Player Watch Mid-Season Pick #13 (2021) - Jed McEntee

I think with the emergence of Mead this preseason and SPP out for a month early, JHF, Rozee and Butters will rotate forward of the footy more and upon SPP's return one of Jed or DBJ must make way. Jed has been sh!t hot to start the year and for all his knock and detractors, myself included, you couldn't have possibly asked for more from a Half Forward. DBJ in the gun, maybe the bloke they should have been trialing on the Wing throughout preseason?

To all the new Jed Heads ...

McEntee - meh. What you say may be true (btw, I watched 25 minutes of the match in total on tv, and he got 3 possessions without doing anything much with them), as I've stated before, he came to us as a small inside mid, not a goalkicking forward, so giving more license to roam may see an improvement.
Wouldn't it make sense to actually watch the whole game before passing judgement?

I haven't been his fan either but he hasn't put a foot wrong this pre-season.

If he brings that every week then no worries at all, was very happy with that game last night. It's when he was constantly picked after weeks of absolute dross whereas Evans (who unfortunately had a stinker last night) was dropped after 4 and 3 goal games. That's when he was copping the hate from everyone.

the club keep saying he’s in the team because he does the team things which go unnoticed. I would love someone to explain to me what he actually does which is so special?

The last afl game he played, I remember Lachie Whitfield running off him at will.

M8, not too many players in the league Whitfield isn't running off.

If a player is in the side purely for his defensive pressure, this isn't an excuse. If he's got a spot in the side as a defensive specialist, to justify that spot he needs to be one of the few players in the league Whitfield can't run off.

This is the whole problem with McEntee and the thing that his defenders miss. It's 2024. People understand the concept of a defensive pressure forward, and playing your role, and that not every forward needs to kick a bag to have a good game. You're not being clever by parroting these talking points. The issue with McEntee is that even putting aside his total lack of being an offensive threat, he isn't even particularly good at playing his role.

His tackle numbers are okay but they're not elite, he's behind both SPP and DBJ. His defensive pressure numbers are okay but they're not elite, he's behind both SPP and DBJ. He doesn't shut down the opposition's best rebounder (see for example Lachie Whitfield).

He is not an elite pressure forward. He's just decent at it. And somebody as ineffectiual as he is offensively needs to be elite defensively to justify a place in the team, not just decent defensively.

Thats such a long winded way to tell the world you don't understand footyball.

The fatal assumption all of the people who are wrong about Jed make is that a player who at the end of last season was aged 22 with 32 games to his name is incapable of improving as any other player of that age/experience profile would be expected to. Presumably this assumption is made because he's short and/or because he was a mid season draft pick.

Jed has shown in his best games that he can be a good AFL player. Close the gap between the good games and the bad games and he's best 23 every day of the week. His pre season form was promising and he's going to prove quite a few people wrong this year.

This is exactly what the biggest Jedhead would say... I agree!!

Tredders said on AA that now that he has been briefed by the club on his role and what he does off of the ball he has changed his tune on McEntee.

I am still skeptical but that combined with his improved pre-season showing is enough for me for now.

I've noticed a few similarities with McEntee and Brent Daniels from the Giants. They play a similar game / role.

Although Daniels has now begun to add more goal kicking to his repertoire, and now looks like a genuinely capable small forward

Here's hoping Jed can do the same as his game progresses

lol, that literally makes no sense. As if he needs to be briefed by the club, in what Jed brings to the team. Maybe share the briefing with me, I’d like to know.

Presumably the briefing was 'hey Tredders you're on the board now, time to get positive in the media'. A board member is hardly gonna come out and say a player's a spud and should be dropped, is he?

Much like all the players coming out in 2022 and saying they back in Kenny, the fact that he felt the need to say anything at all is telling. You wouldn't hear anything like that said about a good player. Tredders never felt the need to come out in the media to defend Zac Butters or Dan Houston's spot in the side.

It wasn't a briefing about Jed.

it was a briefing about the footy department plans for 2024 including game plan, of which Jed's role is part.

In other words, believe the opposite.
