Just waiting for the twenty 20 cricket to start - I thought I would do my own mid year report card of our side..

1 - PRIMUS
For me he has been very disappointing. Granted he has come off two serious knee injuries. I do not doubt his leadership but I really have concerns of his future. So far this season his ruckwork has been non existant. He cannot jump and when in the middle seems to get jumped all over. SHowed a glimpse up forward against the Saints, but apart from that a disappointing season thus far. 2/10

2 - WAKELYN
One of very few consistant performers in 2005. Not getting any quicker but has done the job on numerous key forwards very very well. I thought he was going to really struggle this season, but he has shown his worth and has been a rock at full back for us. As long as the coaching staff know his limits he can maybe get one more year out of himself. A top notch first half of the year. 7.5/10.

3 - MONTGOMERY
This guy is one I really struggle with. Always finds the footy and gets plenty of it from half back and on a wing. My major problem with MOnty not only this season but in seasons gone past is the way in which he uses the footy. Goes sideways far too often and he does not really play directly at all. That said his last two games have been very good and his workrate is unquestionable. Must be more direct!! 5/10.

4 - WANGANEEN
Inconspicuous. Wangas is certainly slowing down, but he still has shown that he is worth his spot in the side. Flashes of brilliance at times but becoming a bit too far and few between. I just wish he wa splayed up forward more often than what he is. Will become important in our push for the 8. 5.5/10

5 - LADE
For me has been good this year. Without being great and dominating up forward as he has in the past. His ruckwork has been good, but that may be because of us seeing Primus in there alot, and that could well make him look better than how he really is going. Again nothing terribly great about his year, but only because we know what this man is capable of. Id love to see some agression fromt he big man. 5/10.

6 - THOMSON
Excited about this kid. Debuted against the Saints and was given very little time on the ground. Given some more time on the weekend and looks very promising. I love his quick hands and the way he thinks his footy through. Seen him at Sturt a couple times and he looks to be a clever player. Bright future. 3/10.

7 - P BURGOYNE
Missed games through injury and bans but he is still a great great midfielder. Has plenty of pace and has shown glimpses of the PB we know. He has looked a bit wobbly and unsure with the footy at times in recent weeks but he is always a contributor and a real trier. Solid season. Hopefully he picks it up in the run home. 7/10.

8 - S BURGOYNE
Ditto above with games he has missed. Sean has shown us his importance in the past two games. Beautifully balanced and perfect foot skills. If only he was fit for the entire season. Once again will be vital in our push for finals footy. 3/10.

10 - FRANCOU
Josh, like Primus has come off major injuries and has struggled immensely with his form. Very up and down, and has just seemed to have lost that amazing ability to evade men in the packs and get a quick handball out. Unfortunately Josh is not terribly versatile and can only really play through the middle. He kicked three on Saturday night and hopefully gives him some added confidence. AT best he should only be one of our midfield rotations. No longer in our first choice on ball brigade. 2.5/10

12 - SHATTOCK
One of our recruits. Much maligned for his disposal and lets not beat around the bush it is pretty poor. He has shown a little bit and I have been encouraged by his physical appraoch. If he can sharpen his skills up he may push his way into the side. However, when everyone is fit I can not find a place for him in the side. 2.5/10.

13 - ECKERMANN
Looks to be a good little player. Nice disposal and is a fit kid. Has not had enough time to tell whether he is up to the level in my opinion. Signs are however promising. 2/10.

15 - PICKETT
Reckless act cost him the first 5 weeks and has really stuggles to impose himself since he has been back. Highly disappointing season thus far for Choppy, but only because we know what this man can do. Looks as though he tired to alter his game and that was to his and our detriment. Thankfully he showed us the Choppy we know on Saturday night. Hard at the man, hard at the footy and kicking goals. 3/10.

16 - TREDREA
Dead set gun and when needed he has stood up as he always does. Warren is a special player and should be skipper. He has struggled in games due simply to lack of opporunities and the failure of our midfield to give him some decent service. HIs kicking at goal has been ok but he could still kick more goals than he does. It is a bit concerning the way in which he tries to get his opponent under the footy and then run on to it. Warren you are a mountain and you have good pace. USE THAT !! Without doubt in our top 4 or 5 for the year. 8.5/10.

17 - DEW
My player of the season thus far. Sensational in alot of games and when he has been down has worked in a way that I did not think dewy could. Has shown a real passion and desire for the guernsey. He has looked polished off half back and when thrown into the middle has been very serviceable. Ideally Id like to see him used on a half back flank with bursts in the middle and up forward. A real game breaker. Keep it up Dewy. 9/10.

18 - K CORNES
Gone on from last season and is just a ball magnet. HIs work ethic and fitness allow him to be a really dominant and damaging player. Still gets some tough run with roles, but amazes me how he can still get plenty of the footy at the same time. Like P Burgoyne has looked and bit fumbly at times, but put this down to the pressure applied. HIs disposal can improve and Im sure Kane knows this. A really good season though and will become if not already a premier on baller in the league. 8/10.

19 - BISHOP
Disappointing. Has been well beaten on a few occassions now and is really starting to look shakey back there. Gets out muscled and at times his positioning is terrible. Really needs a lift, otherwise should dropped. Does not provide as much run as has in the past. 3/10

20 - BROGAN
Suffering a loss of confidence. For me is our number 1 ruckman. Has looked out of sorts in the games he has played. Dropping marks and just looking shaky at times. Is however very important. Easily our most athletic ruckman and his game against the SAINTS filled me with hope. Obviously not Chocco though. 3.5/10.

21 - WILSON
Troubled by injury and thankfully he will be back soon. HAs not been as good as he can be this year. Was absolutely woeful against the Tigers, but this fella is Port through and through. Again an important player in our push for the finals. Needs to lift to the levels from last year when fit. 3.5/10.

22- MAHONEY
Second year was always going to be more difficult for Josh. Was good to see him play well on Saturday night, but apart from the night has been non existant. Hopefully his game on the weekend gives him the confidence he needs. HIs desire and workrate are very good and his forward pressure was a key to success last year. 2.5/10.

24 - WHITE
In the games he has played has been disappointing. I am a big wrap for this fella but has just not grabbed his chance. Looks uncomfortable around Tredrea. PLay him out of Full forward, he can take a mark and he kicks goals in the SANFL, but just cant seem to crack it in the big time. Still young - still got time. 2/10.

25 - CASSISSI
Solid season. Has started to improve his form in the past fortnight. Reason being he has gone through the middle and got some good touches. Can still do the run with roles well. Very good defensive midfield player, but he has got to pick up his attacking side to become a complete midfielder. 5.5/10.

26 - COCHRANE
Gold pass holder. Not good enough for AFL. Manages to get games and is just not worth a midfield rotation. Has improved slightly in the last two weeks but does not offer anything a kid would not. 1/10.

27 - POULTON
Poults has been given one game and I think he could have maybe played one or two more. We all know his weakness is his disposal. I cannot question the mans endeavour but looks as though he will be delisted at season end. Would not mind if he were given one more chance. Better than Cochrane IMO. 1/10.

28 - THURSTANS
Terrible. Looks too laconic and as if it is just going to happen for him. Needs to get some aggression in to his game. Looked ok down back but really struggled up forward. He has to step up. 2.5/10.

29 - KINGSLEY
I am one of this guys biggest critics. He has once again shown that he is worthy of his spot in the 22. Started very slowly but has picked up in the last two weeks to be high in our Best players. I am glad to see he is not used off half back as much, because he is so indecisive at times. Can be a frustrating player but is looking good again. 6/10

30 - CHAPLIN
Cannot fault the games or should I say halves he has played. Made a couple of errors in these halves, but he looks very poised. He is a good size and a smooth mover down there. Surely if Bish's form or lack of continues this man will get an opportunity. 2/10.

31 - SALOPEK
Injury riddled is this fella. I have seen him enough to know that he has quality. He has yet to show this ability on the big stage. Not blessed with pace, but neither is Roger James. He needs to show some agression and really work hard to ge this body right. I think this kid, like Thommo has the ability to become a key player in the middle for us in the future.1.5/10.

33 - EBERT
Well I thought this bloke was set for a big season. Given plenty of opportunites to show what he is made of. Although he does not look comfortable in the role he is playing, he just misses marks, makes poor decisions and fumbles far too often for an AFL Player. Hopefully he gets some time through the middle and maybe there he can show us what he is made of. 2.5/10.

35 - C CORNES
Was worried early on. Looked dis interested and played far too loosely. Even though his role is to roam across half back, he still needs to show some sort of accountability. Missed games with injury and since he has been back has been the Chad we all know. Absolutely sensational in the past two weeks. 4.5/10.

36 - PETTIGREW
SHown glimpses but again like Chappy not given too many opportunites. Looks a real good athlete and I can see a future for him across half back. He is a very versatile player and his SANFL form is always good. Still young and slightly built, but reminds me a bit of a young Ben Hart. 2/10.

38 - JAMES
Season wrecked by injury and possibly even career. I pray that he gets the knee right because in the games he has played he has showed what class he has. We need this bloke fit and firing if we are to push for the finals. 2/10.

39 - SURJAN
Promising player but relies on confidence. He will be cut up about his game on Saturday night, because he was abysmal. He has the tools to be a very handy player. I would like to see him persisted with and given a go behind the footy where he played some good stuff in the Wiz Cup. 1.5/10.

42- WALSH
Great little pickup. Fabulous off half back. Pretty pacy and shows plenty of grit. He has shown he can run with the ball and hit a target with no problem at all. I have been very impressed the way he has slotted straight into the side. One of our better players thus far. 8/10.

They are my thoughts fellas. Feel free to add.

My team heading into our match with the Hawks would be as follows.

Wanganeen Lade Pickett
Cassissi Tredrea Eckermann
Dew R JAMES Kingsley
MOntgomery C Cornes S Burgoyne
Bishop* Wakelyn Walsh
Ruck - Brogan K Cornes P Burgoyne
inter - Primus** Francou surjan Mahoney

* = Last chance
** = WOuldnt have him there at all but ....

I feel as though Toby and Damon White may be spending alot of time in the SANFL. This being due to Primus not being allowed to be dropped.

Great review. I agree that there are too many players who have not been given enough chances. Surj should definately be persisted with. And Poults deserves one more go.

poults should be ahead of cochrane, as you said. I don't get it... both give 110%, both have poor disposal. Poulton gets alot of the ball, cochrane doesn't.

I think the only thing going for cochrane, is his long kick. Well, i think he seems to have a long kick?

Fantastic assessment Arsene.

A little harsh on some, but we all see things differently.

Primus: Struggled and hasnt been helped by being played in the ruck.Has looked better up forward and would hope thats where he plays out the rest of his career. 2/10

Wakelin: Has been absolutley outstanding and would be in the top 3 for the b&f.Cant recall him being beaten and has had to hold up the defence in the absence of cornes, bishop and brogan helping out. 9/10

Montgomery: I feel he is just hanging on at the minute.Does some good things, but does some very poor things also.Pace and leap have gone. 3/10

Wanganeen: Has been good in a few games and quiet in others.I suspect he will turn it on in the latter half of the season. 5/10

Ladey: Hard to judge due to the shuffle our ruckmen have found themselves in. 6.5/10

Thomson:For him to have a couple of games under his belt at this stage is a fantastic sign.Hasnt had much time on field, but i think there are others that will make way before he does. 8/10

P.Burgoyne:Has been fantastic in the games he has played. Is our main source of run through the midfield.Had a poor game at the weekend however. 7/10

S.Burgoyne: His value went up when he wasnt even playing. His run and creativity is essential to our success.

Ezard:Have seen him a couple of times and has looked good for westies. Cant believe the morons dropped him yesterday. 6/10

Francou: has obviously struggled, but hasnt done himself any favours with his continued undisciplined acts.Cant be our no.1 on-baller, but will be good to rotate through. 2/10

Shattock: Poor disposal and doesnt add much to the side in my opinion. 2/10

Eckermann: Like thomson, having played already is a good sign. 7/10

Byron:Hopefully the 2nd half at the weekend brings back the confidence. 3/10

Tredders:Works tirelessly every week and has had almost no support up forward as well as poor service. Not at his best, which is a good sign. 7/10

Dewy: Has been brilliant. Not only has his kicking been at its best, but he has been winning contested ball and distributing well by hand. 9/10

K.Cornes:Has carried the midfield and has won his share of the ball in every game.Has had to rove to a losing ruckman most weeks and has been without carr,Burgoyne,James,Schofield from last season. 9.5/10

Bishop:Has struggled of late and looks low on confidence. Expect a better 2nd half of the year. 3/10

Brogan:Was woeful pre getting suspended, but hasnt dropped his head and looks intent on having an impact. 2/10

Wilson:Will add a lot of steel to the defence and a half-back line of s.burgoyne cornes wilson could be the springboard to our success.

Mahoney: Injured against freo then struggled with poor form, but has hit back well in the last couple of weeks and has shown god intensity. 4/10

symes: Better form recently with centrals, but disposal may still be a problem at afl level.

white: Damon has great potential, but its not been evident as yet.Whether it be confidence, opportunity or structure he has struggled at afl levbel. 2/10

Cassisi:He is growing on me.Has excellent hands in close and does the important jobs each week. 5/10

Cochrane: No comment.

Poults: Go the maggies.

Thurstans: Looked ready to take the next step until he got injured. I feel he would be a better option than playing 3 ruckmen as he is flexible. Will return to the side at some stage, but he must perform when the opportunity comes.3/10

Kingsley: Has been steady. Not going to be a top-liner, but is a good player to rotate through the middle.5/10

Chaplin:Looks a smart player, just needs to add to his frame and be patient.
Good sanfl form is a positive sign.

Salopek: If he can get himself right he might find himself playing an important role on our side.Great talent, but we need to see it now. 2/10

Gilham:Has been in good form with north, but doesnt look like getting a game.

Ebert:Has been poor, but has been played up forward for too long.Great potential, but is down on confidence. 2/10

Cornes:His past 4 matches have been great and his enthusiasm has seemed to spark the boys. 6/10

Pettigrew:Looks ready to play afl, but there isnt a spot for him at the moment.Cant see his footy developing much whilst at westies. 4/10

James: Just make sure his right for the 2nd half of the season.

Surjan:Good potential, but needs to take his opportunities.

walsh:Sensational pick-up and has performed immediately in a struggling side.Is a dasher and is a great addition. 9/10

When all available my best 22 would look like this:

Walsh Wakelin Bishop
S.Burgoyne C.Cornes Wilson
Dew K.Cornes Kingsley
Pickett Tredrea Ebert
Thurstans Lade Wanganeen
1/r Brogan,James,P.Burgoyne
i/c, Cassisi,Francou,Mahoney + Salopek/surjan/thomson/eckermann/montgomery

Primus isnt in my side, but i dont want to get into that.
The backline looks outstanding and 5 running players, which will help to overcome our defficiency in the midfield.

That is what makes the least sense. If you argue that Cochrane is picked on the grounds of his work ethic, teammanship, good training whatever, surely Poults would look just as good on paper. In addition Poults could be played in an onball/wing type role but would probably win more contested possessions, be more direct with his disposal (even if it goes to the opposition) and be tougher at the opposition bodies.

Doesn't really make much sense as one does really well consistently at SANFL level while the other does adequately on the rare occasions he is dropped.

It does reek of bigtime favouritism.

Really feel sorry for Poulton. If they don't think he is good enough than OK, but don't rub his nose in it every week by selecting Cochrane instead.

For consistency and their overall years so far, my best five (probably won't quite fit in with votes however) have been:

Kane Cornes,
Wakelin
Dew
Cassisi
Peter Burgoyne.

For the games they have played Chad and JB are also in the mix, while Walsh, Wangas and Tredders have been best of the rest.

PRIMUS - Good coaches try to know their players' limitations better than the players do themselves. Primus is a talented player with heart, but he should not have been brought into the side as our #1 ruckman. He should have been played as a cantankerous forward pocket, as was originally planned. Choco screwed up.

WAKELIN - His best year in the AFL, I'd reckon. He competes with his man, isn't getting horrendously outled much, isn't paniced when the ball is near him. Good effort, should be an AA contender at this stage. Has likely bought himself another year.

MONTGOMERY - King of the Hangover crew. Insipid in our worst losses, among our best after a rocket is sent up the squad. He could've played better all year.

WANGANEEN - He's old. Not yet Darryl White old, but certainly Martin Pike old. Dangerous though, and still useful as a utility, but how many old utilities can you have?

LADE - At this stage of his career, he is the cunning old ruckman that knows all the tricks. Its not rated, but in terms of skills for his position, he'd be right up there with Roger James. I'd like to have seen one dominant game this year, which is the only real mark against him - he's contributed, but not excelled.

THOMSON - Yep, good. Leave in the oven for 40 games and serve.

P BURGOYNE - Good when fit.

S BURGOYNE - Good when fit.

FRANCOU - Play him off the bench. He is not a full-time centre square midfielder, and he is not a full-time forward. See PRIMUS.

SHATTOCK - Fairly unimpressive for the most part, at least he has a bit of aggro, and if nothing else we can be sure he'll try to rough up his opponent if instructed to. I doubt he'd be in my first 22 though.

ECKERMANN - Yep, good. I think he needs more SANFL time now he's had a taste...needs to work on his forward line delivery.

PICKETT - Byron was hungover within a few weeks of the premiership. He's been out of sorts all year, and could have been dropped a couple of times. Needs to lift, because I don't think Choco can give him `flu' instead of dropping him again this year.

TREDREA - You can tell he knows what most Port fans are thinking, because this year has seen him echo our thoughts - namely, whats the point of him being a gun when the rest of the side are playing moronic football? Kicked a couple of bags, but a pretty quiet season from him...it'd be his first season without improvement in his game, I'd say.

DEW - Yep, he's been good. He plays well when others are unsure, and is a real quality player. He's the opposite of JT Cornes, basically.

K CORNES - Yeah, he's OK. I'd compare him to Scott West, in that I don't really rate a lot of his football, but he does get it a lot and everyone else thinks he's tops. I don't think he's as damaging as he could/should be.

BISHOP - Wakelin would seem to have pinched his spot on the 2006 list. Poor this year, I think Walsh's rebound has robbed him off opportunities for his own, which forces him to impress with his actual defensive game. Which is why he doesn't look so good.

BROGAN - Who the hell knows? I know that until he got suspended, he was terrible and it was a well-timed returned to the SANFL, but last week it looked like he had remembered how to take a mark. So why drop him?

WILSON - I remember this guy. Used to play in defence, didn't he?

MAHONEY - Hangover Crew. Another that has lifted since the rocket.

WHITE - Fitting into the same forward line as an established Tredrea is about the toughest ask in football. Its a good thing he's had plenty of opportunities to do so...oh wait.

CASSISI - Yeah, ok. Started slow, is coming good now. Could potentially be in the hangover crew but I dunno that thats why he's played badly.

COCHRANE - He's quite tall.

POULTON - He's not so tall, ergo, no AFL.

THURSTANS - Everything we said about him last year, before the finals, looks true again. Damn.

KINGSLEY - Unimpressive. I'd say he's in the hangover crew, but his game is still pretty consistent with early season form. I guess he doesn't have much impact on whether we win or lose.

CHAPLIN - The other reason why Bishop should be gone for 2006.

SALOPEK - Get some new limbs.

EBERT - He's an `almost'. He's almost an OK small forward, he is almost a good centre-square player. Can we just get him played in the middle for lengthy periods? Thanks. Reminds me of young Francou.

C CORNES - Deputy of the Hangover Crew. You can always tell when he's decided to play or not quite early on, and it amuses me to think that he thinks we can't see it.

PETTIGREW - Yep, good. He's willing to create, which is good...now he needs to learn to stop. Yet another reason why Bishop should be gone for 2006. I like most of his decision making, but it obviously needs improvement with experience.

JAMES - Gun.

SURJAN - Shouldn't have left Centrals, as he's picked up the Curse of Changing SANFL Clubs. No-one has done this and gone on to be a decent AFL player. By all reports has as big a head as 1999 Chad Cornes...last week will be a real eye opener to him, I reckon. Could yet improve this year.

WALSH - Yep, good. This is the sort of trade we should be doing, giving up nothing much for a serviceable player. Not drafting delisted guys early because we think the Kangas are interested.

Port: #43
Melb: Peter Walsh + #45

Would also be interested in your assessment of Choke-o this year.....and the rest of the panel for that matter......but some pretty good comments here.... :)

Interesting Dew is rated highly after struggling with form, fatness, and other interests last year.....seems to have turned the corner.

Good report card, Porthos. I give you a B+.

On Wakelin, I think it's his second best year, not as good as 2002 (was that the year he got injured, if so, that one). Brought the handsome that year. That's saying a bit though, because he should've been AA that year.

I think that his skill when the side has been under pressure has been better this year than in 2002. In 2002, he wasn't tested much and it showed when he was. Thats a pretty big difference in my book, but your mileage may vary.

ha ha ...thanks for that ...misguided as usual... :)

I was actually genuinely interested how some of you might rate Mark's performance in what has been a difficult year so far. How has he responded to unPortman like performances ???....I think he has been remarkably balanced and hasn't lost it - particularly in the media. I actually think he has handled a relatively poor year better than he handled himself during successful years .....

Given he is an important part of the "team".....I'd be interested in a rating ?

:)

loool, freebie!

now an interesting question...who were picks #43 and #44? and who did we get with #45 out of curiousity

#43 - Michael Newton
#44 - Mitch Morton (F/S - West Coast)

#45 went to Brisbane as part of the Shattock deal

i agree he is a poor, unimaginative coach, easily flustered coach. With the players at his disposal, supposedly the best CHF in the comp and the AA CHB he has no excuse. I love it how shaun burgoyne is apparently vital to the sides success. He is a human excuse machine. Bottom four coaches in the league imo.

Mark Williams -

Shocking - Seems to think the plan from last year will work. No balls to drop Primus or francou. How Cochrane stays in the side is just amazing. How Ebert cant get more than 5 mins in the guts but cochrane is one of the rotations. How Primus is not played up forward and left to be jumped all over for so long. Brogan dropped last week... I could go on and on

0/10.

Well, the facts are the Mark Williams has only met the team's expectations/potential in probably 2 of his 6 and a bit seasons.

Look at Collingwood's list of 2002/03. Nowhere near ours. They made it to two to Grand Finals. We've certainly missed our fair share of opportunities in our AFL existence.

The light is far from shining out of his arse.

Jack......when the contents of your post does not correlate with mine....it's probably not appropriate to start by saying....."I agree"....

yes that was more for personal amusement. If you rate him though, you've got no idea. They've got a great squad, compared to what hes getting out of them.
