Player Watch Mid-Season Pick #13 (2021) - Jed McEntee

So lets cut the rug, I will ask all of the posters, put your money where you mouth is, do you think Jed is a good AFL player?
Very open question and dependent on how people view “good” in the question. If he makes our first choice 22, then he must be good at what he is being asked to do. Then he is a good AFL player. If you compare him to other, he is in our bottom three or four. Are there better than him in the AFL? Lots, but we can’t have the all Australian team to ourselves. Still young in AFL terms.

If we look at afl attributes, there's probably skill and physical. Pace, decision making, kicking, marking, handballing, reading the play, height, strength, leap, ambidextrous, accuracy, creativity, endeavour. Jed has endeavour and accuracy over short distance. Imo that's it. Nothing personal. Might be a nice kid and tries hard. He should not be on our list.

Still crickets.
The idea of pressuring the ball carrier is too abstract for you. If its not on the stat sheet you don't see it. Theres no point in anyone arguing with you.

Maybe instead you can explain what you saw in Sam Hayes and why he is now playing for the Winnie Blues?

To humour you, I think Jed's best games have been those of a good AFL player, albeit they have been few and far between. I personally think he is still young and inexperienced enough that we can see improvement in his game and a bridging of the gap between his best and worst football - but I get that confirmation bias means people don't want to hear that a short guy taken in the mid season draft is a possibility of improving.

I reckon we saw his ceiling in a few games in the early part of 23. Small forward roles by their nature are highly inconsistent. You need a small forward to be turning in occasional match winning performances to justify the quiet weeks, not just passable contributions.

How many small forwards in the entire league are capable of turning in match winning performances?

I had a quick look over the recent posts just in case I was overly harsh or derogatory towards other posters and all I have found is cogent criticism, analysis and my own opinion on the subject matter. On the whole, respectful but with a bit of emotion and not attacking other posters and telling them what to do.

All I am doing is having a chat here. I have stated an opinion that pretty much everyone agrees with but there are posters who don't like hearing it. Everyone gets a say on here and if you disagree with another poster, its OK.

The idea I am trying to bait people to humiliate them is absurd. I have a strong opinion on Jed and I opened the floor for posters to convince me otherwise.

All I can say is good luck to Jed in 2024. I hope he has a great season.

With the Grandstand article basically confirming that a midfielder (JHF, Butters, Wines, Rozee) will rest up forward, how can the team carry both DBJ and McEntee?

the other small forward will be Rioli, with SPP being a non-key position forward. 3 of Dixon, Marshall, MG, Finlayson and Lord with by the tall forwards

So, by my reckoning, DBJ or McEntee may be in trouble - either limited minutes or no minutes.

Jedd best is borderline. He played some good games last year. Sadly his last 6-7 were no good. Hopefully he can take another leap forward this year

Maybe Jed will leave a bit of mary jane in Willie's room just to see what happens

Charlie Cameron, Toby Greene, Tom Papley, Kosiah Pickett, Cody Weightman, Bobby Hill, Jamie Elliot, Tyson Stengle, Isaac Rankine, Josh Rachelle, Shai Bolton, Willie Rioli, Lachie Schulz...

Less than 1 per club. Leaves plenty of room for role playing smalls who aren't going to win you a match but will play what is a difficult role with minimal fuss.

Is Jed a good AFL player?
No.

He isnt by any measure in the top half of afl footballers going around

Does he niche role block the development of others who can grow
Absolutely

Does he good moments make up for his weaknesses
No
You can apply this logic to half the AFL players going around. Sack them all!!!!!!

Great list.

You have the cream of the crop small forwards who always kick bags but you want a small forward to kick a bag once in a while.

I had a quick look and it is subjective but here we go.

Charlie Cameron
Toby Greene
Shai Bolton
Tom Papley
Kysaiah Pickett
Isaac Heeney
Cody Weightman
Lachie Schulz
Luke Bruest
Bobby Hill
Tyson Stengle
Izak Rankine
Zac Bailey
Josh Rachelle
Dan Butler
Sam Powell-Pepper
Gryan Miers
Jamie Elliot
Dustin Martin
Willie Rioli
Lincoln McCarthy
Brent Daniels
Jack Higgins
Liam Ryan
Jade Gresham
Jesse Motlop
Jack Ginnivan
Michael Walters
Nick Watson - a big fan
Zane Duursma
Lance Collard - a huge fan of this kid

Maybe wait until they have actually played 1 AFL game prior to being put alongside the other names.

I've watched Jed closely but still can't figure out the value he brings. I've heard claims his role is as a defensive forward. But he's not that fast and not that strong. SPP is more effective in that role plus he kicks goals.

Handpicked by Hinkley for reasons that escape me.

I doubt any other AFL club would pick him.

Jesus christ give me strength you literally cant.

You can on point 1 sure

Players though often have a thing called potential, where they show signs of greater things, even if they aren't currently in the top half. You can tell that they are forecasting to get there. Jed doesnt have that at all.

Then you have players where
They aren't in the top half of players in the league
Will never get there
But they have an attribute or unique skillset that means on gameday they can have a few moments that will make up for that and the juice is worth the squeeze

Jed doesnt have that either
