The proposal suggests a revamped first-round involving a lightning premiership-style format, with Team GWS appearing as the 18th team, boosted by top-up players from the Sydney/ACT state league.

There would be six divisions in the competition, each with three teams. The round-robin opener would see each team play two matches comprised of two 20-minute halves.

I like it. Kind of like a T20 form of footy. 4 x 20min quarters -> 2games x 2 x 20min halves. Has merit.

Will all 3 group games be in the same night ? If they are wont there be a huge advantage for the team playing 1st and 3rd seeing as they will be fresh in the last game.

It says only 10 minutes between each match.
In the night timeslot example given by McLachlan the first match would kick off at 7.40 with the next starting at 8.35 and the last to begin at 9.30.
Also this...
The pool winners, as well as two lucky losers, would then progress to the second week of the competition, which would revert to the more traditional format seen in recent years.
I guess percentage in a "cup" format now means something.

I don't think you play more than once per night.

There are 6 teams per pool, 3 games played all in one night. So i think each team plays once.

Regardless, it's a 20 minute half and you can rollover your squad between games.

I don't mind it to be honest - because it's a good way to ease the guys into a full game. No point thrashing them so early on.

[joke] How about leave the Auskick goals up across the middle of the ground, play 4 teams at once with 2 balls in play. Rotate clockwise every quarter![/joke]

Seriously though, I'm interested to see how this new format will play out. It would be a different experience to go to AAMI and watch the Crows play 2 opponents and have those opponents play each other.

The team in games 1 and 3 does have quite an advantage though.

Actually, it's 3 teams per pool, 6 pools. I don't think the hour break for whichever team plays first and last would be that significant a deal. Just give it to whichever team has to travel to the event (in the case of syd, bri, ade, & per) and in the case of melbourne just give it to whoever sucked the worst in the previous year.

The AFL are looking more stupid every day.

teams need a proper game not some kids comp

in 2014 there will be 4 too many teams in the AFL

Game 1 - A vs B - No advantage to either side

Game 2 - Winner G1 vs C - Possible advantage to C as they will be fresh

Game 3 - C vs loser G1 - Could go either way. C could be tired after game 2 and loser of G1 could be starting to build up latic acid.

I don't like the sound of it. If they want to retain the same structure for the second week then why don't they play 9 matches in the first week and 1 "unlucky winner" (ie. the team that won by the least) can be left out of the following week.

Thanks - completely misread it!

I reckon the best way to do this fairly is to have the groups carry over for 3 years with each side in the group getting to host the other 2. i.e.

The host team would get the majority of the fans (especially for non vic teams) so it makes sense that they play the first and last games of the night (otherwise you might get some supporters leave early if the neutral game is last or arrive after the first game if their team only plays games 2 and 3).

Year 1
West Coast host Adelaide and Sydney at Subiaco

Game 1 - WC v Adel
Game 2 - Adel v Sydney
Game 3 - WC v Sydney

Year 2
Adelaide host Sydney and West Coast at AAMI

Game 1 - Adel v Sydney
Game 2 - Sydney v WC
Game 3 - Adel v WC

Year 3
Sydney host West Coast and Adelaide at the SCG

Game 1 - Sydney v WC
Game 2 - WC v Adel
Game 3 - Sydney v Adel

That way each team gets 2 game 1's, 2 game 2's and 2 game 3's over the 3 year period.

To ensure you get the best match ups, at the end of the 3 year cycle you'd do up a ladder that encompasses the previous 3 years of regular season. 1-3 would be group 1, 4-6 would be group 2 and so on. This would help make sure that each group is full of teams of similar ability which means better games.
