(Thanks CousinJed for TV coverage info)

In round 1 of the NAB Cup, both sides had close wins against preliminary finalists from 2008 and would be pretty happy with their efforts.

This is a battle of 10th v 12th from last year's premiership but both sides would have higher aspirations than that with finals an achievable goal. I've made the point that I think Brisbane must make the finals to be seen to have progressed whilst I believe Essendon to be still in a more developmental mode. Bombers supporters have disputed this but I would contend that it is a great place to be as a club. In terms of a 5-8 year picture, I would argue that Essendon is possibly the best placed club in the comp - there's real depth on their list with recent top draftees like Ryder, Gumbleton and Myers still to hit their straps. Essendon have is exciting youngsters across every line plus a healthy dose of young and not so young veterans.

Michael Voss would have been satisfied with the endeavour and the competitiveness of his side last week under some duress with the total absence of a ruckman or a goal kicker of note. Pleasingly, the young brigade from the last 4 years of drafts really stepped up. Not so pleasingly, there wasn't a really strong contribution from the "middle tier", although Brennan was a noticeable exception. This week Voss will be looking for more from the likes of Adcock, Sherman, Selwood etc.

Ones to Watch

Tom Collier - If there was one outstanding and yet slightly unexpected performance from Brisbane's first NAB Cup match, it was the game this Taswegian played. The potential was there and his pre-season training looked to be top notch but it was still pleasing to see him put it together. Playing off half back, Tommy C took the opposition on with a straight line running, linking performance that has probably lifted him into the first choice back 6. I'd like to see him match up on a tall opponent this week to see if he is capable of playing as a 3rd tall.

Bradd Dalziell - If there was ever any concern that Dalziell's career start was a flash in the pan, the first NAB Cup game dispelled that. It is a sign of his standards that 25+ possies barely rates a mention these days. The fact is that this guy is racking up the sort of statistics that are normally reserved for the elite midfielders of the competition. A slight improvement in the hurt factor of his disposals and he'll be the complete mid.

Lachlan Henderson - Was the only tall defender of note against a depleted St Kilda forward line but was rarely beaten on the night. With Vossy's pursuit of a genuine sized centre half back, Hendo has the opportunity to secure a spot for the season proper. I have him as "one to watch" because Essendon has the likes of Lucas, Lloyd, Gumbleton and Neagle all available to play - if Hendo is going to make a name as a defender, this is a good place to start.

Scott Gumbleton - The excitement following Essendon's game against the Bulldogs was palpable, and quite rightly so. It would be fair to say that Essendon supporters have had an anxious wait for Gumbleton to hit the senior ranks and he showed a fair bit in the first round of the pre-season comp. He looks to be a geniune centre half forward in an era when that position is increasingly occupied by 188cm midfielders. Tall forwards take time and a good season this year from Gumby will mean that he is on track with his development.

Courtney Dempsey - Another one who has made the Bombers wait a little while but this guy is made for modern footy. Quick and elusive, I've seen that he has played as a half back flanker but would suggest that he's capable of playing all over the ground.

Paddy Ryder Still very young but holds down a tall defensive position with aplomb. The exciting thing about him is that we are yet to see the outstanding attacking abilities he has. Could very well redefine centre half back, move back into the ruck as a mobile tall or even supplement that already strong Dons forward line. My prediction is that Ryder will really start to be noticed by the general AFL community this year.

I agree mate, I think Collier should do well, I played against him a few times down south. He has alot of potential.

Also Sammy Lonergan for the Dons should carve up, I went to college with sammy and played along side him for a bit, he certainly has put the puscle on, and will certainly be noticed this season, hope he does well.

Im really looking forward to watching Brennan.

I was really impressed with his whole game against the Saints, want to see if he can back it up.

To think if he could rest up forward and actually be a regualr goal kicking threat on top of his clearance work that he has shown, would be such a dangerous player.

I wouldn't mind Brennan playing permanently in the midfield. If he can get his endurance up there and put it all together, he's just going to be so valuable in the clearances. He's already become somewhat of a 4th quarter specialist, and has shown he has matchwinning ability from the midfield, one of the areas we were poorest in for the past couple of years. He can still get on the scoresheet by kicking goals running from the midfield, or occasionally sneaking forward to create mismatches. A 25-30 goal output from him this year would be good enough, playing as a midfielder.

We've got more than enough tall forward options, let Brennan stay where he's played his best consistent football.

I could not live without foxtel.:thumbsu:

Good to see ch7 showing it on the HD channel now at a reasonable time. A decent compromise IMO, hope it continues for the season proper. How much does a HD set top box cost these days??

There is a whisper that Brennan may not play...

Leunberger, Roe, Patfull and Austin all likely to be included

I have to disagree with POBT here. I think Essendon is probably the most poorly place club to jump into the 8 and compete in the next few years. They have too many fringe 22 type players and no out and out stars coming through to replace the ones they lost. Their midfield makes ours look like the fab 4 come again.

Houli is probably the only one I rate at all but as with a few of our youngsters he cannot keep on the park. Gumbleton has great endurance but poor pace and yet it seems as though he will be used close to goal. Myers I am reserving judgement on for now. Prior to being drafted I thought he was a pretty reasonable prospect and he certainly has potential although I am yet to see him show he is going to be a star (good player probably). Ryder is pretty reasonable defensively but offers not much else. Pears I like but is a little too short and Hurley is another of their bigs who has serious pace issues. Dempsey can't keep on the park and I did not think he showed that much in round 1.

Where I think they are well placed is in the ruck where Hille is probably the number 2 ruck in the competition. I am hoping Leuey plays this week so we can see him up against the top competition. Bellchambers was also a good get for Essendon and is developing very nicely for such a young ruck especially one take as low as he was.

For the DT/SC watchers out there keep an eye on Myers, Gumbleton, Houli, McPhee and Skipworth from Essendon.

From the Lions I would love to see:

- Jed take a step back in the right direction.
- Leuey hold his own as the number 1 ruck.
- Proud get a game. Not sure what the situation is there.
- Harding build on his good outing up forward.
- Clouston show us some more of what he did at the end of last year.
- Collier continue his form and demand a round 1 spot.
- Clark dominate up forward.
- The Lions have a win so we can all continue to watch them on TV.

Thanks for that Cousin Jed :thumbsu:

We just got a HD TV - bought it earlier than we meant to cos of footy season

Why can't they show it live on 7HD? Do people really need to watch crap like Better Homes and Gardens in HD? Watch the SD version of it ffs. Channel 7 are soft.

I have to disagree with POBT here.

I think you've underrated all of the players you listed following this statement. I believe that Neagle, Ryder and Gumbleton are 200 game talls. If you have 3 of those in your side, chances are you've got a pretty good base to work with. I have no doubt that all three will fall into the "very good player" category, at the least. I am even more bullish about the prospects of Ryder and Gumbleton who both have a ton of potential. I won't make a comment on Hurley yet but I note that they have plenty of other talls - presumably they'll score a win or two there in terms of turning them into performers. I am a strong believer that quality in key positions is the best way to build a squad - and I see Essendon's KP stocks to be high quality.

I also really like the midfielders they've picked up over the past few years. I still believe that midfield is perhaps one or two stars short but, as I have advocated with our list, picking a quality mid is a far easier prospect to top off your list.

I don't expect that they'll challenge for a premiership in the next 2 or 3 years. They may even go backwards at some point. But they're on the right track development wise to be a very strong squad when the group they have matures - when their core is in the 23-28 year old age group, they'll be very strong.

While I don't entirely agree with you... it's a preety well rounded opinion!

Quite refreshing to come here and see people talking with some sense!

Oh and POBT.... shhhhhhhhhhhhhh! ;)

May the better team win. But, more importantly, let's hope both teams find out something about themselves and walk away with no injuries!!!!

I could not live without foxtel.:thumbsu:

Definitely:thumbsu:

I got sick of having to go the Manningham or a pub to watch the Lions so I went out and got it for this season! It'll be nice to watch it in the comfort of my own home instead of having to squint at a TV screen 20 meters away.

Apparently it's not permitted during the season proper because of anti-siphoning (sp?) laws...

Why is it against anti-siphoning (??) if 7 have the rights to friday night footy, and then 7hd can play it at a reasonable time. I thought those laws were designed to stop sport being exclusive to pay tv kind of thing.

It is like 9HD playing the AFL Footy Show at 9.30pm in Queensland.

The anti-siphoning laws were introduced to prevent Pay TV networks bidding directly with the AFL (and other Australian 'cultural' events) in a bid to keep them accessible to everybody, no matter their financial status. 7 can show the games live on their HD channel should they so desire because they have the rights to broadcast AFL matches, which is my understanding of the laws (although I'm not an expert in Federal Law:p).

They can't show games on their HD channel before their main channel during the regular season, Josh is correct.

This is the best link I can find

But AFL games are contractually unable to be shown on the multi-channels after their first screenings on Ten's main channel.

The US Masters is on the Government's anti-siphoning list, which protects viewer access to major events on flagship free-to-air channels, and must be first screened on the main channel before the multi-channels.

Thanks for the correction, Cousin Jed:thumbsu: I didn't realise HD channels were the same as Pay TV.

Personally I find this very irritating considering the Government is trying to get everybody onto digital TV in the next few years so you'd think one way of weaning people of analogue is to sway them to get HD so they can watch these things live.
