Guess we have to trust Wells, no talls is a strange one though.

Wish them all the best of luck and welcome to the cats.

I'm sure we are all surprised at no talls. I guess from a list perspective

Schroeder - Djerkurra
Guthrie - Hogan
Smedts - Milburn
Horlin Smith - Ablett :D

After intial anger, I have mellowed somewhat on pur picks.

I am staggered we passed on Isaac, and in particular Atley, who is a dead set gun, for Smedts.

Guthrie is a very very good player and 23 is about value. Obviously, like some of us called earlier in the year, Wells considers we don't have a replacement for Ling, and Guthrie will be that. He can also play as a small defender if need be, which is another thing we need and don't have. By all reports has really good endurance, works really hard, and has good leadership potential, which we like.

Horlin-Smith is the smokey everyone wanted. I thought Brisbane would take him at 32. I would still have wanted Luke Parker, but who knows, Horlin Smith is an underage cricket star so has played very little footy, and henceforth has a lot of upside.

Schroder looks like a good get as a midfielder and has some real hardness.

For me while the 4 players we've added look to be reasonably good, and not massive overpays, my disappointment is that we have 2 key needs of more pace, and a quality tall defender, and we've addressed neither in this draft. I would think our three picks in the rookie draft must go to these areas. I can't help but be nervous because I don't have confidence that what we have, particularly in the talls, is sufficient.

Will try and chase down some names for possible rookies I like.

No idea and l doubt any of us do really. A little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing....l will stick with the bloke who a) has built us a premiership with sensational drafting b) works full time to see/cover all the relevant players in the draft.

Our midfield selections from those drafts those years ago were critical in winning us our flags. And the importance of the midfield utility type only grows in the modern game.

l whole-heartedly welcome the boys to the club and will wait to see how they go on the track.

We are not totally without talls.
Forward:
Hawkins, Brown, Vardy & Ben Johnson on top of older guys Mooney & Pods.

Defense:
Longergan, Taylor, Scarlett, Gillies and maybe Drum

We could do with a couple of KP defenders but it's not a disaster, Particularly if Scarlett hangs around for a few more years.

This talk about no talls is weird to me.

Backline:

Scarlett - doesnt play tall any more.
Milburn - doesnt play tall any more.

Young defenders - Taylor, Lonergan, Gillies, Drum and T.Hunt on a flank.

Forwards:

Ok, Mooney is one - we have Hawkins (22?), Brown (19/20?), Pods (29), Vardy (19) and maybe B.Johnson (23?) as well. Considering where the game is going and we won 2 flags with Mooney and under-developed Hawkins/N.Ablett as our only 2 big forwards, its not that bad.

Gee we could of had Atley and Parker, interesting. We all trust in Wells though so onwards and upwards.

I agree.

Wow, Atley, Guthrie and Parker would have been amazing.

You wait til Jester sees it.

I have to disagree...Lonergan is a stop gap, neither Gillies nor Drum have done much to fill us with confidence, Mooney will be gone in 12 months and Pods and Scarlett within 3 years, Brown has the durability of a twig, and Hawkins well who knows.

And that doesn't even talk about the ruck stocks too.

We are definitely thin on talls, both numerically and quality.

Having said that, if Wells doesn't rate the talls in this draft, maybe it was the right strategy and maybe we'll have to get all talls in 2012 like Carlton just did now.

At least some good talls like Josh Walker and co will still be available for the rookie draft...I'll post up some names after dinner.

Scott is on.

What he's saying:

-Billie-modern midfielder...height, speed, agility, ball use

-Guthrie-really happy, hardness

-Horlin-Smith-don't know a lot about him, but huge amount of talent. Development left in him especially phsyically. Skills very good which we like.

-Schroder-inside mid, extremely impressed about winning ball in close and using it effectively.

-Says we wanted players who play the Geelong way (pointed out Schroder's hardness) and said we didn't get a tall, but will look at it at some stage (seems to hint talls in rookie draft to me).

Just because that worked for us once...doesn't mean it will again, is all I'm sayin'.

We certainly are placing a hell of a lot of faith in Lonergan, Gillies, Drum and Brown and Vardy now, that's for sure.

I'm glad we got Wells on the pay roll.

Sorry PO but smedts will make you look like a goose.

I like Smedts, I just love Atley. Smedts is class, but Atley is a jet. Oh well, we could always bribe the Eagles not to draft Andreoli as a rookie.

But yes, in Wells we trust.

Well who says that any of the talls in this draft were any better prospects than them? Why waste a draft pick on a player just cos he is tall?

As for the Atley bloke you keep going onnnnn and onnnnn about, i dont know squat about the bloke but dont u think there might be a reason why he slid down that low? These are the best recruiters in the land and they all passed on him for 16 picks.

Got to say I am really pleased with this draft. The first 3 picks in particular (don't know anything about Schroder) appear at this early stage to be very good types. All have great disposal, can get the footy and with Smedts and Guthrie are very useful overhead.

All have good frames to develop into (Schroder needs to trim down!!). Wells likes taking mids that will be able to handle finals pressure. Smedts and Guthrie are cool under heat.

Very very good draft.

All I can say is, thank **** the hawks got i. smith and not us.
(well I might have taken him at 37 ;) )
