Wow, the goal posts are slideable or they have different holes to slot the posts into?

I'm not sure. I read this about Freo's new facility after I heard about the Aquatic Centre base for the Crows.

The State Government kicked in $10 million, as did the Commonwealth, with the City stumping up $65 million and the AFL and Dockers also contributing.

The tour took in community components including six basketball courts reconfigurable for other sports, aquatic facilities including 25-metre indoor heated pool, 50-metre outdoor pool and water slides.

The club facilities, which will share some common spaces with the public, break new ground.

There is a main training oval with a GPS markings system to configure goal posts and boundary lines to any ground in the AFL.

Freo's new facility has 1 oval, they re line mark and move goal posts via a gps program to suit upcoming opponents grounds.
Not ideal. If you spend 80% of your time training on a field with, say, AO dimensions and then someone paints different lines on the same field, there will be a habitual recourse to playing the field the same way.

It's common practice in many top sporting clubs across a variety of sports around the world to have alternate fields with different dimensions matching important grounds they will have to play on.

I mean you could try to make ends meet with one field but if we want to give ourselves the best chance and best program we should be aiming for 2 fields: AO size and MCG/Perth size.

Since there are already 2 oval footprints and they could both serve the community at different times, it's not an outrageous condition to put forward.

MCG - 171m x 146m
Optus Oval (Perth) - 165m x 130m
Football Park (Adelaide) - 165m x 135m
Adelaide Oval - 167m x 124m

Football Park, our current training ground is closer in size to the MCG than Optus Oval in Perth. I really wonder when people will stop with the delusion that Optus Oval in Perth is the same or similar size as the MCG

Well that's confusing... I mean maybe your dimensions are right, but we've all heard a million times that Optus was built to near MCG specs and that had a big part to play in west coast's flag:

AFL 2018: Adam Simpson glad Optus Stadium dimensions mirror major Melbourne venues

IF WEST Coast coach Adam Simpson had his way when building plans were drawn up, the dimensions of Optus Stadium would’ve mirrored Subiaco Oval’s.

But Simpson is happy to admit his initial thinking was wrong, saying the MCG-like dimensions at the new home ground have given the Eagles a better chance to play their brand.

The Eagles have shocked most AFL pundits this season to sit on top of the ladder after Round 10, winning all but one of their home games.

Yet unlike Subi, the Optus Stadium dimensions (165m x 130m) are almost identical to both major Melbourne venues — Etihad Stadium and MCG (both 160m x 129m) — especially in width.

MCG no. Marvel stadium is 160m x 129m

Yeah FIIK. I just searched and found a whole bunch of different dimensions for the MCG. I think the 171x146 that you quote is probably fence size.

Most, including the AFC website (which agrees with your 167x124 for AO) say the MCG (160x141) is shorter and fatter than AO, which is what I've always thought.

Regardless, to escape getting bogged down in minutiae, the main point is we need an alternate practice ground with the dimensions of the MCG because that's where the magic happens.

Just make the 2 ovals at 90deg so it's not an issue, so the wings of the replica MCG field become the goal squares of the AO replica field, you just have to move the goal posts. When you're matching the MCG you're heading east-west, when you're matching the Adelaide Oval you're heading north - south.

Interesting thing is there looking at WC facilities (and maybe Ess), the size of the building itself appears quite small.

If us using the Aquatic centre didnt require us to incorporate public facilities ala Freo model, the building footprint could be considerably reduced, opening up more room for "parklands" or oval creation.

Also agree that it shouldn't be inconceivable to have both sporting ground areas redeveloped (really just a better surfacing) so there are 2 quality ovals of different size. 1 can be available to the public at any given time and its a massive benefit to the public having that standard of ground

Can someone lay either the AO or MCG image over the oval below the aquatic centre? It appears quite narrow like a soccer pitch and would be interesting to see how a full size oval would fit.

would also be interested to see this.

I think it would fit but would require the building itself to be rebuilt (assuming existing was a knock down) to allow a bit more width to make it comfortable.
Then run an AO along the Eastern part encompassing the 1 other grounds

Yes, there are slight variations in sizes posted. Looking at stadium management sites last year they're close enough though. Point I was trying to make is that Optus Oval is closer in size AO (and Marvel Stadium for that matter) than the MCG.

I used the same 20m range on the bottom corner for both maps though.

If they moved the tennis courts across the road into Park 3, there would be some more room too.

Yeah I'm not sure what you did. Here's the MCG over the bottom oval with correct scale

If you're just basing that on the satellite photos, I think that is from during the development, West Coasts facilities take up most of that space at the bottom of the image.

Just based on this angle I think we could do something that doesn't look too out of place in the Park Lands, rather than a multi-story concrete training bunker like we've got now.

I do think we'd probably have to incorporate some public facility to get something over the line in the Park Lands, I think Ann Moran said on a recent 5AA interview that she thinks the Aquatic Centre has about 18 months life in it before it either has to be knocked down or completely refurbished, so there is probably some sort of funding we can attach ourselves to.

What is the soccer pitch below the aquatic centre currently used for?
