Player Watch Mid-Season Pick #13 (2021) - Jed McEntee

I've watched Jed closely but still can't figure out the value he brings. I've heard claims his role is as a defensive forward. But he's not that fast and not that strong. SPP is more effective in that role plus he kicks goals.

Handpicked by Hinkley for reasons that escape me.

I doubt any other AFL club would pick him.
Another that was plucked from midfield at SANFL level to then being played out of position as a small forward. May as well have just kept Sam Gray.

Sam Gray was getting long in the tooth, so we needed to go get another new shiny undersized bloke too good for sanfl not good enough for afl.

It's for some reason under the 'requirements' to build our list for a decade.

interesting observations from him but i think he is pretty fast and is strong for his size. I think his weaknesses are more his disposal, decision making and overall football brain.

Laughed my nuts off watching the game! McEntee was IMO the most consistent player on ground. He has running, tackling, marking, tackling, scoring, tacking, passing, and tackling! Kicked a few goals, but should have kicked four or five. Does not do the sexy stuff that Rioli does, but damn, he stays involved!

He will start in the 22 to take on Freo next week after that effort.

Ps .. This thread is going to spontaneously combust!

I couldn’t fault him yesterday. Hope he can continue like that. Our tall forwards, without Marshall and Georgiades were a mess, so we need our small forwards to be very sharp.

Jed was OK last night.
He was pretty active but had some skill errors as well.
On that performance and that performance alone, he is playing better than last year.

I will say he did an absolute huge tackle I think in the 2nd quarter in the pocket and wasn't rewarded but it was an absolute cracker.
Jed was best last year when he led the inside 50 tackle count not for the team but for the competition.

Early days but yet another whipping boy with the potential to prove BF wrong?

Agree on his current form he deserves to start against Freo. Has improved but his lack of height is an issue.

I liked some of his crumbing work yesterday. Should have finished better in front of goal and needs to keep working hard on that but looks to have improved and should be around the best 22 again this year.

Rozee aside I thought McEntee and another often maligned bloke in Mead were close to the hardest working Port players on the field last night.

McEntee appeared to have been given a licence to roam as opposed to previous seasons where he would stay in or close to the forward 50, as he continually ran hard between the two arcs got a number of contested possessions and used the ball well on most occasions.

There was a time in the first half when he was working so hard up and down the grandstand wing I thought he may have been playing in that role, but regardless of what his actual position was, last night was easily the best performance I have seen from him and if he can make that the norm he is definitely best 22.

For 4 maybe 5 games at the start of the year he warranted his place in the side without locking himself in, but they kept playing him as the returns became noticeably less and less. Halfway through the year they needed to start giving some others a run since they couldn't do any less than McEntee was doing; great chance to expose some guys to AFL, such as Jackson. If he can at least recapture that early form then I don't mind if he plays but unless he also improves on it I am really hoping someone better supersedes him before long.

McEntee - meh. What you say may be true (btw, I watched 25 minutes of the match in total on tv, and he got 3 possessions without doing anything much with them), as I've stated before, he came to us as a small inside mid, not a goalkicking forward, so giving more license to roam may see an improvement.
