Midfield structure - your theories

Zero [rookies] though i do have one player that is at rookie price starting.

Presti. :D

At its core, your team structure naturally depends on where you see the value. This applies to all positions, including the midfield.

Last year I started two rookies (C.Morton, Palmer with Bird and McNamara on the bench) and that worked out well. Must say I didn't expect Morton and Palmer to do that well - I got lucky.

This year I see value elsewhere, so I won't be starting a rookie in the midfield.

How did you know?

The more i look at some of the midfield rookies though the more i can't help but think by only selecting two, i'll miss out on one, maybe even two. Really is doing my head in at the moment, can't seem to get a team i'm comfortable with.

How do you come up with statements like "Mitchel and Stanton are definitely keepers but Pendlebury might not be"? As far as I can tell all three are thereabouts. As well, Embley, Carrazzo, Scotland and Hodge are priced within 50k of the ubiquitous picks Cornes, Fisher, Goddard etc., so their drop is not going to be particularly dramatic unless for some reason you think they are going to fall away from their previous season's average by a huge deal. (The magic number won't affect their prices that quickly.) Also what you said for Hill applies equally to Raines, Grimes, Rich, Skippy, Lucas, Higgins etc. My point is I think you are picking and choosing with regard to your own team instead of looking at the big picture.

Penlybury has only scored over 1800 points once. Stanton has done it 3 years staright with avgs of 88,92,93. His top 3 avgs are all higher than Pendlebury's highest avg of 87. Mitchell has also avg 4 x higher than 87 and all in his last 4 seasons. With scoring over 1800 in all his last 3 seasons. Maybe i should have said Pendlebury isnt proven yet where the others are (you know what your gonna get by picking them a keeper). Im really thinking of Pendlebury as my 3rd best mid though. Although his improvment looks a little scarce. Where can you see him improving regardign marks, posses, tackles ect. I think he can only improve by increasing his disosal avg of 22.5 to 25/26. Although i think he will get the main TAG aswell which could limit him a bit.

I actually have 5/6 of those players and dont have Hill. So im unaware of what you are talking about here. I think Hill will play games early as stated by Harvey and if he avgs above 50 will make heaps of money. I know that can happen ot any other player at a similar low price. That gos without saying.

im taking a bit of a risk in my mids by playing three carlton players

i have gibbs, murphey and grigg

they are accompanied by swan, deledio and beams...what do people think?

Grigg has really put his hand up over the last few weeks and seems a bagain at $265k.

Was he in your side prior to NAB Cup or have you seen a role change away from 'stopper'? Any inside goss?

Was always in the best 22 imo, even if it was borderline.

Might still act as a stopper, but as you said, has stepped up.

Im starting to see heaps of value in the mids now. Stenglein, Tuck, Haselby, Grigg. That players like Foley, Vince, Simpson, Griffen jump out me aswell.

I think your starting mids are so, so important. It differentiates sides the most so if you get it right you should do very well. Get it wrong and expect to suffer. Must keep end in mind though. Some people seem happy to finish with Tuck, Selwood, Gibbs, Pendlebury and than bring in i suppose the top 2 Ablett, Bartel. When alot of people will be finishing with A/B/C/S/KC/Gibbs.

My starting mids last year were:

Kornes, Cross, Stevens, Jones, Houli, Mcnamara (Palmer, Bartram)

Wouldn't exactly call that a success. However I finished off with:

Bartel, Corey, S.Thompson, Kornes, Cross, Stevens.

I think that trading well and at the right time is more important than your initial selections, as long as your initial selections aren't completely disastrous.

And what that proves is that 3 of your starting centres are going to be with you the whole year.

Therefore selecting with that in mind Ive got Swan Selwood Gibbs... hoping to bring in A/B/C. Ive got two players who im hoping will jump in price quickly in Tuck and either Reilly or Masten or Grigg, with a rookie, mabye beams, rich, otten ect.

Ending with a midfield of Ablett Bartel Swan Selwood Gibbs (another premium)

Just changed things up a fraction.

Premium
Premium
Keeper (probable premium)
Mid priced (small chance of becoming a keeper)
Mid-low priced improver
Rookie

Can't bring myself to start more than one rookie.

I must be as well, my line-up is currently the same.

I'd like mine to look like that but i can't split two Keeper (potential premiums) at the moment so i've got both. Mind you i starting to think if i don't start a rookie in the midfield i may be missing out because there are a few that take my fancy at the moment.

Yeah it's a difficult balance. Start too few and there's the risk of missing out, but start too many and there's the risk that you won't generate enough cash on the bench for future upgrades.

With that structure your the odd man out in this thread, What does that tell you? Two more rookies on the bench and your on the way to half a box of donuts in rd 1.
Ha, you make it sound like it's a bad thing to be the odd one out.

All the same I could be driving away with a brand new car in October :)

I thought it was Kornes, Pendlebury and Gibbs about 5 days ago. Jumped off Kornes and pendlebury because they didnt score well last week .

You are jumpin on and off players way too quickly your not the only one though.

I think the ideal starting 3 would be
Corey - captain option
Kornes - captain option but a top 6 mid finisher come end of season who is underpriced
Gibbs - cheap definite keeper
