Enjoyed Hird having to check himself when asked something along the lines of if the AFL will let them have priority if they want to pick up Brown at the end of the season.

That Fantasia goal where he split through traffic was sexy...almost Mer...no I won't say it.

He has got a bit of silk about him young Raz

Thought so when watching him at VFL level and then again last night, he's the closest thing to Mercuri we'll get.

My player ratings, watching from TV not at the game.

- Chapman; Good intensity, good skill, just getting to that age where he moves straight lines and doesn't and doesn't have the speed and maneuverability of a younger man. Will be good when on top, but get found out when beaten.
- Goddard; Good player doing what he needed to get some touch.
- J.Daniher; Solid but not great, forward structure and delivery is a bit over the shop with the random side, so did well to make what he could of it. Improved action but still room to make it better.
- Fantasia; Decent with some really nice patches but still made some young player errors, wont get that many games this year but signs for the future.
- Edwards; Looks like a finisher so will play better when the side is doing well, but stuff to work on. Love his size and directness.
- Laverde; I didn't notice him as much as I should have, not yet familiar enough with his movement to pick him in a crowd.
- Langford; Good signs, looks to do the smart things. Out pointed a could of times, but for a young guy that to be expected. Will be a good player.
- Hams; Got involved without impacting as much as he would like, will improve with a run at it after all his injuries.
- Kavanagh; Possibly the best game he has played for Essendon, still needs to work on his decisions at times but should take confidence from this..
- Baguley; Looked a bit caught out in the structure, trying to take on a bit much and getting caught out at times. A proven quality though so all I care about is his condition, which looks good.
- Zaharakis; Some good moments, just moving towards round 1 for him.
- Giles; Didn't do much, doesn't bother me.
- McKernan; Good aggression, will be able to do something if he is needed this season, better than Daniher or Carlisle being forced there.
- Brown; Good, solid.
- C.Jones; Would still be playing AFL if he was a few years younger, no one will take him on at his age now though.
- Ashby; Good game, will get found out at AFL level with his size and errors at the moment in my view, but will take confidence and should kick on in the VFL and be decent when needed for the seniors.
- Gleeson; Quality, quality, quality. Smart, poised, and unafraid. Would be a lock for me if he had the body, but should still play a decent bit for the AFL side this year regardless.
- Dalgleish; Good highlights but still needs to get in to the game a bit more, should take this confidence and really kick on in the VFL and maybe push for a game or two.
- Ambrose; Did well around the ball using his body, but was missing a bit up forward. Hard to know if it was just the demands of the side though, didn't look to be playing his normal role from 2014.
- Marigliani; Looks composed but just doesn't do enough.
- Cooney; Did enough to get condition and shows he can still play. Not looking like Brownlow form though Hirdy...
- Gwilt; I don't mind him, but not sure I'm seeing much that has him in the best 22, fringe for me.
- J.Merritt; Faded significantly, still a lot to work on, just cant get himself involved enough.

From the list of youngsters:
Langford, Laverde, Z.Merrett, Fantasia, Gleeson, Ashby, Edwards and Dalgleish will all play AFL for many years.
Not sure yet on McKenna, Long, Hams, NOB, Kavanagh, J.Merrett, Steinberg, Browne and Aylett.
Bolded are the ones I think will eventually prove themselves to be regulars

How is Laverde in the first category with that game? J Merrett has been far more impressive over the 3 games and in actual AFL games.

You're right Laverde barely did anything but watching the replay i am confident there is quality in him. Also, just because of the hype...
Probably a bit harsh on J.Merrett but his form was scratchy after the first couple of rounds last season. His second season in the forward line was great though. I'd like to see a greater impact in midfield from him

Top effort that, especially for those of us who haven't seen any nab games :(

I feel like that game vindicates my faith in the guys drafted between 2011 and 2013 ('the next generation') and, as Hird said in his post match presser, the way in which they have been developed. I still feel like we are really biding out time until these guys develop before EFC will do real damage to the competition.

I am going to get so impatient (and frustrated) waiting for Gleeson, Dalgleish and Fantasia to become mainstays (throw in Langford and Laverde too but obviously they're only a collective 4 games of senior footy into their careers). I suppose the problem with Gleeson and Fantasia, in particular, is that they are not players that have the natural physical development that allows for 18 games + finals so building them up necessarily becomes a slow burn (and while I've said it a few times I don't think it can be said enough: there is literally no flaw in their respective game except for their paper thin builds).

Very happy to see Kav get his hands dirty with an extended run in the middle. It is no coincidence that the game in which he took O'Brien's spot in the middle was the game in which he looked most comfortable. Would not have thought he has done enough for round 1 but he's shown he can be a player. I just hope the club understands that he is mid 1 in the VFL and stop stuffing around with O'Brien in close.

As many have already pointed out McKernan was really good when he came on. Really threw his weight around and was influential around the ball (which was important because we were getting chopped up in close for a bit). Maybe Giles just lacks the competitive spirit, he must be getting close to playing himself out of round 1 contention (if he was ever there) as he has been horrible for two weeks in a row now and surely he has to be at the top of his game if we are going to go into AFL matches that top heavy.

The use of Ambrose was interesting. Being thrown into the ruck aside he was basically a small on the day.
Laverde, Langford, Goddard and Daniher were the forwards.

Only other player I want to mention is Daniher. He's a total freak who is going to dominate the competition for years to come) The Lloyd modeled run up is sexual. Very happy that he was able to get separation from McDonald on the lead a few times as I thought that overall mobility could be an issue for Danhier but he got away from McDonald (who I think together with McKenzie is probably the best defender of a leading key forward in the game).

Very happy that Fantasia, Gleeson, Kavanagh and Dalgleish were the standouts.

As for Melbourne I like the look of Hogan who looks like more of a traditional full forward (but without the limitations of the players who have similarly played as traditional full forwards and not really fit well into modern footy). He reminds me a lot of what I can remember of Dunstall, an absolute powerhouse and impossible to beat on the lead. Should have kicked 4 or 5 last night.

Frost is also a really interesting player. He certainly finds himself in the right spot a lot and has all of the raw attributes you could want. Don't think you can overstate the extent to which a swap of him and pick 3 for an uninterested Frawley is a win.

I was looking forward to watching Toumpas but two moments of pure class aside he was non-existent.
