riolis
Delist: Coulthard Green Cumberland

Draft night will be more exciting than any game this year.
Especially if the AFL force us to take all 9 picks. 9 jets incoming

Exactly what it says. The season has been destroyed by injuries, so no point in potting players who have had poor seasons for reasons beyond their control. It would be different without the injury crisis and senior players were playing poorly. as far as the younger players are concerned, I'm not one to pot kids trying to find their way in the game.

Negative
- How shit and poor our youth is compared to other clubs - which is fair because we haven't had the best draft picks due to success.

- Our role players who received all praise during dynasty have shown what passengers they are, not all, but Short, Graham, Kmac, etc ew.

- Yze's insistence on using a gameplan that doesn't have the cattle.

- Constant injuries especially to Lynch who costs 20% of our salary cap.

Positive
- The two wins

- Seth Cambell

- Hugo on the wing (I felt gross typing that but it's true)

- Dusty's 300th and maybe bringing some passion back into our club.

I am. Dow and Cumberland were given golden opportunity and failed. There’s two for starters.

Let’s call a spade a spade yeah.

Add Short. ****ing being useless the campaigner. When we needed him to step up he couldn’t pull up his big boy pants.

100%

Dow with the most centre bounce attendances is honestly our biggest handicap atm. Put a cat in his position and it's running pattern and unpredictability might open up the ground for our midfielders. Better than the 'Dow dump kick'

Good job, RT. :thumbsu:

Dunno if you're getting truly excellent at this review caper, I'm mellowing with age, or it's just a pretty black and white season to date, but I really can't find anything at all to disagree with. :D

Looking forward to the rest of the season, we're seeing plenty of future puzzle pieces on display, that's always interesting and rewarding (was all we had back in the day! ;)), plus there's clearly no lack of spirit within the group. :thumbsu:

Better read than the back page of the age…

… until I saw Martin in retire bucket! Wash your mouth out and hands off the GOAT!!!

The silver lining to our injury situation hss been the emergence of Ralphsmith, Lefau, Campbell and Brown, who have all established themselves as best 22.

Given our unwavering reliance and blind faith in agening and declining veterans, had injuries not hit, only Campbell would have likely been given significant playing time.

Like what you have said.

The thing I don't like is that we are not connected as a team. Or more to the point our positioning and ability to keep structure is often a problem. When that improves we will improve dramatically. But that might be because of a new coach and inconsistent and incoherent team due to injuries.

Ii know people are passionate, but hammering a young guy who is not supposed to be an first choice inside mid (Dow) for not being an top end inside mid seem silly. Our younger KPFs have been not great, apart from Lefau. But there is the truism that good KPFs go first round.

I reckon that we have the core of a good team out there now. A few good draft picks and some nice trades/FAs and we're back baby. .. Of course with a good injury run.

But right now I see as having a lot of 'if's' for the future. If we don't get more high end mid talent and a really good KPF we will struggle to contend for a long while. If we can't learn how to play the game plan we'll get into a downward spiral (but then see what's happened to the Hawks). And we just need for talent in the list. That is drafting and development - so a lot of ifs going forward.

Collectively, we need to temper looking at our Team through Three GF rose-tinted glasses...
Take a chill pill...we are not the Dynasty Team any more...even the GOAT has seen better days...
Relax and stop bagging out the players' cos they are not playing like Brownlow medallists...
We are second last on the AFL Ladder cos collectively that's where we as a Club deserve to be...
We need time to sort out the playing List!
Lots of time!
Even the Club, Gale and et al. are struggling... once these issues are resolved...we can go back to moulding the List!
Currently and collectively we are in a mess...ya canna build strongly from a messy foundation!
Let's just focus on development of the younger players and look forward to the Draft!

They are possible list changes and IMO I believe Martin may very well call it a day come seasons end, especially if it looks like being a while before we're a contender again. Hopefully he feels like he has plenty to offer still and becomes our second longest serving player and only the 2nd Tiger to make it to 350. Reckon we get 100k if that happens.
