NAB Cup: Rd 4 Western Bulldogs Vs Geelong @ Simmons Stadium

Laughing at the Geelong supporter who felt the need to come on to our board to tell us that Geelong won. They won by what 7 points against a bunch of kids at their home ground. Be very afraid Geelong I would be.

To the silly old duck that just rang sen from werribee claiming we will finish bottom 4, get a clue  dogs supporter aswell

kb has us 13th
I couldn't believe that either. We have shown more than enough this year to probably finish about 8-10 which is very good considering we are going into a rebuild.

Still, such biased commentary on SEN. I had to put up with it since K-Rock would probably be even worse.

I don't want us to be good enough to just make the finals, I want us to bottom out, and pick up guns who will WIN us a premiership.

Our existence is to win premierships - not just compete - get ride of that old Footscray thinking.

True, I'd much prefer for us to bottom out for two years so that we can grab some great kids. We have a midfield with very strong signs of being great which is just lacking that one outside mid, a forward line that does show potential and some real quality down back.

Sorry the Data proves that theory wrong

Just got back from the game. Good to go to a game of footy again :thumbsu: Im happy with how we played though. I sat right behind the interchange gates too, so it was good to see and hear the little things down there.

Geelong used the ball very well through the middle of the ground. That's where they got us the most. Long kicks from the centre deep into their forward line didn't help either.
Scarlett was his usual dirty self, at one point he grabbed Wallis by the neck from behind. It was pretty well hidden, but it was right in front of me, so I had a good view.

For us, Griff was doing great until he got injured. What gives me hope is he didn't have any ice or strapping on it after he came off, from what I saw. Didn't look like he could move it very well though.
Higgins' kicking was awful. First half especially. It got better later on though. I lost count the amount of times he shanked it.
Wallis was the same. Kicking was very bad.

Picken played a great game, and loved him getting stuck into a few of the cats players. Especially Scarlett, the filthy bastard.

I really liked Howard's game. It looks like he has worked on his physicality a fair bit. Stuck a couple of good tackles, and did some good body work.

Jones had a very quiet day. Lonergan played really well on him.

Loved seeing Cooney show some good form. His run down the wing was like the Cooney of old.

I wasn't as happy with Zeph as a couple are. Every contest he looks like he wants to go for a specky, and he doesn't run to the right spots. He didn't lay any tackles either, when he had a lot of chances to do so.

Roughy, Cordy and Minson all had pretty good games. I still have Roughead ahead of Cordy in terms of round 1. His presence is a big factor when he is down in the forward line, a lot more than Cordy anyway. But all 3 of them played good games.

Dickson is in the round 1 side for me. Very impressed with his game. Tackled well, ran to the right spots, and was kicking pretty well. A good all round game.

Lake was only ok. Did a few good spoils, didn't seem to be going for his marks much. He was often way too slow in pushing back as well.

Just a few thoughts from the game.

We only need a bottom 4 finish this year to capitalise on the uncompromised draft and we’ll climb again. If things look like they’re going too well we can always play Mulligan.

Bottoming out doesn't win flags, a winning culture wins flags

This is generally true though I don't object to the playing field being levelled this year

Collingwood and Hawthorn were rubbish in '04 & '05. Their draft picks helped greatly

Not that I want the Bulldogs to bottom out, we need to be competitive :footy:

Geelong were lucky in that they gained a load of Father Sons before the rule change.
Collingwood gained Thomas and Pendlebury (picks 2? and 5?) from a bad year about 5 years ago.
Hawthorn definitely bottomed out. Picked up Franklin, Roughead, Lewis etc etc to show for it as well

Not such a bad result; they only really beat us in the 3rd quarter. We broke even in the first half and won the last quarter

Good that Grant was able to get into the game in the second half too :thumbsu:

Went to the match will post my full match thoughts tomorrow but need to let off my chest two things.

Mitch Wallis - counted 4 turnovers in 1 quarter, not even close to being up to it.

Shaun Higgins - Same old same old.

Hope macca puts him back to the 2nds seriously there will be another NO MORE EXCUSES article in the HUN next preseason:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Higgins - 24 D, 8 cp, 16 up, 67% de, 8 m, 3 clearances, 81% tog, 96 dreamteam points.

Two guys at the game say his game was pretty ordinary while his stats show a pretty reasonable game.
Honestly dont know what to make of this!

Listening to the SEN broadcast, didnt hear Lake or Hargrave called between 1/2 time and halfway through the last qtr. Did they get near it, run out of puff or what.
For a time i thought they'ed been subbed off.

Hargrave hurt his foot for a bit. Limped off. I think it was near the end of the 3rd quarter. He came back on later though, so that would explain the lull in his name being called.

Lake was fairly quiet though.

Excuse me coming on here. Only did so to see how my 'local' team got on today against a hated foe.

Please allow my 2 bobs worth.

A club with a successful/winning culture can afford to bottom out.
A club without a S/W culture simply cannot.

The culture at the Dogs in recent years has in my opinion improved. To bottom out with the blessing of the supporters/admin/coaches/players would be detrimental to say the least.

The dogs are actually not dissimilar to the 'hated foe' (cats) of the early 00's.
Regular finalists. Exciting brand of footy. etc etc They have just won their 3rd flag in 5 years. All without bottoming out!!

If you finish this season challenging the finals against the odds it will be a pass.
If you die out meekly in the interest of draft picks it could be diabolical, because at the end of the day your potential superstar draft picks will just be joining a club with a shit culture and will thus progress accordingly.

I always want the hawks to win, but having worked in the west for 20+ yrs and lived in it for 10+, I make no secret of wanting to be part of the party if and when youse get over the line.

Bottoming out imo will only make me far too old to make the most of that party.:(

lol'd.

Also agree with MB above. Bottoming out would be bad for us, however tempting it may be.

i was pleased with the game with the youngsters and all, but what pissed me off ( and there is probable reasons for it including griff and Dal not playing the 2nd half ) but it jacked me off something chronic that we didnt rise to the challenge in the 3rd quarter when Cats turned the screws on us. We have to make a stand...... FFS ! i know its only a practise game, but when are we going to stop bending over and taking it up the clacker from this mob down the highway ???? Surely it has to change soon? It has been driving me nuts from the early part of the 1990's ! So many disappointing losses in big finals games.....

we play this game to win premierships, and i for one wont be satisfied until we accomplish that task, so finishing 2nd best, or making prelims is not going to cut it for me !
