Re: New Stadium - Time for Cautious Optimism?

Make the Ore diggers pay for something for once :) I'm sure the combination of Rio/BHP/Woodside and Alcoa could easily stump up the cash for this venture.

Re: New Stadium - Time for Cautious Optimism?

Good stuff, they know how to build them over in the U.S. Should take a trip to Emirates Stadium in London that's how a stadium should be built.

Alcoa barely turns a profit due to the relatively high energy costs in WA compared to their main competitors in Russia and China.

Re: New Stadium - Time for Cautious Optimism?

I've been to 2 of those 3 stadiums (Yankee and Meadowlands), I hope we get something as well designed as those. Would make the MCG or the Dome look rubbish in comparison.

Alas, I am sure we will stinge it and get a crappy stadium in comparison.

I hate how they call it Patersons Stadium in Subiaco, why not just call it Subiaco Stadium?

Meadowlands is very good practically but from a architectural point of view, its quite ugly and doesn't draw the same breath as say the birdsnest or alliance.

Yankee Stadium is amazing.

I don't mind brand spanking new stadiums like Citifield, Emirates, etc having sponsored names as they have no history what-so ever but to rename 100 years of history is silly.

I mean we won't have the MCG or Nou Camp getting new names any time soon.

The irony of in one breath declaring "we need a new stadium and need to get rid of Subiaco" whilst in the next breath declaring "I hate how we hurt tradition at Subiaco"...

I mean we won't have the MCG or Nou Camp getting new names any time soon.

Football doesn't control the MCG like they do Subiaco. If they were to, it would probably have a sponsored name also.

Quite frankly, the tradition at Subiaco Oval meant nothing once Subiaco was moved from there to Leederville Oval after 96 years as it's home ground.

Re: New Stadium - Time for Cautious Optimism?

Col, aka the man with the purse, prefers to go new, not a rebuild:

WA is more likely to get a new stadium instead of an upgrade.
When, in 2009, he shelved plans by the former Labor government to build a new stadium, he believed the state could only afford to redevelop Patersons Stadium at Subiaco. He now thought differently. WA's strengthening economy meant he was now willing to consider building a new stadium at either Subiaco, East Perth or the Burswood. He would assess the stadium issue when he returned from annual leave in a fortnight, but said he would not make an immediate decision.
"But we will not send it off to another committee for 12 months. We will deal with it. We will use all the information that is already there. The (John) Langoulant report is there and is still relevant. We will use that."

The issue is the WAFC must retain control, no room for a MCC style arrangement.

Re: New Stadium - Time for Cautious Optimism?

That is good news for WA!!!

A stadium at Burswood, Kitchener Park or East Perth will begin construction together with the Perth City Link and the waterfront development.

Burswood Stadium would be fantastic. Burswood would almost become the major entertainment precienct of Perth then.

I'll guffaw and chortle at that - particularly the whining from the Subi council.

Personally - if the footprint is big enough - East Perth is the best spot.

I love how Melbourne has a sporting precinct - would be great to mimic,

It would be great if they could sink the railway in East Perth (and potentially demolish the TransWa building). We could then have an open promenade of entertainment that could be used for both the new stadium and the soccer stadium.. It would also have the WACA in close proximity.

That is one of my concerns. How many of the WAFC commissioners have Subi connections??

Burswood would be shit. That place would at least need major additions in parking, roads and other infrastructure. Plus it would cost in excess of $250m extra. Plus now you get to go out in Subi. At Burswood, you get to go to the Casino and its crappy "pubs".

I really dont think you're thinking of the future. Burswood already has a train line right by it, the great east highway as well as the graham farmer freeway as major road infrastructure, is right by the river and an entertainment district. If there is a new stadium there the area will expand and there will be a lot more pubs and other forms of entertainment there.

Lastly for all those interested in property development or investment the minute there is a guarantee on a place for the stadium get right on any good real estate deals in the area as land values will soar.

I am thinking of the future, however from my perspective. Most of the land directly around where the stadium would be is owned by Burswood. There would be limited opportunities for anything to be built not controlled by Packer unless land around it was given up. Unless managed very well it could turn into a very shit place to have a pub. Very busy for a few hours every weekend, but dead the rest of the time. I, for one, will never be heading to the "Burswood entertainment district" if it comes into play. Though, I live in the western suburbs, so that may have just as much to do with it. I do see some other people on here go to Burswood to hang with the bogans, so maybe it could be successful on more than game day.

I should also be pretty honest in saying the other main reason i hope its in burswood as it will be a great opportunity to make a lot of money through real estate.

originally Packer was willing to GIVE the required land to the WAFC if they built the stadium there. As opposed to buying land anywhere else. this would be offset against the additional construction costs, (doubt it was $250 million, reference? ) But yeah, if it was the catalyst to knock down Burswood and rebuild a nice entertainment precent maybe, but I think Burswood is a hole, and I am a Docker bogan.

I swear, the first Gov't to commit to a football stadium gets my vote. they are clueless atm.

I dont think Subi is the answer. it is horrible getting in and out with 40k people add another 20 - 30 thousand, and the place will just be a joke. Burswood has the best infrastructure, but worst atmosphere.

Re: New Stadium - Time for Cautious Optimism?

Its at least $250 mill extra for Burswood, probably a lot more and will be hard to give construction timelines, there will be complications at most stages. East Perth and Kitchener are far better options.

http://www.watoday.com.au/wa-news/burswood-firming-up-as-perth-stadium-site-20100905-14vt7.html

Mr Travers said the stadium task force estimated that building at Burwood would add at least $300 million to the total cost of the stadium, bringing it up to more than $1.1 billion.

Re: New Stadium - Time for Cautious Optimism?

IMO opinion, Burswood is worth serious consideration. I remember shortly before last years fed election, Gillard was selling a Great Eastern Highway major redevelopment, entrance to Perth type scenario where they/she has committed big bucks. It would make sense to consider the new stadium as part of the overall development. On the other side of the coin, Kitchener would be the most inappropriate IMO.
