Media Mobbenfuhrer Medal - An Alternate Perspective

Season 26 was the first time I witnessed Mobbs Medal night in all its glory and I have to say it was an enjoyable night. Thanks to Cloud_ and congratulations to all the award winners and All-SFA team members. The count itself was very well presented and interesting to follow through the night. Being my first season, I was aware of the idea that it was "a ruck rover's award" but I was not aware just how important tackles and effective disposals were in the voting. Having managed my own stats thread this season I expected a very different result. While the season may be over and activity is slowing down for the Christmas period, I decided to post my findings as an exercise in improving my stat-keeping and reporting efforts.

Mobbs Top 10

Pace-Adjusted Stats Top 10

Rank | Player | Team | Position | Adj. DT \1|Thatsapaddlin|GCR|RO|1,481\2|roo2macca|GUM|RU|1,475\3|philreich|SCS|RO|1,413\4|DemonJim|MBD|RR|1,365\5|manangatang|MBD|RU|1,361\6|Tigerturbulance|FUR|RU|1,345\7|Ant Bear|SCS|RR|1,320\8|Argas Tuft|LVB|W/RR|1,310\9|Tarkyn_24|MBD|RO|1,305\10|Matty411|BOM|RU|1,298

Ant Bear certainly had a tremendous season featuring in the top 10 of Pace-Adjusted Stats however teammate philreich was arguably better across the entire season. Thatsapaddlin (Paddles_) and roo2macca were the standouts by Pace-Adjusted Stats standards and finished equal-second and sixth respectively, a solid effort by both players. While there is room for improvement with Pace-Adjusted Stats, an interesting trend develops when comparing the two top 10's.

Three of the top 5 placegetters in the Mobbs and five of the top 10 were ruck-rovers, validating the theory that the Mobbs is a ruck-rover's award. Only two ruck-rovers finished in the top 10 of Pace-Adjusted Stats (Argas Tuft, now Test Tickle, played most of his games on the wing) while the leaderboard was more evenly spread among the followers positions with three rovers and four rucks rounding out the top ten.

A Different Look

While Dream Team points are not the greatest measure of performance, they do have some merit and I have prepared a 3-2-1 for each game across the season based on the three highest Dream Team scores for each match. It is far from perfect and there are some funky results but it does provide a different perspective.

roo2macca, 6th in Mobbs voting and 2nd in Pace-Adjusted Stats, would have polled the most votes if voting was done by Dream Team scores. Incredibly, he would poll in 13 games, nearly double that of second-placed Tigerturbulance, who finished 6th in Pace-Adjusted Stats and incredibly only finished equal-25th in Mobbs voting. The top three placegetters are rucks, which is no surprise given the dominance of the position in season 26, with another two rounding out the top 10.

Mobbs winner Ant Bear wouldn't even crack the top ten on a Dream Team basis and would finish equal-15th under this method. Ant Bear polled three votes five times and two votes five times in Mobbs voting but would have polled three and two votes once and twice respectively - a massive difference to actual voting. Pace-Adjusted Stats winner, Thatsapaddlin, would finish equal-sixth under this method and despite his purple patch between rounds 9 and 12, did not finish best on ground in round 10. Players to finish in the top ten in all three methods are philreich, Thatsapaddlin and roo2macca.

Conclusion

Despite the sim's favouritism toward ruck-rovers it does a reasonable job of identifying the best players. There were some really funky results thrown up throughout the season - five players with ADT scores below 60 in a game registered at least one Mobbs vote - but at least full forwards got some love with big hauls being recognised in Mobbs voting. On the flip side, wings and centres miss out massively in Mobbs voting with Tandy polling the most of all such players with just four votes, good enough for equal-45th compared to nine votes and a 17th-placed finish under the Dream Team method. Pace-Adjusted Stats and the Dream Team voting recognise wings and centres more at the expense of full forwards.

Something none of the three methods recognise appropriately is the contribution of defenders and forwards other than full forwards. East Side Hawks S26 B&F winner, The Half Back, had an incredible season however failed to register a single Mobbs vote and would have collected votes in only one game under the Dream Team method. Halfy did manage an 81st placing (of 286 players) in Pace-Adjusted Stats, which doesn't sound fantastic but puts him in the top third of the league of all players despite playing a position that typically achieves Dream Team scores lower than the six midfield positions. A club B&F, All-SFA selection and the TFLUA-Tiger Award are highly deserved awards for an excellent season.

This season honestly showed me this award means little. The sim, and how It awards votes needs tweeking to really be an award to take seriouly IMO.

Stay tuned m8s. We’re at the frontier of the new frontier. :crystalball::darts:

Next season when I'm in the committee I'll be championing a move to retroactively strip Ant Bear of his EKA.

Previously this was a suggestion based entirely on feels but this thread has provided conclusive evidence that the award belonged to TAP.

Don’t rate it.
I played some of the all time worst RR games ever played in the history of SFA snd somehow polled votes rendering the award a joke.

Barry makes some valid points and I'm not just saying that because my heroic efforts were mentioned.
One of the more crazy stats I found using the Dream Team method was that despite his dominance for the Bears and you starting in round 6 or 7, Test Tickle actually finished below you and I - 11 votes for me (11th), nine for you (17th) and five for TT (39th). Since I had TT in the top 10 of Pace-Adjusted Stats it means he was consistently good throughout the season but rarely top three in any one game.

What? The sim’s perfectly fine. It actuallly takes into account your ball use, so if you’re turning it over you cop negative penalties. Stats definitely aren’t the be all and end all for the Mobbs, although tackles are obviously highly regarded.

Thats a fair call, but you can get someone who kicks 5 goals from a pocket, and in a winning side who misses out to others on a losing side.

And yes tackles is the biggest issue.

The same happens in the AFL though.

The biggest issue really is that the winner tends to average around 1.3-1.5 votes a game. Realistically most players that win the Brownlow sit around 1 although in this decade there’s been a trend to much higher vote counts. I think I would like to see hat you’re talking about a bit but the award in its current format still definitely holds value and should be considered the most worthy award in the game.

Overall, the Mobbs voting works pretty well. It's not perfect but this thread highlights that no method is. Your Brownlow argument is bang on because its like having one winner in the Brownlow while someone who has also excelled wins the AFLPA MVP. I look forward to breaking it down a little more.
