If you look at the entry for Frederick Huntley it says that he was killed in action and that he played cricket for Collingwood and football with the League club.

That he played cricket with Collingwood is not in dispute as Frederck William Huntley is listed as having played for Collingwood cricket club and being born in 1895.

Only problem is that no Huntley is listed as having played football for Collingwood at all. The list of Collingwood players has a Les Huntington who played 4 games for Collingwood in 1914( when Huntley would have been 19) but no Huntley.

Are we talking about a name change and a new football ANZAC."

Is there anything in this.

Huntley was definitely at Collingwood as a cricketer for the Collingwood player's team.

This report of the Referee of 29 September 1915 says he enlisted.

http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article129344685

He is not however listed in Collingwood's 57 ANZACs on their website.

Now if he is supposed to be Les Huntington from Coburg, in 1915, there was a W Huntington of Coburg

Brunswick Leader 9 April 1915

http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-page8485978

What confuses the issue further is there was a Jack Huntington who played for Melbourne in 1914 also from Coburg and later who also played cricket for Coburg according to Demonwiki.

His own family (brother Herbert) , in his death notice only state Cricket. I would have thought Football might have had a mention as well.
http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article155158938 as a Brother I would have made mention of both if they were relevant.

Just a query about Hearn. Ref made to him serving in WW2 - where does this come from I wonder,
as at the moment I cannot find him mentioned on the Nominal Roll site

Some Ancestry family trees have year of death as 1993, others have the year as 1995.
None that I've seen so far have an independent source cited for whichever claim is being made.

I was looking at this last night :)
I think he served under the name William Hearn - http://www.ww2roll.gov.au/Veteran.aspx?serviceId=A&veteranId=468678
He had already had several several run ins with the law and been in jail by that time so perhaps that led him to use a different name...
His mother's name was Sarah so it seems to fit reasonably well - and the name William may help us find his death but I've had no joy so far.
Electoral roll records under his birth name cease after WWII.

The Queensland death is likely ( location not date) as his wife Patricia Marion http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article11262844 dies in 2012 as listed on Ryerson Index ( yet oddly not on the Gold Coast Bulletin Tribute site) ahh it was a Probate notice not a death notice From Ryerson

Confirmed as still living. I located an email address for his son and received the below reply this morning:

"He is my father, born Mordialloc 31 May 1925.
He played for NMFC in 1942, being the winner of the Colts' Cup that year.
He is well and truly alive, living in Queensland. I shall send him a copy of this email."

Given the notice I think we can check off Jackie Howe June 9 2001

The Army Roll John Alexander Howe states a birth of 1920. Given 1922 Howe would have been eligible for service in 1940 as an 18 yr old I would hesitate to incude him as a service person.

Herald Sun

HOWE. - John Alexander, on June 9, 2001. Happily married for many years to Zoe, dear father of Phillip, Linda and Scott, father-in-law of Vivienne, Spiro and Verena, proud grandfather of Adam, Stephen and Russell and Georgina. The Final Siren

Edward "Ted" Page Heffernan (Carlt 1897) (B: 16/5/1869) Orig club Fitzroy Jnrs. AFL says he debuted age 27<snip>

There is an entry at Vic BDMs for Edward Page Heffernan in 1869 #8881
parents Thomas and Mary (Minogue - search for M*g* to cover spelling variation)
Children listed as being born to those parents are registered in 1853, 1857, 1858, 1861, 1867, 1869, 1871, 1873

There is a death for a Richard Heffernan (aged 34) registered in 1904 #6277
his parents are listed as Thomas and Mary (Minogue)
The list of births noted above does not include any child named Richard.

Some family trees on Ancestry list 16 May 1869 as DOB for Richard, some abt 1870.
None that I have seen list a child named Edward.

I acknowledge there is more to do on this one, but perhaps a year of death has been found.
