Too much height down back for a night game IMO.
One of Grimes, Chappy, Rance or Astbury sits out IMO.

Chappy will be gone soon IMO. If Grimes and Astbury are fit they must be played ahead of him. I'd also like Batch out there too.

Conca isn't ready to play mid yet. He's stealing mid time off Vlastuin and Edwards. Sit him on half back flank in the VFL to gain some confidence.
Vickery to play VFL for first few rounds, even Hampson has shown more this preseason!!
On a good note, McIntosh and Hunt look promising, and Lloyd reminds me of Robbie Gray.

Morris worries me as a forward.

He made a name for himself as a dirty rooter down back who would step on his grandmothers head to get the pill.

He looks a bit out of sorts up near goal. At his age it seems a bum move to try and reinvent a player who does not need reinventing.

Historically it seems to work better the other way.... A forward who is not playing well might be a good option in the back line.

I hope if it does not work the decision is made quickly to put him back where he plays his best footy.

CONS
Norf were more polished and composed
We still look panicky in traffic against good sides
Our tackling was atrocious, made Higgins look like a hard man
Umpiring putrid
Rance putrid
Vickery was Vickery
Conca still meh
Lindsay Thomas is still the biggest cheat in the game
Umpires have done sfa in the offseason to get better at their craft, clearly.

PROS
Grigg was excellent
Fought it out admirably
Some lovely passages and freaky things from our stars
We'll smash Carltank by 10 goals

If you think back to NAB 1 last year against Melbourne, we have improved our game plan 10 fold.
Early on we looked slick and were taking risks and a lot of them were paying off, aside from the odd stupid decision and miss kick.
We applied a hell of a lot more pressure than we did last year, I think North have just had more practice at it than us.
I feel much better about this coming season than last year judging by the way we played today.
Although it is always good to expect more with our growing experience, you can't rest on your laurels.
As long as we never give up and keep fighting even if we are down.

We seemed a bit off the pace at the start of the game, kangas bringing more to the table than we did and understandably they jumped us. We upped our pressure in the second quater and it was a pretty even hit out after that. There were a few occasions where we missed fairly easy shots only to have them run down the other end and kick a goal, scoreboard would have been closer if we took those chances mid game.

We always struggle against their overlap run and it seems that's from players not running back after pressing forward. In fairness to north, they do it well.

I'm not sold on the 3 tall forwards and think we should go with jack + griff for round 1. Another big year ahead for Miles I think, we missed him out there today.

All in all not a bad warm up game, we have ally of improvement left in this squad

Finally had a chance to see the stats and FMD, 27-14 frees norfs way, no wonder I was just laughing in bewilderment at some of the decisions, a free to norf was play on to Richmond and evidenced by the last qtr with players going up too early, jack pinged = norf play on.

Compared to this time 12 months ago our game plan is bang on close to our best footy that can compete with good sides. We were still in experiment mode with 3 talls back and forward, that will be adapted further come R 1 I feel.
Add miles into the mix and we re well placed for the season proper

Spot on , was so flipping frustrating , wtf with rance being flattened front on in a marking contest, the ridiculous marking attempt by turner , cmon how could they miss that

Ok round 1 team

B: Grimes, Astbury, Chaplin
HB: Batchelor, Rance, Houli
C: Ellis, Martin,
HF: Lennon, Griffiths, Deledio
F: Edwards, Riewoldt, Petterd
R: Maric, Miles, Cotchin
Int: Conca, Vlastuin, Grigg
Sub: Hunt

You'll notice a missing position on the wing.

Do we play McIntosh?
Do we play Morris and move Deledio to the wing?
Do we play Morris down back, drop Grimes or Astbury and play Lloyd up forward?
What about Gordon?
What about Lambert?

This selection is hard

Yes let's play Kammy Mac...why the hell not
Lennon was better today but think he hasn't done enough this preseason and won't get a game ..but will soon
Lloyd has to be in the side...he is dangerous...don't want Morris as a forward- back pocket specialist IMO
Question mark over Conca...still looks raw
Think Gordo will be an in depending on how he and Petteed went in the VFL
Reckon Dimma will play Ty as a second ruck option but he doesn't dserve a game

don't want morris as a forward either he doesn't look right there at all....
it seems like we played vickery and griffiths to see who should get a game round 1 griffiths beat vickery by a mile griff actually puts in alot of effort especially on marks vickers only seems to get the easy ones and likes to just jog around not enough effort imo shouldn't play round 1

Fair points man. But I am continually disappointed with his output considering he was a No 6 pick. I know the order in which you are picked becomes irrelevant, but I can't get past it.
Conca is a shocking disposer and a very poor decision maker. He gets it a bit but he Conca the Botcha.

  • Rocketing handballs. This is a pet hate of mine, both from playing and watching football. Rarely is it necessary to hammer the ball at someone who is running beside you within a few metres or standing as a sweeper behind the pack etc. Not sure what causes this, whether it is panic or a lack of judgment...whatever....either way....this caused about 5 or 6 spillages and turnovers today unnecessarily

Exactly. This pissed me off!

Also Hardwick has a hardon for vickery, he will play r1

His clearance work is good. But yes, the negatives on his game as you outlined are correct.

In terms of umpiring who else thought it was ludicrous that dusty was pinged for holding the ball when he fell over and the North player grabbed around his legs? I thought tackling below the waist was illegal.

Next time we meet North Morris has to go back and play on Harvey or Thomas. Different story against Carlton where he is the man to sit on Yarran.

In the battle for the tall forward/2nd Ruck spot Griffiths has pulled away form Vickery. Vickery needs to go back and find form in the VFL.

I think Lloyd has to play, he has not put a foot wrong in the limited time he has got in the last 2 games

We have too many talls in defence when our all Australian full back is playing on Lindsay Thomas. Houli needs more help picking up the crumbs in defence, I thought Vlaustin was poor today but he is too good to leave out round 1. One of Astbury, Grimes, Chaplin or Batchelor probably has to miss out or be able to swing forward to fill Vickery's spot at times during the game. Chaplin or Astbury are the two I would try

Top post. Couldn't agree more.

Having watched him since WAFL, I'm stunned at his lack of progress over the last two years.
I understand that it's early days this year, but he's just about gone backward. He is capable of a laser pass and giving his all in an in and under role, but he seems to be over-thinking things. This goes for a few players and I'm starting to get a little concerned about coaching methods, to be completely honest..

I missed the game. How was Vlastuin? 8 possessions is rubbish. Surely he only played a half? Is he a lock for round one? Think he may be a tad overrated on here at times...
