Fred Medal – ShaunDuggan

The Fred Medal is the award given to the player with the most goals scored throughout the season.

I’ve been part of this league since S16 and there are many players here who were prominent at the time, Duggan is one who I remember as having a real mystique and frankly he was a bit of a dick when he basically pulled a “who dis” on me when I made an approach to join the Wonders in the S27 pre-season. Well now we are 427 games into his career, a real life decade and a bit later and we finally have a reason to welcome ShaunDuggan to the stage as he is awarded the Fred Medal for his Season 38 goalscoring feats with a tally of 78 goals and 32 behinds for the season. Am I being a little mean? Sure. I love ShaunDuggan and am proud to see him here etching his name into Sweet FA folklore. For the people of the league, we finally know who dis is, he is the Fred Medallist.

Thanks Filth.

I'm honored to have won this prestigious award. It's all the more special to have been presented this by yourself.

Certainly been a journey.

Awards have avoided me like anti vaxxers have avoided COVID shots, but it's nice to have something next to my name for once.

East Side Hawks v Ophidian Old Boys at The Eyrie

Well records are meant to be broken and I guess it’s my pleasure to summarise where one of my own was crushed. The Hawks welcomed the Old Boys in a hotly anticipated contest and the game started with Tarkyn_24 kicking the first of many on his way to a record breaking 13 (and like the famous Buddy Franklin 13 I was there and it hurt my feelings). The Hawks piled on a massive 9.9 for the quarter which didn’t yet look like a murder as the OOB’s had still put up 4 in a disjointed goalfest. The second half went in much the same manner with the Boy’s still mathematical and doing their best to keep up but the 45 point third break score was going too prove insurmountable as the OOB’s beat Tarks by 38 points. Giant Strides, PhenomenalV1 and TY24 had huge games in the middle with the OOB’s potentially finding votes through Dingster and Mrs Turbo.

Dragons FFC v Mount Buller Demons at Ljp86's Lair

Two teams at different ends of the top 8 and the Demons looking to solidify their spot at the top of the ladder so we all know how this goes. Inaccuracy cost the Dragons as they managed 4.3 to 5 straight in the first but a surge of goals in the second saw them take a 32 point buffer into half time. The Demons worked hard to stem the scoring and chip back in but the end result was an unsatisfying 21 point loss for them. DragoDelph, Purple Jesus and Blaze Storm will be in the race for votes for the Dragons with moginie and Gralin chances for the Demons.

Sin City Swamprats v Fighting Furies at The Underground Stadium

A real see-sawing contest in this one as the Furies and Rats both traded goals for three quarters, the Furies holding a goal advantage at both quarter and half time as the Rats powered into the lead for what was to be a blockbuster final stanza. Well, the Rats were left to wonder what they had done wrong as their defence was battered by the Furies who shut the Rats out of the game on their way to a 25 point win and some good forward pressure by Raz. The Rats will see some votes perhaps for philreich or damicky but this was a masterclass by omgfridge and Frothies Mcveigh.

3 Frothies Mcveigh 2 philreich 1 omgfridge

Gold City Royals v Baghdad Bombers at The Golden Throne

The Royals welcomed the Bombers to the Throne for this hot contest and to keep it succinct they didn’t do too much to make their guests feel welcome as they jumped to an early lead which they sustained in Q2 taking a 20 point lead into the second half. An 8 goal to 5 third quarter set this one in stone as the Bombers could not snatch this back ending up going down by 34. Nothing, Crimson Azure and manicpie will be considered for the winners and DemurePrincess may get the tacklers award snaring a vote for the losers.

Gumbies FFC v Coney Island Warriors at The House of Gumby

The Gumbies and Warriors closed out the round with the match of the round between two clubs soaring up the ladder and the Warriors were already behind the 8-ball as this game celebrated @zackah’s 350th and the Gumbies kicked the first couple before the Warriors levelled it at the first break. This closeness continued to the long break with neither team breaking the deadlock. There was a slight edge taken into the last quarter by the Gumbies and they withstood a solid challenge by the Warriors to take the prize in a ten point win. cats_09 and Falconista were superb for the Gumbies with Freofalcon and TheInjuryFactory working hard for the Warriors.

East Side Hawks 13.15.93 defeat Dragons FFC 10.13.73

The Hawks continued their good form in the Match of the Round with a comfortable enough win at Home, PhenomenalV1 and TY24 carried from the middle of the park as the Hawks Key Forward Tarkyn_24 was unusually quiet with just 2 majors.

Loonerty , boncer34 , por_please_ya and indeed the entirety of the midfield group performed admirably as a supporting cast as RU_ managed 4 shots on goal with 2 of his 5 goals coming then to seal the deal in the final quarter.

Blaze Storm and freo84 toiled hard but didn't have enough Dragons come with them for a full four quarters, and defensive efforts on the line by Hawks defenders such as Itsmyshow eight minutes into the fourth halted any momentum the Dragons had found.

Mt. Buller Demons 16.11.107 defeated by Roys FFC 21.8.134

In a high scoring affair that featured incredible accuracy from the away Roys, the Demons slid down the ladder for the first time after holding that top spot for most of the season. Scythe94 was a lone star for the Dees with his 116 DreamTeam Points being close to 50 more than the next teammate.

The Roys featured a comprehensive team effort with fitzroybowiedog and DERRINALPHIL chipping in a handy two goals each from further up the ground, as TheGoatBaron nabbed a hefty six goals for himself. Whilst the lead was as short as 15 a fair way into the 3rd Quarter, and 7 in the 4th, the Roys coasted in the end to victory thanks to an all round team effort capped off by goals from royboy2, Aristotle Pickett and Roylion in a five minute burst to ice the game.

Fighting Furies 8.12.60 defeated by Gumbies FFC 15.11.101

With both teams looking to stake their place in the top 8, this match was a must win and up until the end of the 3rd quarter, less than two goals separated the clubs in a low-scoring, hard fought contest.

The Gumbies then piled on 6 goals to 1 in the latter stages of the fourth quarter to completely destroy any hopes of the Furies arresting their losing streak. CatToTheFuture was unbelievably dominant with 34 touches and 2 goals for the Gumbies through the middle of the ground, whilst DinoSoar and GWS Goose combined for 8 goals for the Gumbies. Furies ShaunDuggan proved his worth with 5 goals of his own, but couldn't get his team over the line with so few other contributors

Las Vegas Bears 12.9.81 defeated by Gold City Royals 14.19.103

The top four contending Royals led the Bears throughout the whole course of the match and never looked significantly tested by the Las Vegas Club despite the scoreline being respectable throughout. Brenton Davy 's inaccurate kicking of 5.8 didn't prove too costly and only further showed what end of the ground the majority of this game was played at.

It was a full team effort from the Royals who didn't have any standout performances per say, unlike the Bears where SSSSSS and Senor M both stood head and shoulders above everyone else, but solid contributions of disposal counts and goals from bench players, small forwards and midfielders like Smartys Power , Mr Cheese , Crimson Azure and MrPremiership proved invaluable.

Coney Island Warriors 26.20.176 defeat Ophidian Old Boys 20.12.132

In a thrilling contest, the Warriors rampaged their way through the OOB's backline and despite the best efforts from the forwards from Spotswood, couldn't match the firepower brought to them. With 12 multiple goal scorers across both teams, none impressed more so than The Filth Wizard who found form with 7 majors of his own. brian_muz Dinsdale and FootyGuy13 all had stand out accumulating performances along with multiple goals for the Warriors.

thewizardmelon dominated the ruck battle for the OOBS, and with the lead at only 8 points halfway through the third, it was anyones game. The Warriors piled on a 6 to 2 goal run in the second half of the premiership quarter to put the result away.

West Coast Wonders 15.13.103 drew Sin City Swamprats 15.13.103

In an exciting clash at The Colosseum both teams could not be split after four quarters of high quality Qooty. dogs105 and Wonders stalwart ClarkeM led the team to a comfortable half time lead but the Swamprats seemed a different team in the 2nd half. Rodney Dangerfield and Jewelsbon struck early to put the game back on an even keel, enter Ant Bear with a crucial goal in the 4th Quarter to have the Swamprats in the lead.

In the end, it came down to DenieD keeping his Wonders team in the mix, with a surging Swamprats team the Wonders full forward held firm and with only seconds to play the West Coast Wonder's akkaps had the chance to establish himself as a big game player...a goal to win, a point to draw, akkaps wound up and cometh the man, cometh the moment, he absolutely shanked it to end up with a draw.

Las Vega Bears 22.17 (149) defeat Baghdad Bombers 18.6 (114)

The Bears fresh off the bye hosted the Bombers fresh off a 34 point loss. The 11th placed Bears started off hot with the first 3 goals of the game before the Bombers hit back to trail by 14 points at quarter time. Matera92 was strong early for the bears.

The second quarter saw the Bears pull away to a 22 point lead 3 teams and the Bombers reel it back in. At half time the bottom of the table Bombers were only 10 points down despite 3 goals a piece to Art Vandelay_ and JoseMourinho thanks to having 9 individual goal kickers with only in form ruck MayTheNorthBeWithU on 2 for Baghdad

The third quarter saw the bears pull away with a 6 goal to 2 quarter as the influence of JoshWoodenSpoon began to be felt. The Bombers fought back in the fourth winning the quarter on the back of four goals from Grav but still going down by 35 points in the end.

Dragons FFC 19.7 (121) defeat Roys FFC 10.5 (65)

The 7th placed Dragons were looking to cement their spot in the 8 while the Roys off the bye were looking to climb into finals contention. A tight first quarter saw the Roys take a 1 point lead into the break. Bonz had two goals at quarter time signalling the start of a big day. 5 more goals in the second to the Dragons Full Forward put them in a comfortable position at half time with only TheGoatBaron hitting the board for the Roys in the second.

The Roys came out after the long break and kicked the first two goals of the quarter before the Dragons hit back. The final quarter saw the teams trade goals with the mids for both sides hitting the board Ljp86 kicking two and Pie 4 Life working hard to slow down SpecialBruce and fitzroybowiedog and the Dragons winning the quarter and game.

Fighting Furies 18.14 (122) defeat Coney Island Warriors 18.12 (120)

The 5th placed Furies hosted the 2nd placed Warriors in what could be a preview of finals qooty. The Furies were looking to keep the momentum of their previous win going while the Warriors were trying to maintain homefield advantage for the finals. Reigning Mobbs medalist pantskyle kicked the first goal of the match from the middle quickly matched by Furies on baller Frothies Mcveigh

The first quarter set the tone for the match, close and many lead changes, with mids and small forwards for both teams being influentail throughough the day and the second quarter was more of the same. The Cryptkeeper crazywildhorse working hard for the Furies while Warriors ruck spudmaster pushed forward to hit the scoreboard

13 goals were kicked in the third quarter including 2 by rfctigerarmy off the bench for the Furies and 2 to Warriors half foward brian_muz leading to a 9 point Furies lead at 3 quarter time. The final quarter saw Warriors full forward The Filth Wizard put his side in front only for Furies big man NaturalDisaster to break the heart of Coney Island right at the end securing a 2 point win.

Ophidian Old Boys 16.6 (102) defeat West Coast Wonders 14.6 (90)

The Old Boys at home held onto 8th with a big win last round, the Wonders are sitting 12 after the bye and would be hoping to avoid the wooden spoon with a win and two first quarter goals to HARPSichord was a good start but it was inaccurate kicking from the OOBs that saw the quarter time lead be only 5 points. The second quarter saw the Old Boys straighten up and kick straighter with winger Pugsley kicking two and the Old Boys forwards adding 4 goals.

The third quarter saw the Wonders close the gap largely thanks to croweater 41 who kicked 3. The fourth saw the two teams trade goals with Over The Post and Robertio both getting their second of the day from the middle and croweater 41 getting another 2 a great individual haul but not enough to stop the Old Boys running out 12 point winners

Sin City Swamprats 14.11 (95) defeat East Side Hawks 14.5 (89)

10th placed Sin City hosted 6th placed East Side in the final match of the round. The Hawks were favorites going with a big win in Round 14 and the Rats were trying to avoid losing two in a row and keep their chances of playing finals alive. Tarkyn_24 had just set the single game record for goals kicked and who the Swamprats played on him today would be important with league veteran MP_ given the nod from the coaches

The first quarter saw Sin City rookie full forward Raz kick 2 while Tarks could only manage the one behind and the Swamprats took an 11 point lead into the break. A low scoring second quarter saw the rats hold onto a slim lead thanks to a late goal to half forward Rodney Dangerfield

In the third quarter there were five lead changes but Tarkyn_24 kicked 2 goals and The Majestic kicked their third to help the Hakws to a slim 3 point lead heading into the fourth. Quick goals the Swamprats saw them regain the lead, PhenomenalV1 twice kicking goals to get the Hawks within 5 points before Raz put the game just out of reach allowing the Swamprats to hold on for a 6 point win

S38 R16 (Heritage Round): James Colorado
Mount Buller Demons 15.9.99 defeated by West Coast Wonders 18.9.117, at the Snow Dome.

The Sweet FA's oldest and most lukewarm rivalry took centre stage in Heritage Round, with the Wonders defying a middling season to this point to take a win on the road and maintain bragging rights. An early lead was not quite enough to keep the Demons at bay, who kept it close all game and even took the lead at three quarter time, though the effort to overtake was not matched with the desire to maintain and the Wonders were able to kick away with what they had cunningly kept in reserve to make it a true four quarter performance. Both teams shared the goal scoring load, with sausageroll making a play for the Fred as well as the EKM with four, ably assisted by Bluelegs with three, while the Wonders saw Roonescape and Ressies SwampPig lead an even forward line with three apiece. The occasion was crowned by a stunning battle in the midfield, with both sides seeing high possessions from familiar names in Gralin, Headless, Giant YoYo, and JT_the_Man, though it was a masterclass by dogs105 in the ruck that proved the difference in this one.

East Side Hawks 12.12.84 defeated Fighting Furies 11.5.71, at The Wally Centre of Excellence.

A game very much determined by momentum, the Hawks were unable to capitalise on their early dominance due to wayward kicking and the lack of scoreboard pressure let the Furies back into the game in impressive fashion in the second quarter who then extended their lead in the third. The Hawks then seemed to remember they had another quarter to play, and stormed home in the fourth, piling on 35 points to the Furies' 7. Tarkyn_24 forgot to pay tribute to/stab in the heart the club whose own goalkicking award is named after him by only kicking 3, while the man who has taken out the Tarks every season since arriving at the Hippodrome in ShaunDuggan managed the same, doing his Fred chances no favours. In a match that was a tight arm wrestle all day there was not really the opportunity for any stand out performances, though boncer34, TY24 , and PorPleaseYa fought valiantly for the Hawks, with Shueygod leading the Furies from the front, backed up by Toump Ass and rfctigerarmy.

3 TY24 2 Shueygod 1 boncer34

Roys FFC 17.16.118 defeated Gold City Royals 13.10.88, at Brunswick Junction Oval.

A fast starting Roys were hauled in during the second quarter by a Royals outfit that refused to yield. Until the third quarter, when their aristocratic sensibilities fell before the red tide of Brunswick Junction's finest, with the Roys hammering home their dominance. Leading the way was TheGoatBaron with an impressive 8.4 to keep himself in the Fred hunt, though his opposing number and the reigning Fred Medallist, Brenton Davy has a day he would not count as one of his finest, scoring only 2.2 in a game decided by weight of shots on goal. The Royals were able to boast an even spread of contributors, with Crimson Azure, GreyCrow, and against his old team, Zevon all able to hold their heads high, though despite being hamstrung by a couple of performances from windyhill and Mooch that belong nowhere near a highlights package, the Roys were able to overcome this and have their forward line enabled by sterling performances from fitzroybowiedog, DERRINALPHIL, and Ed_Gein.

3 royboy2 2 DERRINALPHIL 1 fitzroybowiedog

Las Vegas Bears 10.6.66 defeated by Dragons FFC 12.7.79, at the Stadium in the Sky.

An early lead by the Bears in front of a rabid home crowd was almost entirely cut short by a Dragons team that finished the first quarter on fire, with Bonz getting his kick away just in time to nail a massive goal on the quarter time siren to see the Dragons trail by a point. The momentum continued into the second quarter with the Dragons racing away before the Bears were able to wrest some of it back towards the end of the second, though the Dragons were able to keep holding them off throughout the middle stretches of the game and take a 28 point lead into the final term. A "motivational speech" by tony, who may or may not have had some more "colourful characters" flanking him in the changeroom to hammer home the point saw the Bears lift significantly in the last, and though it was not quite enough to get the job done there was a real noticeable shift in the demeanour of a team that has found some form in the back half of the season. Goals were hard to come by, with Art Vandelay_ having three for the home team and Bonz the same for the visitors, though the Sweet FA's favorite perverted cat did all his best work early on in the piece before losing interest in anyone else (which is incredibly in character). Stand out players were difficult to find in what proved to be quite a dour game, though RonnieRaven, Cap, and Senor M led the Bears comeback, with @milky95 doing all the grunt work with 7 tackles, and Drizzy, Blaze Storm, and the living legend Ljp86 leading the way for the victors.

Baghdad Bombers 16.6.102 defeated Gumbies FFC 10.5.65, at Abdu Prison.

If there's one team that would fail at failing, it would be the Bombers. What would you do to derail a wooden spoon campaign? Pull KohPhi's finger out and trounce the opposition to move within 6 points of second last. The match was a see-sawing affair for the first quarter and a half (so, three eights...), though Baghdad put their foot on the Gumbies' collective throat from then on and did not let up until they could see the plasticine squeezing between their own collective toes. iDon and @mcgrath_truther led the way with three goals apiece, as did GWS Goose for the Gumbies, though the Baghdadians were ably supported by MayTheNorthBeWithU's sterling performance in the ruck, as well as The Sultan, Lunar, snozulu, and norway blue around the ground. For the Gumbies, Brick Loosener, ossie_21, and Mop all battled valiantly against the Black and Red tide.

Coney Island Warriors 13.14.92 defeated Sin City Swamprats 12.7.79, at Van Cortlandt Park.

In a game whose notable feature for its first half was poor kicking, the Swamprats got an early lead and maintained it due to the fact they actually had some goals amongst their rush of behinds. Given the conditions for the match were "warm", with the words "windy", "muddy", "wet", and "overcast" not being used as amusing ways of describing this, it was really interesting how two professional fake football teams could do such amazing impressions of actual professional footballers and miss the literal goal of the game so often. After half time, the Warriors appeared to understand the purpose of the sticks they were kicking towards, and their radar improved sufficiently to accrue a decent score through sheer weight of scoring shots. On the other hands, the Swamprats focused on accuracy rather than scoring, and while the percentage of goals to behinds improved significantly, the percentage of scoring shots relative to their opponents was the casualty, with the Warriors overrunning them with a final quarter tally of 40 points to 18. zackah led the way with 4.4 for Coney Island, and for Sin City Rodney Dangerfield got a little respect with 3, joined on that figure by Power Raid. pantskyle and Tonga Bob led the Warriors' fightback, with spookism and BloodySwan responsible for much of the Swamprats' good work.

Bye: The Ophidian Old Boys' Chancellor Tigerturbulance advises the week was spent refurbishing the parts of Spotswood Academy that have been open to the public due to a few too many liberties taken during the weeks they have hosted some of the less salubrious teams. Notably, there is a suspicion that James Colorado & omgfridge and the Furies have been abusing the wine cellar by replacing rare Bordeaux with cheap goon (to quote Turbo, "those barely sentient plebians probably have three working tastebuds and brain cells between them, and would not even be able to tell the difference!), that GreyCrow & Footypie32 and the Royals have really misunderstood the notion of "throne" when visiting, and that Tonga Bob and the Warriors have been taking violent offense to a few of the academy members who simply asked if they would like to come out and play. The dining hall has required extensive refurbishments since Mobbs and the Roys were served choc mint ice cream for dessert, a serving suggestion which led to "some unpleasantness", and Jabba73 and the Bombers took over the preparatory year's sandpit to install tents and a lewd belly dancing show. The Bears, led by tony's crew of "Strictly Legitimate Businessmen" have been running an off the books bookie operation, and the less said about DragoDelph's Dragons (particularly an excited Bonz and a spam filled Pickitt) the better...
