The reason Reid didn’t go as high as the others who played midfield to the sort of level that he did this year was reportedly because some clubs see him as more of a small forward at AFL level, so you may have addressed that need without realising it.
funny you say that. he gives me Mark LeCras vibes. same height and size, football smarts and talent by foot and decision, likes kicking goals if within range.

I'm sure the club realise it, it's just us on BigFooty that are catching up!
Yeah and I think it’s the same re Travaglia for us. I very highly doubt we got him to play across HB long term.

He played good footy in the midfield this year in the Coates League and models himself very closely on Will Day, who transitioned from HB to midfield really well. He’s even being mentored by him.

I'd say he was very very near the very top of our draft board. You should be happy.

Looking at the draft and the names taken after him, it definitely seems like Reid was the last of the "tier 1" names available if that makes sense (I say tier 1 other than the top handful). Hotton, Reid, Allan and Berry were all rated about the same by the various experts, and there seems to be a drop off in the names and expected ranges from 18 onwards. I'd say as soon as Richmond picked that key forward Freo were happy they were getting one of the 3 guys left in that group

Reading Bell's comments on what the team needs and others have said it, would we be looking at a running HBF with our next pick? Who's there?

Clarke, Jaques, Bice…

Or we draft a small forward and I get my wish of Simpson being moved to half back.

We were very fortunate to be the ones to benefit from the ‘deep draft’ the most.

Richmond did us a massive favour going tall at Pick 12, meaning we got the last of the group of ‘top 10 in any other year’ players that draft watchers were saying about this year. Our pick was the very edge of that range.

Realistically that nullifies the ground we conceded on the Bolton trade; Murphy was as good as anyone else left at our original Pick 10.

Yep these guys plus I read we've shown interest in Jaxon Artemis with a late pick
Not content with a Norse god, we want a Greek one too

Second round onwards is when Walls starts pulling rabbits out of hats. Expect a selection that we have never heard. (possibly from a state league). In his defence, he's done bloody well identifying talent with late picks over the last few years if you consider the likes of Shultz, Switta, Freddy, Treacy, Meek, Cox, Ryan, Walker ect. On par with Sydney as the best use of late round picks in the comp IMO.

I dunno .
Midfield is not the issue with Norf. They’ve invested heavily there and don’t give enough opportunity to Will Phillips as it is.
Why you wouldn’t take Tauru at 2 and the try and get back in for a midfielder at a cheaper rate later I don’t know. That keeps F1 intact
Yep,
I would have swapped pick 2 & F2 for 7 & 8 with the Saints. Flip pick 8 for two late picks in the 20's. Get Tauru & then a couple of KPP's in the early 20's and keep their F1.

I don't think a deal like the one North did has ever turned out well. The pressure on the kid becomes a weight on their shoulders.

Don't agree on priorities, you cant reach for things that aren't there in the first round.

All in on Pickett to fill the final void in this team.
Hannaford went the next pick after ours so he wasn't a huge reach. I think we just couldn't go past best available.

If we get Pickett, all is forgiven.

I might be a bit silly but sometimes a player can a certain role in juniors and another role at seniors.

Talent is talent.
He's been a goalkicker at juniors. I'd be more than happy if he cracks a debut in our forward line with some midfield rotation. Great place to develop.

Someone made the best point on the Bolton trade, it does look annoying and weird from Richmond. They would have gotten Faull at our pick given Port were never once linked to him. So all they did was cost us Berry and them a future 3rd for no reason

On Reid, I think we'll get him and Simpson into our HFFs pretty quick and repurpose other players like Freddie and Switta. That elite decision making and execution at half-forward will transform the team.
.
This is pretty exciting I reckon, and I agree it seems like the best pathway for those two.

I think it is more the third round and later picks 4th/5th/rookie that he plucks some gems. Excluding the MSD which to be put frankly we have sucked at.

He is more conventional when it comes to 2nd round: Luke Valente, Nathan O’Driscoll, Matthew Johnson, Hugh Davies, Cooper Simpson, Ollie Murphy. Best available really. He has even upgraded a few times in the second round (Valente, NOD, Simpson) to lock in a preferred target that has slid. I’d expect the same for our second pick tonight. Either hold and pick best available like Ollie Murphy or upgrade as appropriate a few spots using a Future draft pick.
