I remember mid last year Collingwood supporters at my club (and sadly there are many) baying for Malthouse's blood saying "we can't ever win a premiership with Malthouse as coach. How can you win a premiership playing around the boundary line.... look at Geelong, playing through the corridor".

They now say less than 12 months later he is a genius and the games best coach (and then I remind them he is finished this year). It is this week, my only joy.

Voss will be judged on this years development. Last weekend, he lost the credits of the first 5 weeks. I still think he will survive and still hope he does.

I actually thought Malthouse's failing at the pies was that he was just too loyal to some guys who I had failed to show much. I'm happy to admit I was wrong - very wrong and he developed a game plan and a very deep group of players with a very even level of ability who can be swapped and changed but essentially nothing changes - they always play to their structures.

They remind me of Chelsea under the special one when they won the back to back titles. I played a tape of a game and blacked out the score, turned the sound down and asked them to tell me who they thought was winning.

The boys all said Chelsea, but they were actually 1-0 down during the period of play and it was late in the game. The point I was trying to make was that despite the scoreboard they never wavered from the "structures" or game plan. If you did the same with Collingwood you find many similarities.

If Vossy can develp a game plan and the guys can commit to it and stick to it you can turn things around very quickly, Geelong, Collingwood even an outfit called Brisbane proved this in the early 2000's.

Speaking of vomit emoticons, I really could have used one, when reading M&B's revisionist history of the first half of 2001.

Unless I'm living in an alternative reality, I can assure readers that at several points of time in Season 2001 there were many vehement and vitriolic calls for the sacking of Leigh Matthews on the "old" Brisbane Lions Forum.

Especially after the 83 point loss to the Blues in Round 8.....followed closely by an agonizing loss to the Crows at the Gabba a week later.

Oh they were "exciting" times alright

4-5, a couple of terrible losses, the all conquering Bombers to play the next week and a list that was looking average at best!

The "anticipation" was there alright...anticipation that we would finish well and truly in the bottom half of the comp, that we were going backwards and that it would be at least 3 seasons before we could mount any sort of serious challenge for a top 4 berth , much less a Flag.

I don't agree with much of that, and I don't consider "Maroon and Blue's" recollections to be revisionist at all. In fact, I think many other people's posts on here would amount to a revisionist view of 2001, if they're implying that a handful of nutcases on the old Lions forums (many of whom were multiple aliases) calling for Matthews' sacking constitutes anything similar to the predicament in which we are now in.

Go back to the drawing board, mate!

I was not on the old Lions board so am unable to comment but am far from being revisionist as to our postion after round 9 2001. It was 4 wins and 5 loses. I watched us get belted on TV by Carlton and was at the game we lost to the Crows. If you, after the game we lost to the crows, had said that we were going on to a definite flag that season your talents are wasted around here.

As far as I can see people have used the phrase to illustrate the point that teams can turn a corner in the space of one game not that this team will somehow magically become as good as the threepeat team.

Mate, I wouldn't have said that we were "definitely" going to win the flag on Grand Final eve.

However, even after Round 9, I still would have expected us to make the finals, in either the top 6 or top 4.

Thats hardly what he's saying.

I don't really see the point in taking the lowest position the club was in in 2001 (ninth, with a good percentage) and saying 'but we turned it around from there!' Of course we did. Any successful team can point to their lowest point before they were successful and say the same thing. But there are very few parallels between now and 2001.

I would suggest that that there are more parallels to 1998. Brisbane made the finals in 1996, acquired a bunch of new recruits and got a new jumper at year's end. Then had a disappointing 1997 before finally bottoming out in 98.
