We could keep throwing squillions at health and it wouldn’t ever be enough.

Genuine question to those that know, is there a health system in the world that doesn’t have any issues?

No, but there are better ways to spend the immense amount of money they want to throw at this venue, such as actually building the centre court stadium that Tennis SA had been planning for over a decade, and Basketball SA and Netball SA had recently gotten behind for half the price. Doing that doesn't let them open up the money sacks to developer 'contributions' for the riverbank though, which has always been the entire purpose behind the proposal, from day one, for a government that has claimed too poor to follow through with any public works project and cancelled them outright before this sudden bolt from the blue.

That's the 6,000 seat stadium that could technically host basketball but the 36ers at the time it was announced were getting crowds bigger than that in a shed in the middle of the suburbs without any public transport links beyond the local bus?

Not sure what more you're expecting?

The government has been shelving any project that isn't a road or intersection upgrade (consistent with their ideology) since they took office, under the claim that they were too expensive. This hyper-expensive venue then came from nowhere, neither asked for nor telegraphed, but strangely well supported in public by the Hotel and developer lobbies. Not long after the proposal, the government began attempts to change legislation to allow them to parcel off chunks of the riverbank to developers for hotels, along with supporting hospitality.

Last I checked, they hadn't settled on a capacity, and were flexible within a range depending on what kind of support and funding they could get.

What more am I expecting? Something besides your biased lefty conspiracy theory, maybe some proof

Wouldn’t a stadium of 25000 for basketball and soccer be better and more practical, maybe with a roof. The biggest issue is always money though, not to build but for the clubs to become viable and financially independent. The Reds have got a crap deal that doesn’t allow them to compete with Sydney and Melbourne.

I friend of mine worked for a magazine that did the fringe 3 years ago and they demanded ridiculous money have a show here, didn’t want to compromise at all.
Whatever government gets in, they only think of the coffers. This needs to change or we never will better as a state

Parking at Hindmarsh is a thousand times better than the Parade. Amenities are fine too. There's about a dozen pubs in walking distance to the stadium and some decent restaurants on port road as well if thats what you're after. Its not quite the Parade in that regard but its good enough.
I've told you a hundred million times not to exaggerate.

We should not be considering a combined stadium for soccer and basketball. That’ll be so heavily compromised neither sport will benefit from it.

We actually need to understand how it's being spent.

But that will never happen because the unions won't let Labor do it, and if the Libs tried the populist hacks in the Labor party would make it out to be an attack on public health. So we just keeping spending money

And you know it.

Not really

Soccer, Rugby, American Football can share a stadium. Soccer's problem is that none of the others really exist here, so they're always going solo.

Tennis, Basketball, and Netball can share a stadium, which can also be used for a variety of ring/combat sports without too much issue.

Also, a lot of MLS sides have had to build smaller stadiums because they simply cannot fill a NFL stadium for their matches.

While theoretically you can put a basketball/netball court in a soccer stadium, you’ll end up with seats that are either close with no view, or a view but a mile away from the action. The Australia v USA basketball series at Marvel Stadium an example of this.

Not to mention that basketball/netball simply don’t need a 25,000 seat stadium. Even in the US the largest NBA stadiums hover around the 18-20k mark.

I wouldn’t think so. And now, post Covid I believe it will be even worse due to the PTSD suffered by those on the front lines.

Are you aware that Marvel Stadium was originally built as a dual purpose stadium in partnership with the AFL and Soccer

To that end, the stadium was built with mororized retractable seating to suit a Soccer pitch .....and then be retracted for AFL
When Soccer pulled out, the retractable seating has never been used since day 1 .......it's been needed a few times as you've outlined .....but rumour is the mechanics have long since seized up

Soccer was dreadful at Marvel, the right decision was made to leave.

Would it have been better though if the seats had gone out to the pitch .....it was designed to do that

You've clearly not been paying attention. They've been in plenty of times, as recently as late 2019 in fact. A majority of Melbourne Victory home games at the venue for 5-6 years pre-pandemic had the seats in. Wasn't perfect and still nothing like a proper rectangular stadium, but it was certainly an improvement on the full oval configuration.

Regardless, that setup would still be horrible for smaller arena sports like basketball, netball or tennis. What you would need to do, is something like what is planned for the upgraded Bernabeu. Wall off half the stadium and put temporary seats on the arena to create a more intimate atmosphere. Probably cost an absolute fortune and not sure how well it would work on a grass surface (the Bernabeu will have a retractable turf surface), but that would be the best way to have one single venue to cater for all of soccer, basketball, netball, tennis, concerts and exhibitions.

Are you talking seats on the arena / temporary decking ? .....I'm talking mechanical movement of infrastructure under Marvel, designed not to sit on the surface .....I'm confident that isn't what you're referring too / it's seized up

But I take your point anyway re temporary seating
