He's 27. He will play again.
Plenty of players haven’t played a Test match after turning 27.
He’s simply not up to it he should have his papers stamped as a limited overs player only.

The genuine best thing for him will be for him to play 2 seasons or so of Shield cricket, plus be fit for county cricket. Hopefully the selectors actually do that this time.

Yes. But he made his FC debut 9 years ago but somehow keeps getting recalled with a batting average of 32 and a bowling average of 32. Even if he went back to Shield cricket, he'd have to produce 2 years of cricket beyond anything he's ever done before even at that level.

I have no problem with dropping Handscomb for this match. But the selection of Marsh? He was left out for Handscomb after scoring a 150 for WA, but got recalled after six subsequent FC innings averaged under 20. If his main purpose was to give the bowlers a rest, then surely there's someone else worth giving a chance.

The selectors have been obsessed with finding a all rounder since Flintoff destroyed us in 2005 at any cost.
This is the only reason he has continued to get gifted games in the test side, because it’s certainly not from performance.
This is a very simplistic way to look at it, but it’s also true.

.
Absolutely, he should go back to shield cricket and really work on his game and deliver.

No he’s not.
Nothing he’s shown in his career in international or domestic shows he’s absolutely up to it.
His ODI record is on par with the likes of Steve Waugh, Aravinda de Silva and Sanath Jayasuriya.

I know that and that’s why I’ve given him his due credit as a limited overs player.
He’s not the first and won’t be the last player that excels in one form but can’t mash it work at the other.

Bevan, finch brett Lee for example j as e form in short form that hasnt matched their test form.

Mm is not a test player yet.

30 tests in and :/

Same way we gifted Watson games. Symonds was carried in the side for a long time also, before his performances picked up.

At least Watson performed to a degree! This bloke is an utter hack!

Michael Bevan is a completely different case

He averaged 57 with 68 x 100’s in probably the strongest era for Shield cricket ever.

Please don’t ever mention Marsh and Bevan in the same breath ever again.

Quoting someone earlier.... He has 2 centuries, both of which came when Australia declared for over 600, so on absolute highways.

Would love to know how many of his wickets have come against tail enders....

Not only is he complete shit, he is a flat track bully!!

Lol
Vastly different era!
Green tops Pitches where the ball moved around Vs Doctored pitches flat as a road
World class bowlers vs tomato throwers
Ambrose, Akrem vs ?

Battered with a twig compared to a tree stump
Massive sized playing fields vs roped in boundaries that resemble an under 16 sized game

Never again. If they pick this useless campaigner in Sydney then we're going nowhere.

His ODI record is on par with the likes of Steve Waugh, Aravinda de Silva and Sanath Jayasuriya.

Those guys played in an era where 250-300 was a good total...

It's a mental thing, not physical.

That argument can be made for Shaun, but not Mitch. Mitch has significant technical flaws that have been easily exposed on numerous occasions.

It's a mental thing, not physical.

His batting technique is a disgrace, and has not improved. He is what he always will be, a decent number 8. He is not a frontline batsman, never will be, and we need to stop hoping it will happen by magic.

Well, it is true that Shaun goes beyond the idea of 'form' to exist in his own dimension, but from memory and sight, Mitch's technical faults tend to get fixed, and he does well for a stretch, before something else comes up, which to me suggests the real problem is mental for him as well.

How technically faults don’t get fixed, he looks good because he bats on a road and by something else coming up you mean he gets exposed by batting on a pitch with a bit of movement in it.
He’s not now and he never will be good enough as a batsmen to bat top 6 in test cricket.

He’s gone as a test cricketer

I can understand why he was picked for this test due to his bowling and the pitch being a road

But he had a perfect opportunity to make some runs show some fight and he did not

It doesn’t help when he has a hack of a batting coach in Scott muelman who was crap for wa and for Melville his grade side

There is hope for his ODI he has a good record but test cricket he needs at least 2/3 seasons in shield of solid scoring taking wickets to be even considered again for the test team

And yet he's got as good a bowling record as all of those I mentioned...
Anderson, Steyn, Boult, Southee, Morkel, Bumrah, Jadeja, Ashwin, Broad off the top of my head are all shit huh? Oh and FWIW, he's got a better batting record against England, India, New Zealand and South Africa, whom most people acknowledge are the strongest of the current era, than against the "weaker" attacks of Sri Lanka, Ireland and Afghanistan. So your argument doesn't really stand up.
