Most overrated player in the AFL currently?

I remember getting flamed for suggesting he was overrated. I hate being right sometimes.

Great debut season: check
All Australian in his second: check
Excellent third season and first in a new team: check

wow he’s had a quiet season - and even in doing that his numbers at the very least are still excellent.

Why does that trump his other three?

He didn't have an excellent third season, he was OK. If anything until he got injured he was better this year than last. The team he left got better, the team he joined stayed about the same.

I kept hearing how he was Geelong's best mid (he wasn't) and how he would be the missing piece we needed. Just as I suspected he is a pretty good player that slotted in as our 3rd best mid behind Shuey and Yeo.

How can Fyfe be overrated? The guy has won 2 Brownlows, 2 Leigh Mathews Trophys, 3 x AA, 3 x Club Champion.
He just notched up 200 games with 31, a couple of hangers and a goal.
I'd say he's going ok.
Just don’t think he’s the same guy he used to be, and with his poor disposal he’s heavily reliant on his physical talents

He was very good last year. He took a little while to find his feet - in a brand new side - then polled Brownlow votes in five of his next 11 games.
And yes he was our best midfielder in his second season.

Isaac Heeney. Pretty player but doesn’t do enough and doesn’t cop nearly as much scrutiny as DeGoey does or Petracca did.

As I've posted a few times previously, he kicked goals at Geelong. For me that's the big difference.

Calling out a bloke being overrated in his first season 🥴
Cox is talented. But I don’t think anyone thinks he’s particularly impactful at this stage. I don’t think he’s overrated, because no one thinks he’s that good (yet).

Nic Nat owns with thread.
If you are talking media coverage then Nic Nat , hands down , in WA almost needs his own newspaper it’s so over the top .
But if you are talking football ability then sit down because he is an amazing player and we probably won’t get to see anyone like him again for a very long time .

I’m gonna bag the forwards :
JDG
Dixon
Hipwood
Mason Cox
Not much bang for your bucks in that lot .

Tom Stewart is, and he isn't. More accurately, his role is overrated. He's very very good at it but people get carried away with stats in the back half.

Until last week when he was dropped, Josh Rotham was leading the league in marks. There would be fans and media pundits saying 'Josh who?'. You only need to look at the top 10 for marks and kicks to see that playing in defence and touching the ball a lot isn't that hard to do.

Hawks won two without Franklin, the first of which game against Franklin.

I reckon most teams would improve with a prime Lance Franklin.

Hawks were one of the most dominant sides in modern era. Won multiple flags.

Eagles win ONE… WITHOUT Nic Nat.

So now that he’s back playing and the group is largely the same?

Really depends on team balance. Franklin would cost most teams 2 other good players. Losing your 3rd and 4th best mid perhaps could mean your midfield struggles to kick it to him. In other cases he could be the missing piece to success...

Completely agree. Congratulations Mr.Stewart you're a seagull that can mark chip kicks in the backline. Stats in the backline are so overrated. Especially with Geelong brand of possession (and sometimes over possession) football.

Heeney has been mentioned a lot but it is totally justified, i was a huge fan but he just is an okay half forward that is good for mid teens disposals and a goal a game.

He has been called a star/superstar countless times by media/commentators

never polled highly in coaches votes, Brownlow

He is 25 now, he no longer gets a pass as a 'young gun' he is supposed to be coming in to his prime. I still hope he becomes the player i was expecting him to be but damn the media just gotta let the Heeney hype go.

Naitanui is probably leading our B&F and is one vote behind Christian Petracca in the AFLCA award. Pretty standard nomination though.

Is Gary Rohan rated highly enough to be overrated? He's been pretty good for Geelong given they got him for pick 62. With Hawkins and Cameron he isn't really under huge pressure. I would've thought most people would have him in Geelong's bottom 5-10 players. If he had a poor run of form and missed the finals series altogether would it be a big deal?

I feel like beyond having a really good season to date for us, Rohan's going to show his value to Geelong's structure as a player who can play tall or small and generally takes his chances by demonstrating that Cameron's extended absence is more of an inconvenience than being completely devastating. He takes the pressure off Ratugolea, Close and Miers and if the opposing talls put too much focus on the other talls, he can make them pay.

My immediate thought is that he'd be in the top half of our best 22, but to say with certainty whether he sits in the 1-11 group or the 12-22/23 group probably depends on which of Henderson, O'Connor, Parfitt, Menegola, Henry, Blicavs, Kolodjashnij (and others) you'd put him ahead of.

The noise about him is more his uniqueness and what he may be come in the future, a 200cm kid playing on the wing moving the way he does is not something we see.
