Re: Player Review - Brisbane v. St Kilda

As a general rule though xplo, you'd have to agree that skill and/or speed based players are disadvantaged in wet conditions.

To be honest, no don't agree, POBT.

I think as a rule the better players are still better. They change their expectations and adjust their games because they are better.

Black is our best onballer and was still our best onballer in a sea.

Fair enough - we'll have to agree to disagree. Yours is an interesting viewpoint and not one that I've heard expressed much before. I thought it was fairly well accepted that wetter conditions suit your "in and under" types, defenders and taggers but I can see your viewpoint.

Good stuff jackson...somes it up pretty well.

Just managed to watch the game today. Conditions were amazing and hard to get a real feel for how the team is going. Lacked any sort of structure in the 1st half and into the 2nd but good effort in the end.

I thought Brennan actually did allright, mopped up well as a loose man in defense early on. Looked to almost be suited to the wet and one of the few with clean hands, but of course as said before let down by his kicking, which were made worse by the conditions. Last year often just through the ball on to his boot like he got bored with out any direction but it was the right idea in the wet to kick the ball down the ground as quickly as you can...but was very wayward.

Thought Moody was good and looked damaging on occasions. Black stepped up in the 2nd half and was just about the best.

Also agree with you Grim about Patful. Had a very good game. Also Sherman looked the most likely of everyone once sent forward. Good move.

Re: Player Review - Brisbane v. St Kilda

After seeing the game I wondered how people would judge Brennan's game. One minute he looks so balanced and skillful, the next minute he looks completely unco. I'm glad he is getting some positive comments, because all in all I thought he had a pretty good game.
I liked it a lot...Another one of those glimpses into the player he could become...

Will be one of the interesting ones to watch this week. Has he made progress, or will we all be shaking our heads?

Second half of the review...sorry about the delay.

In response to a few of the comments i believe wet weather makes life even harder for a small forward, they rely on quick feet, one touch pick ups, and kicking goals accuratley from limited opportunities all of which are made difficult by wet weather. In saying that I thought McGrath was outplayed by Kiel when both were playing a similar role at differing stages
Ha Ha and no I am not Andrew Hamilton ! Or am I.....

21 Merrett - Impressive. Obviously the conditions suited backmen but he played tight, backed himself and imposed him self on the contest all of which are barometers of good key defenders

24 Patfull - Quite Good. Was surprised to see him go forward but I think he at the very least earnt a pass mark. Didnt look out of place and will be ineteresting to see how he goes in the dry when as a key forward he has to take contested marks

25 Mills - Very Good. I was really impressed, played with good aggresion and dash. His lack of skills didnt stand out as much due to the weather but like Merrett seems to be growing into the role. Real test will be when he comes up against the elite forwards.

30 Copeland - Terrific. Everything you would expect from him. Hard, tough didnt give an inch and really led from the front. Still not convinced he is a midfielder in his own right, but there is not too many better taggers out there.

31 Wood - Okay. Was solid without being great. Tended to beat Rix in the ruck but Matt Clarke had his measure. Still developing and with Charman, Beau etc around him will only strive to improve. Worth perservering with

32 Stiller - Okay. Was fairly quiet early but did some nice things late. Is not a bash and crasher, likes his space so the conditions werent to his advantage but still never shirks the issue. Will be good to see him and Lappin in the same side

35 Rishcitelli - Good. Always hard at it and a terrific tackler he probably needs to win a little more ball to take that extra step up into a very good midfielder but i think he will get there. Doesnt seem to be rushed even in close which is a good sign

37 Sheldon - Quiet. Didnt do a great deal but did a couple of nice things when given the opportunity. Still a way away yet i feel

40 Hamill - Quiet also. Did some good things late but was barely spottedearly. Is still coming along but I am not firmly convinced either way yet.

42 Allan - Quiet. I thought the conditons would suit his in and under style and lack of leg speed but was very quiet. Needs to pull something out this week if he plays or could be in trouble. My personal opinion is still that he has the goods and could be something

43 Kiel - Good. Not fantastic but seem to hit the right spots as a small forward and worked hard to keep the ball in. Probably will start the season behing McGrath and Hooper but I dont think he will end it there

46 Begley - Good. Hard to believe he is still learning the game. Ran hard, used the ball okay in the conditions. With a few more AFL level games in him, could well develop into a good running half-back/wing.

I hope I havent forgotten anyone

On the whole I thought the most pleasing thing was that the Lions werent prepared to just sit back lose this one and blame the conditions. Even when they had a few kicked on them early the fire was still there to make something of the game. Add in Brown, Bradshaw, Clark etc into the forward line and it might not be quite as gloomy as all of the 'leading' AFL pundits make out
