Purely out of curiosity I Googled the home stadium for the Chargers and Rams.
Not that far east of LAX I see, but a little north so not to be directly under the flight path. And far enough west not to be in South Central.
So a fairly uninspiring location, like most of LA.
Relatively easy to get to: 405 and 105 being close.
So that’s not a reason.
George I think you will find both the Chargers and Rams will struggle for attendance. Both Raiders and Rams have played out of LA, one of them was Anaheim based at one stage. I think the other was at the Coliseum? Twenty odd years ago it was difficult to pull crowds, I reckon that won’t have changed. Even the Dodgers struggle. And they’ve been there forever and share the entire metropolis with only one other team (Angels at Anaheim).
I can only speak from my own experience, but football is just not a LA thing.
Baseball maybe, basketball definitely is.
And given how big LA is, and how many people are from different parts of the country, you will often see a big attendance for opposition fans there.
Maybe there is just not the local ownership with the fans, which is also the opposite from my personal experience in other cities.
LA is very odd, having two relocated teams playing out of the same stadium is even weirder. Well, just really really weird.

This has to be one of the best opening slate of games in recent memory.
I was just telling my mate it's probably the best opening two weeks in NFL history

I don't think that's true, if football wasn't an LA thing why did they move there?

The Raiders & Rams had a presence in LA before so the move wasn't so shocking but the Chargers are a different kettle of fish. I think it's a number of factors. One is obviously the relocation (especially to diehard Oakland fans who also saw the Golden State Warriors move out of the city too - a big blow to a struggling class of people). Two is the performance of the team, the Chargers haven't been good for a little while now and the Raiders gutted their list in the first year Gruden took over who was previously in the booth commentating games. They traded away a contender for DPOY in Khalil Mack and they seemed to have no direction. I'm not sure they have changed. Rams moving from St.Louis was the only winner I think, they became immediately good but have stagnated now.

LA and NY both have two teams playing out of the same stadium, I get it given they are probably the two biggest cities in America but anyway.

Imagine a flat suburb of the same dispersed population density that is about 100 miles long and relatively easy to navigate around and through.
Imagine the suburb is about 18 million people or more in size.
That’s LA.

Think of that potential market.
That’s why NFL teams move there.

But if the market has so much potential, then why did both the Raiders and the Rams leave?

Oakland is a pissant size in comparison. Plus you’ve got the Niner’s across the Bay. Vegas is small too. St. Louis is probably the bigger of the three. Why leave LA to go to these much much smaller towns?

NFL franchises have one reason (by and large, probably Packers excepted) for existence, and that is profit.

So the answer to those questions is pretty simple: they could make more profit if they left LA than if they stayed. Which is amazing given the television rights and only leaving three teams in the Pacific Coast time zone. (There’s 13+ in the east coast time zone). ***

That’s my answer to you. The question is not so much why they moved there but why they didn’t stay.
Then to have the Rams return, after 20 years, but play out of a different stadium? What is the story with that? It’s like leaving Waverley to play in Sydney then returning twenty years later to reconnect with your fans but you play out of Kardinia Park. Huh?

As for the Chargers moving up from San Diego, I am staggered by that. Fifty five years of history with that city, years of support and patronage, blown up in an instant for the fool’s gold that is LA. And ironic given that they were created as the LA Chargers by the Hilton family back in the 60’s.

Now wrt the stadium….

Say it takes at least two hours (probably closer to three now) on a freeway to go from one end of LA to the other.
Does it make sense to put two teams (of anything) in one corner of it?
If you want to capture as much business as possible in this new market I mean. It didn’t make sense in the 80’s and it doesn’t make sense now.

I told you LA was odd.

*** FYI: winter weekends in the States is defined by the tv coverage of football. College on Saturday, pro on Sunday (mostly). The games are rolled out across the nation in time zones. So it is quite normal for 12 hours of football coverage commencing late morning and ending late evening on the east coast. Four games. East coast time, mid west, mountain time, Pacific coast time. No wonder male football supporters over there have beer guts and wide arses.

LA is an NBA city.
Why go watch a football game when your team is 1/32 ?
They bought the basketball team from Minnesota and ever since they been buying all the best players in the land and are a constant powerhouse.

NFL teams left because no one cared.
League pushing them back in because they crave a slice of the 2nd biggest market in USA.

like the AFL trying to get in on rugby territory (soccer in gws case)

Just on Mack, I wouldn’t say the raiders traded him away. He forced their hand.

Waiting on tomorrow's result before making a call on that one. :p
You should take care of Detroit without any worries. Lambeau will implode if you don't lol

Love the fact that both Washington & New York (Giants) lost, just need to do the job against Dallas tomorrow. But you're right, so many highlights. This season is incredible!

*After* it bounced off the upright! was an amazing effort. Watching the Rams/Bucs game to see if Brady can do it again...tipping he will.
